mopoz: "Our attitude was good, but it wasn't enough to win games"

mopoz hopes his new-look roster will return stronger for the second Major of the year in Shanghai.

KOI's roster has had to deal with a plethora of big pieces departing for supposedly greener pastures, namely players like Álvaro "SunPayus" García and Alejandro "alex" Masanet. Rather than crumble, the squad turned to regional stalwarts like Tiago "JUST" Moura and Renato "stadodo" Gonçalves and beat the odds to make PGL Major Copenhagen, whilst their former teammates could not do the same on seemingly better squads.

The Iberian team's Major run was a disappointment, however, as they have exited with an 0-3 record and without registering a single map win. SAW might have smashed them in their opening game but KOI had chances to take maps off ENCE and FURIA, only to squander them.

After exiting the Major at the hands of FURIA, Alejandro "mopoz" Fernández-Quejo Cano stopped for a quick chat with HLTV to discuss his team's performance in Copenhagen.

Tell me how you're feeling right now.

I'm feeling frustrated. I'm feeling really really bad right now because we just didn't really compete at our highest level, it was really difficult for us. We didn't find the solutions inside the game, but it is how it is.

What do you think it was that hurt you this week? It was a tough draw, you played three teams people expected to go through, but what do you think was holding you back?

I don't know. People didn't really expect us to go forward, but it doesn't really matter for us. We are just going to keep working on ourselves, inside the team talking about everything that happened here. Our attitude as a team was good, but it wasn't enough to win games.

This is your second Major, you had three debutants as well, is this the type of learning experience that could be good for a team like yours?

I think that this is going to be a really good experience for the team. Even if this is my second Major it doesn't really matter, because for me it's the same as playing any other tournament to be honest. I think this will be helpful for our team, because we made a lot of mistakes and we have to learn from them.

If you zoom out to when this roster was formed, you lost big pieces like alex and others. Are you still proud of yourself for the journey you had just to get to this Major?

Yeah. After losing SunPayus, alex, MartinezSa and other players, it's really hard to come back and make a really good team, but we are always finding good pieces to replace them, right now we have dav1g as an IGL and he's doing a really good job. I don't know what more to say honestly, I have high expectations of us but we need more time.

For the next Major adamS will have a bit more experience, as will dav1g as an IGL. Can we expect to see you back?

Yeah. I hope that in Shanghai we will be ready for the Major, I'm fully confident about them and myself, so we are going to do it for sure.

That can't be a solution, we already had a taste of international Riders and it didn't look good, Martinez coming back is your best hope. I 100% agree -stadodo though.

Well that's not true. International Riders is the most successful one till now in terms of qualify ratio in big events. It just lasted to short cause of Smooya attitude and Shokz not being motivated to play anymore.

I can't recall international riders making any deep runs at big events, maybe I forgot something Spanish riders reached semis in Cologne once, I think that iteration with sunpayus was the best roster they've ever had

Yes, indeed. Sunpayus roster was the best they had but they were struggling so hard at first. I'm not talking about the best roster but the one who had better qualifying ratio from open quals. Smooya roster didn't make any deep run in tier 1.

There's no way. In terms of qualifying it's surely at best equal with the lineup that had Sunpayus, I remember at least one instance of sAw beating Riders with smooya in a Blast qualifier (that one where they played Mirage xD), and I remember Sunpayus beating saw there too. Idk in terms of ESL Masters since that TO is dead in Iberia (?) but I think Riders was always better at those. What do you mean big Big events? Because smooya was there for like 6 months and that's the best part of Riders I remember, they tried other awps I think, I remember larsen but he was quite bad.

Smooya riders was in fact the most dominant team in the derby history: hltv.org/matches/2346394/movistar-riders.. hltv.org/matches/2346399/movistar-riders.. hltv.org/matches/2347458/movistar-riders.. hltv.org/matches/2348471/saw-vs-movistar.. hltv.org/matches/2349625/saw-vs-movistar.. hltv.org/matches/2349988/saw-vs-movistar.. I'm just talking about the Smooya period. Larsen team even got relegated in ESEA (tbh also Lowell was playing just by obligation and retired afterwards)

True. But most of those games didnt have highest stakes. If you are talking about qualification to relevant events, it's 2-1 for Riders. Riders with smooya was never going to be good long term, it was more of a symptom of Spain's lack of players. Then somehow they hit the jackpot with back to back consistent AWPs, all of this in a 2 year period before being almost forced to play with stadodo. The Spanish Core is 100% must keep, imo JUST can stay and the AWP is a bit harsh yea... No other good available awps in Spain/Portugal, and SA probably way too expensive if they wanted to take a risk on that. I see them keeping the same roster for a while.

I don't think they will do changes, specially after being able of qualifying for a Major but I would like to see try over stadodo. There is no optimal replacement for Just since deathzz departed in bad terms and sausol roles don't fit.

Bro they were ass with sunpayus playing online aswell. It was crazy actually how many times they lost in the first day of open qualys

this is a so ridiculous situation and performance to be happy, we need a more competitive scen and teams with less level as a second line to pick up new players and refresh the roster. They won't improve with the same roster past honeymoon, it's impossible
