The new iteration of Spirit have emerged victorious from their first LAN outing.
Spirit have secured the PARI Dunav Party trophy and $30,000 thanks to a 2-1 upset victory over pre-tournament favorites Virtus.pro, taking Vertigo (16-10) and Mirage (22-19) either side of a loss on Overpass (8-16).
Spirit have the superlative Danil "donk" Kryshkovets to thank for their run to the trophy, the 16-year-old prodigy was at his effervescent best for the majority of the matches they played, racking up a 1.37 rating, 1.56 impact rating, and over 100 ADR across 10 maps. The youngster did struggle for portions of the final and was not quite as effective, but regardless the future looks bright for donk after this impressive LAN performance.
Virtus.pro’s journey to the final was powered by an in-form Dzhami "Jame" Ali, the captain and AWPer producing a 1.29 rating across the tournament. Their run at this tournament, combined with their win over FaZe at Gamers8 and their CCT Online Finals victory, suggest Virtus.pro are on the right path to getting back to their best.
The two grand finalists had already faced off twice in recent times, trading series in the CCT Online Finals earlier in the month. Virtus.pro won the more important of the two, the grand final, and also came out of the tournament with a 3-2 map record against Spirit, thus they carried a mental edge into this matchup.
Spirit took their map choice of Vertigo with relative ease. First they posted a dominant 11-round CT half thanks to the combined efforts of Myroslav "zont1x" Plakhotia and donk, who each racked up over 120 ADR. They took a little bit longer to get going on their T half, allowing Virtus.pro to bring the score back to 10-12, but eventually picked up four rounds on the bounce to close out the map 16-12.
Virtus.pro returned the favor on their own map selection, Overpass. The Jame-led side raced to a convincing lead on their T side, with Nikolay "mir" Bityukov leading the way, only for Spirit to reign them in as the half wore on. When the sides switched it was entirely one-way traffic, with Virtus.pro denying their opponents a single round as they romped to a 16-8 score.
The decider of Mirage began much as Overpass had, with Virtus.pro running out to an early lead on T side, only for Spirit to grind their way back into contention. Spirit fared far better in the second half this time around, and seemed they were well on their way to steadily grinding out a victory. Virtus.pro had enough in the tank, however, to grab three of the last four rounds, sending the map to overtime.
The two squads continued to be evenly matched in OT, so much so that a second set of overtime rounds were required to separate them, but Spirit eventually triumphed 22-19.
