Five rounds from IEM Sydney day 1 that wouldn't have happened in CS:GO

The first day of IEM Sydney gave us a sneak peek at how the new mechanics in Counter-Strike 2 can be used at the highest level.

FaZe showcased the impact of new CS2 features on a couple of occasions

Counter-Strike 2 brought with it new mechanics and changes to existing features. From new volumetric smokes and the ability to temporarily make them vanish with an HE grenade to the increased bomb radius, these were sure to throw the CS:GO meta out of the window.

On the opening day of the first big LAN in the new game, IEM Sydney, the first signs of what that meta shift could look like began to show already.

Complexity blow up the smoke to get the final round

In their opening match against Monte, Complexity made simple but excellent use of the smoke-vanishing mechanic to win the game.

In CS:GO you'd probably see teams pop-flash through the smoke or wait it out, but Complexity decided to pop-nade it (Can we as a community come up with a better term for it that isn't 'donking', please?) instead for a surprise effect.

FaZe use the new bomb radius for a (sort of) ninja defuse

Whichever side you're on, you have to be more careful dealing with the bomb explosion because it has a larger effect on most of the maps in the pool in Counter-Strike 2. That change is the most pronounced on Nuke, and GamerLegion felt the pain when they decided to vacate the bombsite a little too early in their match against FaZe.

Two in one

In the playoffs-qualifying match between MOUZ and Natus Vincere, in one round both teams used a grenade to blow up the smoke with solid success.

Who liked smoke defuses, anyway?

It was previously somewhat rare for players to keep HE grenades late enough into a round to be used on a defusing player, but maybe that will change in Counter-Strike 2.

Frederik "acoR" Gyldstrand showed just why it can be a good idea in GamerLegion's match against BetBoom, in which he denied a smoke defuse to win a 1v2 and keep his team alive in the map.

FaZe's kickstart the comeback vs. Vitality with a nade combo

Finding themselves in the elimination zone after BO1 upsets in the opening round, FaZe and Vitality battled in Group A's lower bracket at the end of day one.

It was all going the world's No. 1 team's way until they were leading 8-1 on the deciding Nuke, when FaZe finally found a way to break through Vitality's defenses and kickstarted the comeback.

I thought they will talk about the peeker advantage. It is funny most the awpers are near bottom fragging. It wont happen in csgo.

This just shows how CS2 has dropped the skill ceiling massively. How anyone can think that is a better competitive game than CSGO is beyond me.

See, this is a common misconception, and to think that this is acceptable in a competitive environment is ridiculous. The professional scene is very busy, and certain teams have had to play CSGO in previous tournaments less than a few weeks ago. So obviously they were not practicing CS2, I mean why would they when they had a chance to win money in CSGO? Everybody claims that Counter-Strike is the most competitive FPS out there right? Yet we expect our professional teams to show their best and have enough time to practice a NEW game? The fact that many pro players are speaking out against the problems with CS2 shows that the way things are being done is wrong. IEM Sydney should have been played on CSGO, trying to throw big money events onto a new game that hardly any of the professional teams have had a decent chance to practice is absolutely an amateur way of doing things. Anyone who thinks otherwise really doesn't understand how competitive sports are done.

You are telling it drops the skill ceiling in an article which demonstrates new mechanics - can you elaborate a bit? How does it drop the skill ceiling when you cant trust your smoke as much as you did in the previous game? In my opinion that raises the skill ceiling, as you need to be more aware of the options your enemy has. None of the situations above in the article lowers the skill ceiling. Instead in every situation the skill ceiling is actually higher, as there are more options. Also, you are telling that its a common misconception that there should be prize for people who adapts faster in competitive sports - what? In extremely competitive environment the adaptation to new mechanics and adaptation to what your opponent is doing or might be capable of doing is one of the key elements. You are not seriously telling, that the need to adapt lowers the skill ceiling?

Okay, name me one other sport in the WORLD that has changed the entire mechanics of how the game is played, then asked a professional team to compete in it within a few weeks of playing the old way of doing things. It's never once BEEN done, when CSGO was released, professional teams had MONTHS and MONTHS to practice the game before any big tournaments happened. So again I ask, why do we think it's acceptable to think big-money tournaments are "viable" after only a few weeks of practice?

I replied to thread where u told that skill ceiling is lower in cs2 based on the article. Could you elaborate that view? How are the entire mechanics changed? Peekers advantage was there before, flashes work just like in csgo, map layout are the same, roundtime, bombtime, same. Weapon mechanics pretty much same. Dota2 has had major changes, even additional heroes, which have brought completly new mechanics, and teams have competed with the changes in a shorter preparation time than teams now had when it was announced that this event is played in cs2. There you go. What do you mean by "viable"? In my opinion its 100% viable, so people actually gets to see how the new game facilitates professional tournament play, and people involved will also get that knowledge. Please elaborate your view that cs2 lowers the skill ceiling. As the article shows clearly it raises it.

Yeah. Its interesting. I have seen alot of people claiming that the skill ceiling is lower in cs2, but when asked about specifics, no one of these people wont answer. Interesting.

The same people who claimed they wanted 1.6 shooting mechanics back with more emphasis on onetaps and first bullet accuracy and less on spraying now complain that onetapping is too strong and spraying too weak. You cannot make it right for some people, period. Yeah the game has issues but that was expected. Imo having a pro tournament is the best way to get proper feedback and fix the issues. If teams dont like it, they are free to not attend (s1mple lol). And yeah, I also feel that the skill ceiling is higher now with new mechanics. It's different and you have to adapt or become irrelevant. It's the same game and chance for everybody after all. It's fresh wind for the CS franchise and we will see some newcomer teams rise and some OG teams crumble. The world is turning and that's a good thing. Peace

if CS ever had a tournament like Dota2 had earlier this year where they introduced the new patch with drastic changes right before a *major*, the fan and player base would self-combust

Soccer (back pass rule), NHL (trapozoid), basket (three point line), tennis (Hawkeye, synthetic strings), rugby (VAR), Overwatch, every Dota patch, FGCs, the list goes on. Stop crying.

People in general are reluctant to change, that applies to pro players too. So it's understandable that some people are bashing the new game. They'll get used to it, or they will go do something else. That's just what it is. Also, CS:GO was so much worse at its first release.

CS2 has skills ; CS:GO is just pure garbage consisted of same smokes, robotic aim, run & shoot etc. im glad CS:GO is over, so pug bots like you will be eliminated from scene forever ; on amateur or proffesional level whatever

I didn't get too deep into the CS2 yet but I dont want to believe that the only change, at least the most visible one, is the new interaction between the smoke and a nade. It is a "new" game. Let's speak about the new awpers and why they are killing less, the recoil, the new economy for being mr12... I dont know, but not only about the nades
