KSCERATO on Liquid: "They invited me, but for now the best was to stay with FURIA"

Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato spoke to HLTV ahead of FURIA's campaign at the PARI Please tournament taking place in Belgrade.

Ever since FURIA brought Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo into the team, the Brazilians have been hard at work trying to merge the veteran's vision with their own.

That work has yet to come to fruition, however, as FURIA have been hovering around 15th-20th place in the rankings for some time, struggling to find success beyond a top-four finish at the recently concluded Roobet Cup.

In an interview conducted on the media day ahead of their next campaign at PARI Please, an eight-team $100,000 tournament taking place in Belgrade, Serbia, KSCERATO spoke to HLTV about the ongoing work with FalleN.

The FURIA star also addressed reports that said he turned down Liquid amidst the North American team's plans of an overhaul of the lineup, and he discussed his views on Counter-Strike 2.

This event, PARI Please 2023, came a little bit out of nowhere but has $100,000 prize pool and a competitive set of teams. How do you approach a tournament like this?

Actually, it's nice to play tournament here because I like Serbia. I watched the tournament before by PARI. They did the last one a few months ago and I like to like how they do it, it's nice. I’m preparing to win this tournament. It will be hard, but not impossible.

You have been living and playing mostly from Europe for some time now. How has it been going for you so far?

It’s tiring. I’m tired, man. A lot of planes. I have a dirty passport because it has no pages anymore. A lot of visas and stuff like that. But it's nice. It's what I choose for my life. I'm glad because that I chose a thing I love, so I do it for love and passion (laughs).

In the last interview with HLTV, FalleN has been talking about merging his and FURIA’s playstyle. Have you been able to mold it together yet?

Yeah, we are practicing really well, FalleN is doing FalleN stuff. That's nice because I think his one of the best IGLs of all time. guerri and FalleN are talking a lot with arT to have both aggressive style and FalleN’s style. I'm happy with the team. FalleN is good and arT is a good co-caller, and everyone is playing really well. In CS2 we have played two tournaments online already, but this one will be offline. It will be good.

FalleN on adjusting to FURIA: "There is a cultural difference in how to approach Counter-Strike"

Playing under the FalleN’s leadership, how does it compare to your expectations?

I have played CS for 15 years already, and I have always been watching him and seeing his vlogs. I always imagined that he was a good guy. But he's more than respected. He is a good leader, has a good mindset, he knows what to talk about and how to talk about it. He is a different person and he's very special in what he does.

FalleN is working with guerri and arT as the team continues to try to merge their styles

FURIA, though, is currently at a level that is clearly below the team’s ambition. Some might find the reason in the lower performance of chelo whose rating dropped to 0.96 with FURIA compared to 1.11 with Imperial. Would you attribute it to the role setup, or is chelo indeed yet to find his game?

I think chelo had a lot of impact in Imperial because he played a lot of positions that [allow more impact]. In FURIA, he plays solo sometimes in some sites and I think this is a new thing for him. It's hard to play solo. But we are managing that, he's getting better and better, and I think the end of this year is going to be nice for him.

How do you feel about CS2? What do you find the most challenging about the new game?

Oh, man, a lot of things, to be honest! I don't play with the cl_bob, cl_drawtracer, and the blood... I mean, I’m color-blind. So sometimes blood confuses me. But it's nice. It's a good game. I played 1.6, CS:GO, CrossFire, and a lot of games, and CS2 is nice. It’s good to have a reset in the mind and how you think about the game. I think it's nice and it will be the best CS.

Recently, there were reports that you were considering a move to Liquid but ultimately turned down this option. Can you tell us more about what happened?

Yeah, they invited me to play for them. But for now, I have a lot of things in mind, I had a lot of tough times this year. So I think for now I want to stay in FURIA because I love my team, I love the organization, and I love the people behind the organization. And I think for now, for me, the best was to stay with FURIA.

Media: KSCERATO turned down Liquid

How important for you to play in a Brazilian team?

It’s good, but I don’t know what to say because it is way better to play in a Brazilian team because Portuguese is my native language. But I don’t think it’s a problem in CS to play in English. For me, there is no problem with playing in Brazil or somewhere else. The Brazilians will always cheer for me and support me no matter where I am.

Could you someday imagine yourself in an international team, especially after these talks with Liquid?

I don't know, man. I don't know about tomorrow. I’m just thinking that for now, I'm happy here. Maybe someday, but I'm not sure about that. I'm still young, I’m 24, so I have a long career ahead. So it seems a bit early to think about that because if you think about that, you’re not focusing on the present. So for now... I think maybe (laughs).

After this event, you will play two LANs in a row: Elisa Masters Espoo 2023 and BetBoom Dacha 2023. Do you have some particular goals set for these events?

Always winning the tournament. It’s always good. We won the last Elisa so it'll be nice to... The weather there is bad, right? Oh, I remember! The expectation is to win the tournament and then bring some stuff to the RMR in January.

furia contracts suck for buyouts and if liquid is getting cadian and twistzz they would be a solid team with him there. he would also prove that he can succeed in an international roster which would definitely make him more attractive as a pick up for other teams. it's such a massive L for hid career that he turned this opportunity down to stick with a shitty BR roster that went through 15 iterations and never accomplished anything relevant internationally

Just throwing a bunch or tier 1 players dont make a tier 1 team, we saw hundreds of projects like that before and teams like faze and mouz are the exception rather than the rule. However, he cant really go worse than furia, no BR team can challenge them, and the only one who did, lost 2 important players to furia. Kscersto is just playing safe here

"we saw hundreds of projects like that before" with a top 3 IGL from the past couple years, and a top 5 rifler if Kscerato had some balls? Four months into this roster and like was mentioned earlier in this thread they've only been sinking. They still have Art for some godforsaken reason, Kscerato's insane form from the last years won't stay forever, guys like NiKo are the exception. His ratings have already fallen off a cliff since FalleN joined. He's been for years in Furia now and has never won anything. Turning down this Liquid opportunity, and not taking a chance with an org that actually wants to win, knows what it takes to do so, can play in EU and has money to spend, was an objectively wrong move (from competetive stand point).

...so because Faze with a washed up coldzera didn't win anything, that means kscerato should just rot in furia and do absolutely nothing with his career. Got it. What point are you even trying to make? I was refuting the "hundreds of projects" that never happened. No one here can name even 10 projects like the Liquid one. It's pure cope.

Liquid has NOTHING yet. And he might be holding out to be a 5th place pickup on an established roster which I think is valid for joining a foreign team from your home country. Now, if he was given a chance to lets say replace twistzz on faze or take magisks spot on vitality or something along those lines and he turned it down I would call him a fool. But I totally get not wanting to join first, cuz look at Magisk, it could be a year before they have an established team, it might never be a super team and honestly even if they increased his salary by 10k/month that doesn't make up for what he might wind up missing out on.

CadiaN is WAY better than FalleN YEKINDAR is WAY better than arT Twistzz is better than yuurih NAF is WAY better than Chelo The Liquid roster is also notably younger than FURIA. Not saying they would win anything, but to pretend like they are similar situations is just ridiculous.

Twistzz is a possibility Cadian is a possibility The scenario we see now is that liquid doesnt even know what they are. FURIA has the longest standing core in the top 30, they are stable, and kscerato said in the interview he is already tired enough with the way things are. Now, imagine putting him in a team full of guys he never played with, in another language, and far from any friend he has. Truth is that liquid, with all their spending, couldnt create a solid team. Liquid and furia were always on the same level or close, and to imagine things are going to be different out of nowhere is just a bit too much imo.

They are likelihoods. NiP has signed alex, Falcons is poised to sign Snappi, ENCE is targeting Gla1ve, and Heroic is where he is leaving. Twistzz is a little more up in the air, but they could slot in oSee as the 5th, and he'd still be better than Chelo has been. The reality is, Liquid for all their mistakes, constantly tries to improve, and have a history of signing big time talents. FURIA has stagnated, chose money over winning this last offseason, and has only been declining for many years at this point. Their average age is 27. This Liquid lineup would have one of the best IGLs in the world, one of the best entry fraggers, and one of the best lurkers, and the last two players would be Twistzz and NAF. Also, Liquid were the best team in the world at one point, FURIA has never been.

>They are likelihoods Big if to be so judgmental, dont you think? Even considering that not so long ago Liquid's management couldn't get the players to stay in the EU to practice because some players wanted to stay in the US. >Twistzz is a little more up in the air I could speculate that Faze's 5-man roster found a way to stay together. Or am I out of touch? >Liquid for all their mistakes, constantly tries to improve That's true. Even if bringing Shox (no disrespect to the legend, but it didn't work out that well) and Fallen (which, with Liquid's mismanagement, also couldn't accomplish a solid IGL figurehead with Stewie and Fallen's seemingly constantly changing IGL status). >FURIA has stagnated They have been with their 3 man core for a while now. +chelo +fallen is the first simultaneous 2 player change they made. >Has only been declining for many years at this point. True. >oSee as the 5th, and he'd still be better than Chelo has been Do you actually believe that? Chelo has been in bad shape, but he's been put in the worst positions in the CT side. How come he outperformed osee's stats in 2022 (back when he had better roles), and considering that CSGO's awp was much more impactful? hltv.org/stats/players/compare/10566/che..

1) I agree people are being too judgemental of KSCERATO, my point regarding this was #70 acting like the Liquid roster would be just as bad, when it would be a clear upgrade. 2) This is why I said Twistzz was more up in the air. 3) We agree n/a lol 4) The FURIA core is approaching 6 years together, that's FOREVER to have accomplished essentially nothing. And I don't mean that as an indictment of the players, a team can be filled with good, motivated players, and just not work, look at G2, or the Grim Liquid. 5) We agree again 6) I think oSee is arguably a better rifler than he is an awper, and he's been quite restricted under the traditional Liquid system. Chelo benefitted a LOT in 2022 from playing the best positions, including occasionally awping, and playing very weak competition most of the time.

1 & 2. My point is that this Liquid (post-2019, not the best or second best team in the world Liquid) is not that much of a better career choice for KS as many of Americans are considering it to be. How can you say it's a clear upgrade when, as you said, we're operating under a somewhat large hypothesis of who is composing the new roster AND the two examples of poor management decisions I wrote earlier? You can even add Yekindar's IGL stint to the list (again, nothing wrong with him, but that choice didn't work out that well either). 3 & 5) I only wrote what we agree on so that so that you don't supose I consider him staying in Furia to be a much better career choice than changing to Liquid in any sense. 4) Yes, Furia only won at most irrelevant online events in their entire history. But Kscerato made the right call not going internacional. It may work for eastern Europeans who are not good with English, but the the chemistry and the trust in his fellow countryman are hard to find in a professional and purely work motivated environment. Brazilian teams are professional aswell, but they also let themselves to me more personal and caring, 99% of Brazilians work better in that environment. 5) I can't say too much about oSee's performance as it would be unfair since I don't watch that many of his games but he's been improving, his 2023 had better stats. Chelo was the entry in some situations, and had better stats than a awper. You can only expect the player with the most important gun to be the one with the most impact, even considering in a higher level of play. >including occasionally awping If you were to count that, let's count that Chelo didn't have EG to play in blast's showdows and other tournaments every now and than.

Furia is a newcomer to cs compared to liquid. I agree, furia has stagnated, both chelo and fallen arent on the level required. There was no need for another igl, you either kicked art and signed fallen or just left art and tried other players. Also dont think saffee had to leave, he is by far the best brazilian awper, and everyone knows how difficult it is to awp in furia. The thing is that those international rosters are a mess. Sure, twistzz and yekindar have experience in international rosters, but cadian doesnt, naf doesnt and kscerato certainly doesnt. Its a much different dynamic, and one that only eu teams can grow accustumed to. As you said, liquid is always trying to take action to improve the team, and It is clear liquid and furia have very different philosophys: liquid wants their goals to be achieved, and if it doesnt look like thats going to happen, they scrape the project and start again; whilst furia is way more leanient (too much imo) and only scrape a project after its been well proven that it isnt going nowhere.

Got to respect his reasoning for turning down the Liquid offer. Hope once this year settles he can find a team that will bring him the success his skill deserves, maybe at an improved Furia, Liquid or another team.

Honestly man has a total lack of ambition and rather just stay where he’s comfortable. That’s his decision but he’s just going to end up like Tabasen.

Yes, why should I left my comfort zone earning a lot of money and no pressure to go to a team that I am in the same position of the other players and have to win tournaments?

Thread is full with coping brazillians. "Playing with friends" winning absolutely nothing, ruining his prime. A top5 rifler the past years and it's wasted with 0 wins. Such a bad decision.
