Rio de Janeiro to host IEM Fall 2024

The Brazilian city will host an IEM stop for the third year in a row.

The IEM circuit returns to Rio de Janeiro

The ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) has announced that the IEM Fall tournament scheduled for October 7-13 will take place in Rio de Janeiro. The playoff stages will be held in front of a crowd at the Farmasi Arena (previously known as the Jeunesse Arena) during the last three days of the event.

IEM Rio 2024 will feature a $250,000 prize pool and 16 teams. Eleven spots will be filled by invitations, while the last five will be determined by online qualifiers in Europe, North America, South America and Asia.

This will be the third consecutive year in which Rio de Janeiro will host an IEM event. In 2022, IEM Rio doubled as that year's second CS:GO Major, with Outsiders beating HEROIC to the title. Last year, HEROIC were again on the losing side of the final, this time against Vitality.

“We’re excited to bring IEM to Rio for the third consecutive year and welcome fans back to the Farmasi Arena,” said Marc Winther, Head of Game Ecosystems, Counter-Strike at EFG.

"South America is an ever-growing market for esports and a priority for EFG as we continue to foster communities around competition throughout the region. The mixture of IEM's global renown, the caliber of competition, and the unmatched atmosphere fans bring to Brazil lines IEM Rio 2024 to be another unforgettable event."

IEM Rio 2024 will count toward Intel Grand Slam, with six teams currently in the race for the $1 million prize. The winner of the Brazilian event will also earn a spot at IEM Katowice 2025.

dude, carmac from ESL was literally having fun with liminha and bt0 on stream, fooling around, they will have and host him of course carmac even joked and said gaules lost the bid to broadcast the major because bt and liminha spent all the money on food the fuck are you saying bro

You do realize that 99% of the Brazilian community wants Gaules to be part of the event right? So why would ESL not work in a collaboration? I´m sure they want their event to succeed.

cus when the last time they listened to 99% of brazilian community their major became the failure and a laughing stock and as a fan of cs i wish to see iem rio being on par with some of the biggest events in the calendar

rio major was a fiasco, but its not community's fault. The arena was poorly planned and people couldnt see anything from a lot of seats.

who says it was a community fault in the first place? it was esl fault for listening to community needs, cs fans are far for being the smart ones and have 0 idea what would make cs event a good event. Brazilians wanted gaules, they got them gaules. Viewers in home had a worse experience because of that since u could hear gaules casting in english stream and the crowd in rio was simply not hyped to watch that major, which i assume was a reason due to gaules casting and having lack of real brazilian casters. After all very few ppl are hardcore cs fans and would get hyped watching a gotv stream. Ur community has choosen meetups and foodtrucks over cs on major and tbf no one really saw that coming. We were promised to get biggest and loudest fanbase, we got half empty arena during some playoff matches when all tickets were sold. We add to it cheating incident which made even worse for fans in arena to watch the games and it resulted in rather diapoiting atmosphere. I know brazilian community is capable of showing a crowd like paris did, but esl simply needs to do it their way instead of listening to the fans, who know nothing in the first place.

I agree with you in some parts, i do think that choosing to take photos instead of watching a FUCKING MAJOR playoff is a questionable decision but we have to keep in mind that before the rio major, almost no tier-s tournaments were held here, so it would be their only chance to get a signature or a photo with the players that they love. And no, Brazil does not lack casters, I heard that gaules wasnt supposed to cast it at all, but one of the casters got so much hate cuz people wanted gaules to do it that he decided to step out.

They didn`t listen to 99% of the community. Actually, then went ahead of themselves trying to please everyone as much as they can and made a huge mistake. You know brazilians are passionate. They know. So what did they do? While playoff games were happening, they literally posted several brazilian idols/legends just oustside the arena to interact with the fans. 99,999999999999999% of the fans would never have a chance to see those players personally if it weren't for that, which is very nice. But during the playoffs? Come on wtf were they doing, of course it would result in a tiny crowd doing pretty much no noise at all. That and the shitty planning they did on/with the arena. There were really a lotta seats you couldn't see shit

you biased and know absolutely nothing lol... you have no idea what happened there and that the issue was related to the ORG itself cause the places where people should stay didn't have visibility to watch the stage and that is why showed "empty" spaces, cause people literally left those sits to stay in front of the arena or somewhere else were they could see the major itself. Nothing related to community or host (Gaules) or anything that you might be thinking... Next time before posting useless things try to investigate a bit more, other than just trash talk about something you are clueless you might find some explanation or reasons behind the whole "fiasco" that you believe it happen. BTW, there is no LAN event in history that will bring the same emotion to the players regardless of their nationality as it brought on RIO, you can see all the testimonials around on internet all pro players saying that was the best feelings that they had on their life. OFC it will show up some haters saying about people spitting, or having death threats and bla bla bla, but all of this comments are just stupid and you will never be able to understand how nice was the event and atmosphere around there. within that, I wish you more light in your life, maybe you need to find some, cause on the end I just can see your dislikes because we are brazilians and doesn't matter what is related to Brazil you will always find a reason to trash talk anything ;)

it's funny because you have already experienced all of this with your football hooliganism (people have literally died in latin america in football violence related events) and instead of saying what you already know happens in your country you'll just deflect to bad arena security in europe. here's your answer as to why it is so: up until now it wasn't needed. there was no precedent. esports was safe and events were not targeted by shady actors. now thanks to gambling addicts and shady gambling enterprises we're introduced to the darker side of this business.

So europe got an excuse huh? Convenient. England also got hooligan problems in football with people dying. Spain have people being racist on cameras and on the street with racist protests happening in public against Vini Jr. Terrorist attacks with knifes, guns, leaving fatal victims on the streets, shopping malls and what not throughout europe and you got no precedent? "oh but on esports we were safe", you are not safe in the streets for fuck sake. Why would you be safe in a crowded closed area with thousands of people from all parts of the world? You people are just sloppy, thinking nothing bad ever happens to the "civilized 1st world country" like if you were special or something. Guess what, it happens and it was shameful. Way more than one random idiot spiting on a player.

its very disingenuous to suggest that this thing with the gambling rivalry wouldnt have happened anywhere else if the major had been hosted in the US or mongolia the same people would have paid for the same tickets and paid for flights for the same agents to interrupt a G2 stage match

The fact that this has not happened anywhere else just disproves everything you said. And the fact that there was a countdown and they still managed to invade the stage shows that security is shit. Would security be this shit anywhere else? No, probably not.

jL was receiving death threats before the major and made it public. Was that Brazilians? No, it was the same kind of people that invaded the stage. Bettors and skincels. And the fact that we had events here over the years and the only complaint is about spiting and boring crowd, I would say your bitching is misplaced. Brazilians clear europeans any day

The worst crowds in the world. The worst fanbase in the entire world. More crowd cheating. More crowd not showing up for anyone but BR teams. More death threats to players. More spitting on players. More come to Brazil. Why does BR keep getting events? The fanbase has demonstrated that they are not mature enough or civilized to host events over and over and over.

Sorry, but what in my response would trigger you to go full victim mode all of a sudden? I never said you should travel far to the major. The arguement goes against the Brazilian fans that were IN the Rio major. Not against the brazilians who travel overboard. I would never cross the atlantic to watch an esports event, and I don't judge those who wouldn't either.

Thats literally the reason why there was no one in other matches. When events are hosted in europe, its quite easy for neighboor countries to buy tickets and fly over there, its like 2 hours flight and a 5 bucks ticket so you have people all over the world. Now imagine, who the HELL is gonna travel all the other way of the world to watch a few cs2 matches? Dont complain no brazillians are watching boring matches, travel and support ur own team lfmao

If Furia go on like they did in the last few events they will not even qualify and Imperial + Pain will get the spots.

probably furia will be invited sad to see mibr, pain and imperial fighting for 1 spot if any of them are not invited as local hero (also they can lose the spot to 9z) legacy also maybe can get the NA spot if liquid and col be invited

People were disappointed that Furia didn't make it to the final. And the events in Brazil have practically 90% Brazilians, some Argentines, Chileans, but few. It's a very restricted audience. In Europe, people of different nationalities go to events. I think that's why many thought the fans were "silent".

Normally ESL would sign a 3-year hosting contract with the host city's municipal government, so it's unlikely to be hosted in any other Brazilian city. Beijing was very unfortunate that the epidemic came 3 months after the first event in Beijing, and when China finally abandoned its zero-COVID policy, everyone assumed that the IEM would soon return to Beijing, not coming back to Chengdu after 15 years.
