G2 to face Falcons in elimination match after M80 upset

It took M80 nine match points, but they caused the upset in the end.

M80 will rematch BetBoom in their lower bracket run

M80 pulled off the upset against G2 in a marathon series that played out over three maps with multiple overtimes on two of them. They continue through the lower bracket while G2 have just one life left in Group B.

Despite its length, the beginning of the series was a quick one, and M80 pulled out to a 1-0 lead after a 13-2 thrashing of Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen and company on Ancient. A near pristine T side was followed up by a forcebuy win after the pistol round on the CT side to give G2 an early warning.

A 1-7 deficit on Inferno spelled trouble for G2 as they kept running into a wall over and over, but in the end a strong mental game turned the tide and, after hitting overtime, Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov led the way to victory with 30 kills. M80 had two match points in the first overtime, but squandered them.

Vertigo also started with a big M80 lead, 7-2 on the T side, but G2 once again shortened the distance and, miraculously, clutched their way to a tie score on the 24th round, once again denying M80 two more match points. The third map standout, though, was Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač and HooXi topping the board for G2 while Nikola "NiKo" Kovač and m0NESY struggled to find any sort of impact with little over 50 ADR each.

Tensions ran high in the G2 camp throughout most of the series

Over the course of the three overtimes, M80 failed to close out two more match points. "I don't want to know," Fritz "slaxz-" Dietrich said after the match when asked if he knew how many match points they failed to convert. "We felt like we threw so many rounds. We had it, we always needed that one round. You could just see the experience we were missing."

Elias "s1n" Stein and company brought it home in the end, on the ninth match point of the series, 22-19. "We noticed an energy shift, but we managed to get it back up," the German IGL said. "The battery went full again. Rory, our coach, had some nice words, and at some point I also said that they're more afraid than us. I just saw a clip with HooXi slamming the desk or something."

G2's Danish in-game leader didn't hide his frustration after the game, either. "Straight up embarrassing how we play," he tweeted right after the match.

G2, who were smashed by The MongolZ and now lost to M80, will face a team struggling just as hard or even more than them in the Last Change Stage, Falcons, for survival in the tournament.

M80, on the other hand, will get a chance at revenge against BetBoom, the team that sent them to the lower bracket to begin with. "The first time we played them we lost like six anti-ecos, so it was basically our game," slaxz- said. "Now we'll just try to rest as much as we can to be sharp, just refresh and go."

Unfortunately Falcons is too old and washed and g2 will save their rep by somehow making it to playoffs, giving management the illusion that g2 is doing well

People were complaining before EPL that groups A and B are stacked But turns out teams like 3DMAX, TheMongolz and M80/BetBoom are going to playoffs from them. Very high level indeed...

And that's why partnerships are bad for the scene. Turns out "lower tiers" are not that much lower and deserve a chance and can even kick around some of the heavy hitters sometimes (could be just because those heavy hitters don't prepare for them enough, thinking they can win no matter what, while those teams grab that chance and study everything they can)

I agree, partnerships just weaken storylines and potential matches that could be much more hype than what we have.

Well done M80. As close as that game was in the end M80 are definitely the better team. They certainly have a lot to work on, but that's a good thing for such a new roster. #FREEm0NESY

Bro, that's a cope if I ever heard one. How is the coach the reason why someone isn't fragging. Hooxi makes the worst calls at the wrong times, has one and ten games where he goes positive. Nexa has no potential, at least Jks could pop off anytime.

there have been multiple confirmed errors on his part: insisting on veto the wrong map, denying timeouts etc. I don't care about g2 (though sad for monesy and dislike niko) but taz has been known for being slightly ignorant when it comes to the game, and while being just a spectator i can see it being a factor for their mishaps... that of course doesn't explain the lack of frags but him doing his job poorly is a factor for sure, if he is indeed a "meh" coach...

Two issues: - G2 is tired and doesn’t care about this tournament (0 crowd - low prestige) - or they only fight when they’re with their backs against the wall, like in the major, so could be another close call to the playoffs, with a 3/2 record. Whatever it is, G2 is losing against themselves a lot, the mental problems are their main enemy not the actual enemy. It’s kinda sad not even funny Teams like mongolz and m80 on the other hand, it’s a big tournament for both of them and they take this tournament 100% and 100% more serious than G2 does.

you can add: Change IGL Send Hunter to bahamas, and bring a new rifler Send Taz to Illuminar for at least 1 year, so he can learn how to coach Bring a new coach try to break the curse "no jks = no win"

You don’t make much sense. Okay which igl is better than hooxi? Taz, questionable if he’s good or bad coach because we don’t see his impact. Hunter was the best player yesterday, he’s stepping up G2 had problems with jks as well, this is not it. Maybe -nexa is a solution, but with a fresh player.

if G2 loses: 100% roster changes, hopefully m0NESY says goodbye, rebuild around chokola or something, unfixable anyways. if Falcons loses: zonic+snappi retirement unless zonic signed multi year deal, but snappi has to go no matter what

This is what happens when Niko believes he needs to stick with his family(his cousin Hunter who never shows up to play except on a blue moon like this series... You cannot put pressure on Monesy to be the difference between losing and winning. Hunter is always absent on the big matches and he has not been good after the transition to CS2... Niko will never get a Major if they keep the same team and expect Monesy to do 360 degree headshots with dualies in every match and carry the team
