Jonas Gundersen steps down as NIP COO

The former Danish player is leaving the company after four years.

Gundersen had been with NIP since January 2020

Ninjas in Pyjamas Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jonas Gundersen has left the Swedish organization, he announced Monday. A replacement has yet to be named.

A former Counter-Strike player during the early 2000s, Gundersen joined Ninjas in Pyjamas in January 2020 after a year with North in the same role. He had recently become less involved in the company’s esports operations following the appointment of Erik Wendel as Director of Esports and the return of Björn "THREAT" Pers to the organization as General Manager.

“The time feels right for me to hand over the controls and head for the next chapter in my career,” he wrote in a LinkedIn post, highlighting NIP’s growth from a small operation to a global organization with over 300 employees, 16 teams and five offices. Last year, NIP completed a merger with Chinese giants ESV5, entering the LPL, China’s franchise competition in League of Legends.

Jonas Gundersen: the former CS player who wants to build a new era for NiP

During Gundersen’s time at the helm of the company’s esports operations, NIP completed the blockbuster signing of Nicolai "device" Reedtz, a move that he believed would take the organization to a new era. But the Danish AWPer ended up being shipped back to Astralis less than halfway into a three-year deal and after spending almost ten months on the bench.

In January 2023, Gundersen declared his belief that Ninjas in Pyjamas had the necessary tools to contend for Majors following the signing of Daniil "headtr1ck" Valitov from NAVI. Twelve months on, only two of those players remain on the team, which is currently ranked 24th in the world.

Gundersen did not disclose what his next venture entails, merely stating that it will involve "driving impact and creating value across a variety of entities.”

“I am genuinely excited about all the positive and ambitious vibes out there, and I feel more than ever, that the future of esports looks incredibly bright,” he added. “More on that soon.”

What just got back!? GM since sep 2023 hello? Also before that he was coach between 2020-2022 And then he was employed as analyst 2022-2023. In the last 4 year that NiP has sucked, Threat has literally been a key part of the org for 3.5 lol.

Yes being gm since only sep 2023 is just back. Remember that since then hes had to organize and put together 2 new academy teams, and didnt get "his" roster together until late november(a team which basically didnt play in january and december btw). Since then NiP has only played 2 t1 lans with their real roster, in which they've met faze#2(lost) Navi#3(lost) G2#6(twice lost) and CoL#8(won). He is also one of the key people behind a meeting in order to help restore and rebuild the future of swedish counterstrike by all of the major swedish orgs. This in my opinion is a pretty good step in the right direction. So far hes been open and communicated his vision for the teams and has made his intentions clear about roster moves being in the hands of the coaches(except for these first rostermoves to start off) So id say, so far, not too bad, atleast in comparison to nip in 2023. As for his earlier stints, its both been mentioned by him and the players that roster moves weren't in the coaches(his and djls) hands and were managed by the higher ups(Jonas Gundersen). Threat was a good coach back in 2020/2021 when NiP were still presentable, this can be seen both in their results from that time but also from interviews with nawwk etc. His blunder from the time as a coach was the mismanagement of ztr and LNZ aswell as other talent. He has owned up to this and has actually taken responsibility(unlike anyone else in the org) I would not blame threat as an analyst for NiP being bad in the second half of 2022, they had REZ awping right in the middle of his best year so far as a rifler(this was seemingly forced on him by djl and gundersen). Aswell as constant roster moves and the whole device situation, not to mention that he didnt control the horrendous rostermoves back then. Threat was definitely not the problem in 2022/2023
