IEM Katowice 2024 Play-inCloud9 send Virtus.pro packing to enter IEM Katowice group stage
Boombl4’s side prevailed in a high-stakes Russian derby to enter the main portion of the event.
Cloud9 are through to the group stage of IEM Katowice 2024 following a 2-1 victory over Virtus.pro in the Play-In Stage. After a rough start to the tournament, with a shocking loss to Rebels and a three-map series against BetBoom, Kirill "Boombl4" Mikhailov’s side put in a convincing display against the current world No.4, who gave a poor account of themselves in this Russian derby.
“After a bad start, there were bad emotions and a bad mood in our team,” an emotional Boombl4 said after the series. “I’m really happy for our team. We are back, and we are still in the tournament.”
It’s the end of the road for Virtus.pro in Katowice. After cruising through the BLAST Premier Spring Groups, where it beat BIG twice and Cloud9, Dzhami "Jame" Ali’s side looked out of sorts and disjointed in this tournament. They now have less than two weeks to work on their mistakes before the EU RMR kicks off in Bucharest.
Cloud9 came out of the gate looking lively and romped to an 8-4 lead on Overpass. Virtus.pro responded after the side switch, but their pistol round victory was immediately countered by their opponents with a triple kill from Denis "electroNic" Sharipov, who was in great shape throughout the series. Cloud9 kept the tempo high after that and quickly locked up the map.
Virtus.pro looked livelier on Anubis and dominated the game almost from the get-go, with David "n0rb3r7" Danielyan topping the scoreboard with a 1.53 rating. However, that intensity was nowhere to be found on Ancient, where Cloud9 were in control from the start.
