Vitality top Group A over Movistar Riders

Vitality have claimed the top spot in Group A at ESL Pro League Season 18 following their 2-0 victory over Movistar Riders. The international mix will start their playoff journey in the quarter-finals after cruising through the competition's first week with sweeps against ORKS, Ninjas in Pyjamas, and the Jinetes.

The world's No. 1 team came to Malta with very little practice according to Dan "⁠apEX⁠" Madesclaire and company, but have not skipped a beat so far in their campaign. Vitality now have 25 days before their next match to prepare as they take aim at their fourth LAN trophy of the year.

Movistar Riders turned out to be the surprise package from Group A after victories over FURIA and GamerLegion, which earned the team a spot in the playoffs. The Spanish squad showed a much better side on LAN after a poor online run over the last month.

Vitality cruise to EPL playoffs with victory over Ninjas in Pyjamas

Vitality started off the series on the Spaniards' pick of Overpass with momentum on their side, claiming the pistol round and the next four victories to go 5-0 up early. Mathieu "⁠ZywOo⁠" Herbaut and company never looked back, and despite a few threatening rounds from Movistar Riders, the European mix never lost the lead.

Emil "⁠Magisk⁠" Reif performed admirably in the first map, finding six opening frags to give Vitality the early round advantage. The Dane's contributions went beyond entries as he accumulated 24-13 K-D and a 1.60 rating thanks to his consistent fragging output.

Inferno turned out to be a map to forget for Movistar Riders, who failed to convert the first anti-eco round and allowed Vitality to dominate early. apEX had a fantastic T half, and was joined by ZywOo after halftime to break the Spaniards and push their team to a 16-7 victory. bladE's men showed a few signs of life after moving to the defense with four late rounds, but failed to frighten Vitality.

The playoffs seeding system in EPL is a little peculiar. Astralis who beat FURIA, GamerLegion and ORKS qualify for round 1 while Movistar who beat just FURIA and GamerLegion qualify for round 2.

Pretty normal as they played from the Upper Bracket, that’s the boon if you first win 2 games and then lose one against the best team, vs winning and losing or straight losing 2 matches and so being downgraded to the lesser brackets. More peculiar is that Furia is forced to play two matches today despite coming from the lower finals vs for example NiP who got the same treatment but just coming from the lower semi finals, but gamers can play 8 hours a day so doing 2 matches on one day with a wide gap in time between them isn’t a big thing.

That's not what I was talking about. It makes sense that they qualified after the first two games, it's just the seeding part that's odd. Take Cologne for instance. Heroic won their first two group stage games, then lost to ENCE in the upper final. That meant ENCE went straight to the semis while Heroic had to play the quarters.

It's kinda unfair that rides take the second place in the group and automatically advance one stage further in the playoffs. Because Astralis too lost just one game in the whole group. Why the fuck they have to play an extra playoff stage just to match Movistar? This system worked fine in Cologne where 2nd and 3rd placed teams went to the same stage of quarters, but not here where you have this weird ass qualification system.
