lurppis: "This was the ESL's fault"

Evil Geniuses captain Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen has shaken off criticism for not agreeing on a round restart during the match against fnatic.

The Finnish star won a 1-on-3 situation during the second half after three of fnatic's players were experiencing freezes following network problems caused by a DDoS attack on the ESL's servers.

The match was then paused, with fnatic calling for a round restart, which was immediately declined by Evil Geniuses, who went on to win the match 18-12.

Kovanen has now put the blame on the tournament admins, who had allegedly indicated in the first place that restarting the round was out of the question.

"It sucks that it happened, but this was the ESL's fault," he told HLTV.org. "At first, our manager went over to talk to them and see what's up and the ESL said the rules say the rounds stand, because we cannot go back like 40 seconds and see what would have really happened.

"Changing the money situation would have probably messed the game up a little bit, so they told us, 'the match is gonna stay as it is' and 30 minutes of arguing later, fnatic somehow got the admins to agree that if we agreed, we would replay the round with $5k for both teams.

"That just made us look like the bad guys, admins should not be doing that and putting the blame on us instead, it sucks that it happened but I still feel like we were the better team in that match."

The victory against fnatic put Evil Geniuses at the top of group, together with mousesports and Frag eXecutors, with Kovanen reckoning that a place in the knock-out stage is a possibilty.

"I think mouz is going to be harder, at least for us to play against, than fnatic, so I would say they are our biggest threat, I think all the teams are definitely beatable in our group, we beat both FX and mTw at Arbalet Cup, if we just play well and then wrap a win against oXmoze then anything is possible," he concluded.

100% agreed. As I wrote in the other thread: This is no one's fault except ESL's. They are the league and they set the rules. Name one sport where the referees decide to ask the players on what decision should be made. That is beyond ridiculous and bushleague. No rule should EVER include the participants who are competing. It is not fair to ask a competitor, who is giving 110% and everything he has to WIN, to use 'moral judgement' against an opponent. ESL once again showing they have no idea what they're doing.

nonsense...name one sport where in the rules, it's possible for the "sport" to crash...the game crashed, the players were unable to play, EG should have shown some fairplay and accept to replay the round imo.

Different sports have different rules. Don't compare rules of NBA to cs. And so you know, this season in the NHL the power went out in an arena, so they paused the game, and continued it couple days later in a different city. Its not nonsense, shit happens. What Slashered said is 100% correct, when you're in the middle of the match, you can't ask the other team to "play fair". All this "ohhh poor sportsmanship", take a look at any sport in the world, I could see it now world cup soccer final game, and SOMEONE takes a dive. They're trying to win, not be moral or whatever people are saying.

it isn't ESL's fault but rather the CEBIT one. they check servers and the network there, the championships are only one part of the CEBIT. and if one stupid idiot mean to hack the servers, it isn't the problem of ESL :) the decision of the admins was RIGHT and FAIR, what should they do instead?! EG and FX didn't agree and the game moved on. it happened and ok, you can't change it.. next pls!

Yeah so fnatic got the admins to agree if EG agress, but EG wouldn't? And why exactly aren't they the bad guys? They had their opportunity to act in the spirit of fair play but they didn't. Doesn't matter what the admins said at first, does it? Or am I missing something?

I doubt that any of you guys saying eg's behaviour is bad and so on, wouldn't do the same thing in that situation. It's not eg's fault that ESL messed up :)

I find it funny that no one actually thanks ESL for the whole event. :)

Who's actually hosting this event? Inviting top players and teams, handing out hundreds of thousands in cash, making it able for unworthy little peasants like you actually watch the event? Try focusing on the positive things ESL do.

Sure it's the ESL's fault that it happened. But this has NOTHING TO DO with the fact that EG had to choose between either allowing a restart, which was the fair thing to do (winning a 1v3 vs lagged out guys, what the hell?), or being huge dicks and refusing. The fact that the situation is the ESL's fault is NOT related to the choice that was made by the EG players.

haha, love all the fanboys who comment about this "fair play"-shit...EG are assholes, but fnatic has played oh so fair, trying to persuade the admins into restarting the round and therefore mess up the whole money system...fnatic just came out of the eco and should be granted 5k, while eg was in a pretty decent cash-situation and should get a few k reduced? wake up! its not fair for players to lagg out, but it isn't fair to mess with the whole money-system either, especially on train where being fully equipped is so important...and who ever said that putting yourself at disadvantage has anything to do with "sportmanship" or "fair play"?

ESL should give them money for the passage to this tournament. Fail of the year.

It's actually fnatic that are showing bad sportmanship by whining so hard to the admins when they probably knew the rules.
