Direct invites and earning a spot at the Major in the BYOC were a thing in the early days of Counter-Strike before the game grew to have grueling online qualifiers. The Majors themselves also expanded over the years, from 16-team affairs to 24 with ultra competitive LAN qualifiers. Remember when teams just had to get a Legends spot?
