HEROIC eliminate FURIA in Chengdu

The Brazilians were within reaching distance of the playoffs against MOUZ, but are now knocked out after faltering to HEROIC.

FURIA were one round away from the IEM Chengdu playoffs against MOUZ, but failed to close out the second map, Vertigo, and were then beaten in the decider. After stealing HEROIC’s Ancient pick, the Brazilian squad looked well in place to survive to fight another day in the Group A lower bracket, but in the end faltered once again.

The Brazilians put on a show of force on Ancient to kick things off, ending it 13-6, and where Andrei "⁠arT⁠" Piovezan played a big part with a 1.69 rating as part of the main fragging trio alongside Kaike "⁠KSCERATO⁠" Cerato and Yuri "⁠yuurih⁠" Santos while his counterpart, Damjan "⁠kyxsan⁠" Stoilkovski, floundered.

After the game, FURIA’s IGL lamented that he and his team let the series slide away on their pick and the decider. "The second map, Nuke, we lost some key rounds on the T side and we lost pistols on CT, which is really hard to come back from, so it was on to Overpass," he said. But kyxsan, who had come alive on Nuke with a 1.56 rating, didn’t let up.

Despite a poor showing to kick things off, with just three frags in 20 rounds, HEROIC’s IGL picked himself up not only as a leader, but also in the fragging department, and was also crucial in his team’s victory on Overpass after excelling on Nuke.

The decider map came down to the wire as both teams were 11-11. HEROIC, having suffered a loss on B, evacuated the site and rotated to A on their leaders’ command, and then FURIA backtracked and ran into the stacked site. They didn’t let up on match point and won a 3vs3 in the dying embers of the final round to seal the deal, 13-11.

FURIA, from being one round away from the playoffs to being eliminated in the final round of the decider map in the lower bracket, will have nightmares after this one. HEROIC, on the other hand, now have to face off against G2 in the final round of the Group A lower bracket for a chance at playing in the arena.

"We already played G2 twice in the last month or two, so we kind of know what to expect from them," kyxsan said after beating FURIA. "But that’s a lot of time in CS, so we still need to check what they’re doing because it’s easy to change a lot of stuff in the space of two months. We just have to play our game again and check what they’re doing."
