Liquid narrowly avoid defeat against visa-affected Spirit

The new Liquid project required a decider, where at one point they were down 9-3, to beat a donk-less Spirit.

Liquid had to work for victory on their LAN debut

"Finally, on the NA side, I can actually use the [jetlag excuse]," Casper "cadiaN" Møller joked before Liquid scraped past Spirit (Nuke 16-14, Anubis 10-13, Ancient 13-10).

His new Liquid lineup came into BLAST Spring Groups late after playing the IEM Chengdu qualifier — where they lost to M80 in the final — in the United States, but few would have expected them to struggle so much against a Spirit side forced to utilize Oleg "baz" Kulynych and Sergey "hally" Shavaev instead of Boris "magixx" Vorobiev and superstar Danil "donk" Kryshkovets.

donk, magixx ruled out of BLAST Spring Groups due to visa issues

What followed was a valiant effort from Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov and company, as Spirit reminded the world of the quality they possess even without donk on the server.

Marquee signing Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov, on a LAN debut of his own, was slow to get going on Nuke before coming alive and dominating proceedings on Anubis and the first half of Ancient as he put a visibly unpracticed Liquid to the sword.

Down 9-3 on the deciding map of Ancient, however, Liquid finally rallied to show their true selves as they put together a streak of eight CT rounds to save the series.

"It's easy to judge us in the first week, the first month, but it's a long journey," cadiaN continued pre-game. "Expectations are high, but understand now, that it's a lot of different CS schools merging into one. There's no doubt that the skill is there, the personalities are there."

The ambitious world-wide project will now face GamerLegion for a place in the group final, while Spirit drop to the lower bracket, where the frightening prospect of facing FaZe awaits.

Liquid kicked off proceedings with a flawless pistol round on Nuke, but their good spirits did not last long as Spirit caught off Keith "NAF" Markovic on Ramp before putting together several first-class Upper executes to end the half with an above-par five round tally.

The Russian side accelerated to a 12-10 lead as the sides flipped, and the difference in practice was obvious as Liquid's Upper executes faltered due to an inability to even get out of the Squeaky door.

At crunch time, however, Liquid's superior individuals came alive with Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis and Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken — who ended the map with 25 headshot kills — finding impact to save the map and somehow snatch Spirit's pick 16-14.

If that result was supposed to put Spirit in their place, it did not have the desired effect as chopper's men responded by racing to an 8-2 lead on Liquid's pick of Anubis.

A flashy Twistzz triple kill on the secondary AWP could have resuscitated Liquid, but the Canadian's adrenaline-fuelled decision to go through the smoke handed the round back to Spirit in a round that summarised the gaps in the fresh-faced lineup's game.

The six-round deficit at half-time proved too much to climb for Liquid, who slumped to a 10-13 defeat as they somehow found themselves facing a decider against a coach and a stand-in.

Still reeling, Liquid entered Ancient in the same vein, and Spirit kept the pressure on off the back of some incredible fragging from chopper and sh1ro.

Liquid struggled to get control of the B Lane in particular, with baz and chopper combining to throttle their defaults and end the half with a 9-3 lead once again. Liquid were four rounds away from a lower-bracket elimination game against FaZe.

This was the moment, though, that Liquid flipped the script — but, even then, it easily could have gone wrong. cadiaN's 10-second defuse, with two Spirit players not peeking, saved the second pistol round, and only a Felipe "skullz" Medeiros 1vs2 clutch in the anti-eco ensured they maintained the economic advantage for their CT half.

Those two rounds proved crucial as Liquid kept their heads up and finally put together a streak of their own, recovering from 3-9 down to 11-9 up as their individual ability shone through. From there, there were no more twists as Liquid closed the map out 13-10 and series 2-1.

yeah this team is doomed. Nearly lost against a team with 2 stand-ins, one of them being the coach. And it could've been 2-0 for Spirit but Liquid fluked Nuke.

"doomed" is a big statement to make when this is their first official outside of NA. Sure, could've been more decisive, but they won. They have 4 players who have been in the top 20 and their potential will be realized.

Spirit (with donk and magixx) lost to 9z with coach TGE playing and with a player who had recently joined the team, months ago I don't see any reason to diminish Liquid's victory, to be honest... I think in 3 to 6 months Liquid will be ready to beat any team

It's safe to say that Chopper had better calls than cadiaN but that 9 - 3 comeback on Ancient proved that Liquid had better individual performances. The stats don't matter, it's the wins. Liquid need to focus more on their calls, the individual skill is there, the only thing missing is more experience with each other and stomping pressure. 100% the game would've still been a 2-1 (but Spirit winning) if donk and magixx were there but considering that Spirit had more practice than Liquid, it's still looking good for them

idk maybe the fact that he's the one who makes their strats? he's not a robban type of coach. Also overdrive hinted at that ;-)

if he is a very tactical coach then fine, he can probably call when needed. but I am pretty sure analysis/prep is very different from actual on server calling. idk tho, if overdrive says so then maybe there is something to it

Yeah, but making strats and actually executing them is a different story. He definitely helped with the tactical side but I highly doubt he took over the igl role

Of course, the complete Spirit would have won easily... but Spirit with 2 completes still has more chemistry than this new Liquid has now... and besides, I think right now 4 or 5 teams at most are stronger than Spirit (with donk and magixx), to be honest

I'm talking about in-game chemistry, bro (understanding each player’s movements, tactics, positioning, etc.)... they've been playing together for less than a month, you can't compare it to a team that played together for a season... even if Spirit are without two players, they still have the same coach, same igl, same game plans... it's much simpler to adapt the squad, this is the type of chemistry I'm referring to

Same, but is a "bit" understandable, much effort to win a 2-complete team, also cadiaN played shit, but Liquid needs a lot more chemistry and plug, like, this 2-complete Spirit has more flow than Liquid, so it puts a lot of pressure on cadiaN, whos IGL'ing, so it says respect for his KD.

because this win is not something to celebrate about. The fact that they nearly lost to a team with two stand-ins, one of them being the coach, renders this victory as worthless.

I actually think it's fine. If you look at the stats the main thing that stands out is cadian's 29 - 48. That is not a normal cadian statline. That is not a normal AWP statline. So it's to be expected that this key problem with solve itself with more time. Presumably cadian's brain is overloaded with managing this rag tag uncoordinated team in its early stages and his individual level has plummeted as a result. He also looked exhausted and nervous in his prematch interview. Pretty obvious that it's just too soon to expect to see results from this new team. Just Wait TM.

Spirit made it way closer than everyone thought it would be. Didn't expect them to take a map off of Liquid let alone hit the double-digits on every map, being 4 round away from victory on the decider. They would have probably closed it out if it wasn't for that 2v4 As weird as it may sound, that loss seems to have more pros than cons. If they pulled off a win over Liquid and then beat GL, they would have to stay for another few days waiting for all groups to be concluded to play the Group B final. If they go out early, they'll have more time to prepare for what's seemingly a more important tournament that is Katowice I just hope everything will be fine with their VISAs and we get to see Spirit at full strength

I really appreciate the word choice of the title. You would never really consider a professional boxer win the game if he tried sooooooo hard to defeat another boxer that broken his right arm. Donk isn't here causing this team had an academy player and the coach to play against one of the teams with the most Top players and Liquid couldn't still win it easily. The result for this new Liquid is definitely unsatisfiable to most Liquid fans I believe. The performance of cadianN's first Liquid Blast is really awful. Unlike the coach, he's still a professional player, AWPer and was considered as one of the Top 20 players on HLTV, and his ADR was even lower than the ADR of Spirit's coach sometimes. Such ADRs are unforgivable for cadianN. He really need to pay more attention on the game. I don't think such ADR could just be explained as worse skills. Also, the performance of Yekindar yesterday was also unbelievably awful. Always died meaninglessly and failed to get the kills which he actually could get. Twistzz's performance was outstanding yesterday. I think Liquid still needs a long time to adjust their playing style and increase their cooperation with each other. BTW, baz of Spirit is a diamond in the rough. I am really looking forward to his performance after he became the team member of real professional teams.
