Astralis, sYnck pass first IEM Dallas open qualifier

Teams like Ninjas in Pyjamas, BIG, Movistar Riders, and Sprout will have to try again next week.

Astralis and sYnck have come out victorious from the first IEM Dallas open qualifier to earn berths in the closed stage, where two spots at the main event will be on offer.

The two teams will join invited sides fnatic, Cloud9, OG, and Spirit in the closed qualifier, which will take place on March 31-April 3. Two more teams will come from the second open qualifier, scheduled to run on March 27-28.

Astralis, who were competing for the first time following their disappointing exit in 17-20th place at ESL Pro League Season 17, breezed through the qualifier, most notably beating 1win and HEET in comfortable affairs on the way.

Astralis will play for a spot in Dallas in a week's time

The surprise of the tournament, Estonian squad sYnck, had a grueling route by contrast and fought tooth and nail from beginning to end. Four out of their first five matches went to at least 29 rounds as they passed teams like Websterz and Copenhagen Flames, before they beat 9 Pandas to the closed qualifier spot.

Fueled by their best result yet following their signing with sYnck in January, the team around Kristjan "fejtZ" Allsaar will enter the closed stage as massive underdogs to fight among five teams who currently reside in the top 15.

Among the biggest names who failed the first qualifier were Ninjas in Pyjamas, who faltered at the hands of 9 Pandas in the penultimate round. BIG also have to try again after losing a 30-round match to HEET.

Previously unable to qualify for IEM Melbourne and the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown, Sprout are still yet to find much success with their newest in-game leader Aaron "AZR" Ward and will hope to turn their fortunes in the second qualifier after being eliminated by Iron Branch in the first.

but it may be in the future, nip and eyeballers are trash, godsent nowhere to be seen, nip academy is alright but lacks more experience, fnatic only has krimz all in all, i think estonia is coming strong, this new team, ropz on faze, supra a good talent

but the more you are successful, the more people will watch and play cs for example, i have never heard of any of those players that qualified, and they might be playing because they were watching ropz on fpl in 2015-16 and when he joined mouz in 2017

Estonian CS goes back a very long time. I started playing in around 2000 and started following the pro scene in around 2001-2. Back in the day, my favourite teams were MIBR and mouz. The Estonians in Synck had a good run, the organisation goes back two+ decades but back in the day they had a good run. The biggest statement was in SHGopen 2006: liquipedia.net/counterstrike/ShgOpen_200.. Took out MIBR (with Mr Fallen, on it) to begin with and then mtw.de, SoA, etc, before falling to fnatic, which was the no.1 team at the time and ended up winning the whole tourney. The guys playing under the tag now are solid tier 2 right now, but the Synck tag goes back decades. Dodz was arguably a top 10 player at the time, but the concept of international teams did not exist at the time.

WCG 2007 was ok also. Lost to A-Gaming 1:2 and finished 9-16 if i remember correctly. Indeed Dodz was an absolute animal at that time.

On a positive side , Astralis made a very swift and comfortable work of the Tier 2 opponents this time around compares to how they were doing previously. Maybe they can excel in the closed qualifier too !

Yes If the brackets aren't fuckall and Astralis doesn't play C9 in the same side of the bracket Astralis can make it to Dallas

Actually I fucked up It's a double elimination bracket i thought they're following the same format as the open qualifier If Astralis does play C9 they still have a 2nd chance...unless C9 bottle it and play Astralis twice somehow.... unlikely though But favourites are really C9 and Astralis

looking at the teams, Astralis should actually be able to take them all down albeit C9 and DE makes it less forgiving so if they do face C9 , they probably wont face them again till the finals and by then ,it may not even matter because top 2 teams progress!

both teams in shambles. BiG will be out of top 30 at the end of Paris Major, NiP at least have some money to fix problems. BiG will have to go international or stay in irrelevance.
