karrigan: "Retirement is not on the horizon for me"

The Danish tactician said he wants to continue pushing everyone to their limit after adding another title to his CV on the day he celebrated his 34th birthday.

karrigan said that he wants to keep making CS history

FaZe picked up their first title of 2024 on Sunday as they defeated MOUZ 2-0 in the grand final of IEM Chengdu in front of a sold-out crowd at the Wuliangye Chengdu Performing Arts Centre.

For Finn "karrigan" Andersen, it has been a highly successful return to FaZe after a first stint with the North American organization between 2016 and 2018. Since re-signing with FaZe in 2021, he has led the team to eight LAN trophies, including a long-awaited Major crown in Antwerp in 2022.

The IEM Chengdu trophy came on the day karrigan celebrated his 34th birthday. With a career dating back to the mid-2000s in 1.6, he is one of the oldest and most experienced players in all of esports, and he made it clear that he doesn't know when he will call it quits.

"The main thing is that I want to make history with FaZe Clan," he told reporters at a press conference after the final. "That's why I came back. I knew when I came [back] to FaZe that this would probably be my last team.

"I want to push everyone to their limit. I'm pushing myself to the limit. Retirement is not really on the horizon for me. The most important thing is that I will never let the team down. If I'm not the right captain for the team one day, I will understand that. But for now, I think I'm still improving individually and as a captain, and the team is improving."

karrigan acknowledged that winning the IEM Chengdu trophy will probably "release some pressure from our shoulders" after a string of second-place finishes, even though he insisted that he was "super proud" that the team had managed to reach so many finals in Counter-Strike 2.

broky: "I used this tournament as a kind of vacation"

FaZe will have only a few days' rest before going back on the road. The next tournament is the ESL Pro League Season 19 in Malta, which could put them one step closer to winning another Intel Grand Slam season.

"Now with a victory, I can sleep a little bit better the next few days," he said. "[I want to] try to keep making history and win as much as possible.

"The main goal is IEM Cologne for me, right now. The most important tournament of the year is Cologne, together with the Shanghai Major. And we'll take it from there. Why not be a two-time Grand Slam winner?"

For FalleN i am not quite so sure, if arT doesn't get benched and replaced in the next few days i don't think FalleN will continue with Furia and let's be honest he would not join a tier 2-3 BR team in this stage of his career. Just like with karrigan Furia will probably be FalleN's last team as a player.

I'm with you on that. I wished to see those 2 playing for many more years, but with how things are going in FURIA I think FalleN is about to leave soon and probably announce retirement, which will be so very fucking sad. Those 2 and f0rest, too. But guess that train has departed already =(

Obviously glaive is a good igl. Trash IGLs can't lead their team to 4 , let alone 1 major. But to me, I feel Karrigan is much better. Glaive did it with a core over the course of 3 years. Karrigan won more trophies alongside much more teams with less powerful players. The reason why they peaked in 22 was that they were in perfect form. Now this is another peak and I hope they keep winning.

the fact that god zonic was able to coach bot apex to look like a half-decent IGL exposes gla1ve pretty hard. in hindsight it's looking like zonic's system was the main reason for the astralis era. gla1ve's contribution was as much in IGLing as it was in fragging. as soon as he and xyp stopped fragging the team went from top1 to irrelevant and never recovered.

they won everything in the online era with ALEX. then they struggled with apex IGL and yes, they did win a few tournaments thanks to zywoo hypercarry but there was no positive trend overall. why do you think they finally went international and dropped baldfraud? the results weren't good enough for a team that has zywoo, the best player in the world at the time. they finally became the best team in the world with zonic, magisk and dupreeh. now they are struggling again, last place in kato, fluke to semifinal at the major. on paper it doesn't seem so bad but you will see, the major was an overperformance and it's all downhill from here until they get a real coach and IGL. zywoo's hypercarry days are over, he's now a top 5 player who needs an actual team to succeed and baldfraud + apex is no foundation for a team.

I think karrigan simply had the fortune of becoming an igl at the right time and mostly being surrounded by stars. Whenever faze won an event, it was usually because of 2 or more individuals over performing, and not so much due to strats or mid game calling.

Look at other teams. Most top teams these days have solid player, unlike back in the Navi Zeus days. Faze is doing all this whitout Zywoo, Device or S1mple. Take away Zywoo from Apex for example and he wont even make playoffs most of the time. G2 whitout Insane Monesy form would be laughing stock. Your take is just shit bro.

My take is an insane compliment to the others. Rain is one of the greatest players faze ever had. As modest as he is, his impact for faze is more valuable than most people would acknowledge. Broky literally is top 2 awper this year. Frozen was already touted to be better than niko. He already is more successful. Ropz is ropz. No matter how you wanna look at it, karrigan is surrounded with the best players atm.

Yet, karrigan has found success in every team he has been in and these players without him have not. Ropz and frozen struggled a bit when he left mouz. Faze clan was not successful under NiKo. Have to give credit where its due. Trophies follow him

Ignorant way to look at things. MAYBE they perform at their best, because Karrigan preparation is great... MAYBE they perform at their best because his reads alow everyone to think about nothing, but shooting when Karrigan dooes the majority of thinking. Do you think that you just shoot good and you gonna win things? Most of the shooting good happens, because of being in the right place at the right time. That's igl's job and coach job to talk about antistrats. Wannabe Igl's like Shox, Stevie, Yekindar, Electronic, Niko are prefect examples how shit is you take.

karrigan is surrounded by good players is not due to luck. players wanted to play with him, twistzz joined faze because he knew karrigan will join. ropz and frozen joined faze because they knew they'll be playing with karrigan again. there's a reason for that.

They are the best players because they became the best players under karrigan, not because they were top players before he joined them. broky was a passive baiter before karrigan joined FaZe, his impact with the AWP was non-existent and he only got anything done in clutches. frozen was a literal nobody before he joined mouz under karrigan. ropz never was a super star before karrigan. Twistzz was all but a shadow of himself when he got kicked from Liquid and look at how well he did under karrigan. rain dropped off a cliff when karrigan left FaZe and became a 1.0 rating average rifler, look at how he returned to form when karrigan came back. Only delusional haters refuse to see that karrigan has a unique ability to get 110-120% out of his players.

this is the worst take I've ever heard on Karrigan and Faze clan in general, if his players are over performing that's credit to the IGL not points taken, that's exactly what you want, Karrigan built this team, aside from Ropz, which star did he bring to the team? I remember the doubts around Twist, "he is good but not EU good" Karrigan of course made him shine even brighter, what about Broky? where did he come from? to this day I don't know he just came and performed, what about Rain, he had worst number in supposedly his prime years, he is the real deal, after all he have done to Faze the way he cried after the defeat in Kato just show how much he cares, it doesn't matter to him how much he won already, he wanna keep doing this.

You've never been in a team with a shitty captain & a great captain to see how big of an impact it can have. Having a great leader is inspiring and boosting you so much, it has such a massive impact on your mentality, mood and team atmosphere. It can make a group of random click in the best possible ways. That's why when I see a random star switching to the IGL role I can't help but facepalm because it's not that simple.

He's surfing on the back of the waves that he himself generated. Should he just fucking leave faze now that they're the absolute best team in the world at 34 years of age just to prove to Links234 on hltv that he can do it again or what? You're making absolutely 0 sense. Whatever he's doing, he's fucking good at it, because he's playing against stacked AF rosters all the fucking time, yet he's been in the grand finals of every single event they went to in the last 200+ days, winning 50% of them. I don't understand why people discredit all these S tier IGLs all the time. Of course they want to work with the best players, because they are the ones who can bring the IGLs victories. No sane IGL would want to play with fucking hext or noSee when they can have rain and broky on their team, lmao.

Honestly not necessarily true. I do think that humans can improve a lot but in my opinion there will be a thing that can't be improved or beaten. Of course the game will change and people as well but players from different generations is hard to compare because of the difference in time. Like NBA was a lot different back in the days compared to today.

what i said is necessarily true. every sport was different back in the days if compared to today. i dont know what you want to say? please explore the argument more. you are wrong here. name one things humans do not improve in over time. the margins to become greater than another might become smaller, yet they will never be zero, which means there will be a human that takes up that space in time. only because you wont live to see, does not mean its not happening. what about the nba? discussions are only found around delulus here. same in football. only delulus discuss.

Why is Usain Bolts record from 2009 still unbeaten. Do you think that humans will run faster and faster? Of course they won’t. There will be a limit to what a human can do. Usain Bolts record may not be it but there won’t be a significant change to the record in future no matter how much time passes.

yet there has been constant improvement over time in 100m world record progression. what did you expect for the 100m? i can run 100m in 14 seconds and im not that well trained. did you expect someone to better the world record by 7 seconds? stupid and weak argument of yours with the "only" one second in 100 years improvement ( which is an average improvement of 1/100s/year) better training methods, better nutrition, better planning, better techniques, better equipment, better sports places asoasf - as i said: we only get better and better and better at anything we do. and you are right, there are physical limits. as of now for 100m men its 9.12s IIRC, so we are half a second off, of what science calculated what time is possible. you can be sure a human will jump into the margin that exists. bolt had a very sloppy running technique ( shoulders & back). still: i urge you to name one things humans dont improve in over time! if you do think bolts record will stand the test of time, than there is no help for you. explore the argument more! also: yesterday, a 38year world record in discus-throwing was broken. this world record was set in 1986 by highly doped athlete from gdr, which had a system of systematic doping in place, which was installed by the government itself. so even a highly doped world record got beaten eventually. it just took some time. you are wrong with what you think.

And even if humans could run 100m in 0 seconds, what's after that. There is nothing to improve anymore timewise.

whats your problem, boy? i literally wrote: "and you are right, there are physical limits" yet we are far from reaching them. everywhere and regardless where you look. its impossible to move 100m in 0 seconds, since that would mean moving faster than light, which takes about 0,0000007 seconds to travel that distance. this would be the true physical limit of a 10ßm run. its also impossible to predict human evolution over a million years. maybe our legs grow twice as long? doesnt look like that, but who knows. the 9.12s are an as of now state. the limitation presented here is caused by the strength of the muscle in front of the knee of a runner. if methods ( legally of course) could be applied to make it stronger, the possible world record time would lower itself further. i think i talked about how we as a species improve over time. and since snooker doesnt have these kind of physical limitation its guaranteed that we will see someone better ronnie. which was the whole point "mr there will be never a ever be a better one".

Regardless saying that speaking English is easier for a Slovakian guy than Russian is absurd and at the end of the day he wasn't playing in his native language anyway not to mention he had more experience playing in Russian speaking team than English

Sure because every Slovakian learns different alphabet to speak niche language rather than English to communicate with everyone. You're wrong. Accept it and don't dig yourself deeper and deeper.

No one was IGLing pretty much in 2015-until he joined, they didn't really have a system and they were just a bunch of decent players playing with eachother in a rare EU mix team at the time. 2019/20 NiKo felt like sabotaging the team by being the IGL (which obviously didn't work) and NEO was only on trial which wouldn't be enough time to really get a cohesive system going. Infact I have no clue as to why ppl thought NiKo being a leader figure would be a good idea to begin with. The only good IGL FaZe ever signed to begin with was Karrigan.

My point is, in the case of Rain and Broky, they never even had another top tier IGL to play under. Idk if your above statement was meant to discredit Rain and Broky's HLTV ratings or not tbh but if that's the case, the argument supporting that is kinda dumb.

That's fair. Same way I felt you were discrediting karrigan in someway but a good IGL's job is to get most out of the players they have got and at the end of the day its up to players skill regardless how good of a IGL he is. Basically both can be true

And your point is...?
2024-04-15 15:13

The point was to get all conditions that would have to be met so greatest IGL of all time could have a chance at a Major trophy. At least 3 TOP20 players to get to a final 3 times in 10 years and if home countries of opposing team in the GF are at war with each other karrigan wins the final 100% of the time.

Those conditions only exist in your empty head. A win's a win, there are no asterisks to it, no ifs or buts, and there's absolutely no need to be a salty PoS about it. Teams beat everyone they can, and if there's no one left to beat at the end of a tournament, you've won it.

You're trying again to imply I'm salty about something. That's only your projection. All I did was list conditions under which karriggan rightfully won his Major at 32 years of age after multiple attempts while having 3-4 TOP20 players to help.

This. Even yesterday on Nuke he was always the one pushing for info, and going in first when they didn't have enough info to get a proper execute, that's why his stats on Nuke were bad again. Apart from those few games where he is the "bait", he is playing his best CS individually since Astralis.

What kind of logic do you have? Do you think that if I like Spirit, then they have to win all the time?)) I'll tell you a secret, but you have to support the team because you like it, not because it wins. Tomorrow FaZe will lose, will you stop supporting them? Is that how your head works?

Well, spirit lost, so what? Why didn't you say anything when they were winning everyone in a row, as if they were moving on a bulldozer? How does this cancel out the fact that karrigan is a bot who played 1/15 in the final of a major?
2024-04-15 16:55

What I did say at the time is that it's only a question of time before top teams figure out how to counter the neurotic chipmunk. Karrigan is an IGL who doesn't need to frag out to be successful, since he's good enough at calling & getting info for his team through self-sacrifices that they reliably reach grand finals for the past 200 days.
2024-04-15 16:59

Our conversation now is like this: I tell you that karrigan is playing like a bot, I give facts and examples based on the main match of the major, and in response to this you say "Spirit lost in the quarterfinals." Aren't you laughing at your own reasoning?

I KNEW IT. This dude will play till mid 40's if he can. I have all sorts of issues with him as an IGL, but got to give him props where he deserves it. He is a competitor at heart. He might even have one more roster in him before he even begins to consider it.

2024-04-16 13:35

Because his IGL value is far less than most people give him credit for, that his plan isn't a plan, but a very loose strategy that relies on individuals IGLing themselves and praying for individual pop offs to win, which only works with you have 4 top 20 players popping off to carry you though. They play slightly organized pug CS with better players.

I think everyone overrates the hell out of him. Not saying he is bad, just that he is nowhere near the level of hype. Countless great teams, some decent results, but not to the level any of those teams should have had. Participated on 3 rosters that could have had eras, none of which had one, of those one went on to have the most dominating era we've seen. He just isn't anywhere near the level people want to pretend he is.
