What is up with the CPL?

On Monday The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL), put up a countdown timer on their website – But what could they possibly be counting down for?

Since the shutdown of the CPL years ago, in 2008 the CPL was renamed CPL, LLC after being bought out by the Abu Dhabi investment group based in the United Arab Emirates. In the front of the company was Scott Valencia, a man seen involved in past eSports projects like WSVG and CGS. Last year the CPL announced a event to take place in China, but not with the games we use to see. It was announced that the games to be played were fighting games, namely Street Fighter IV. Since then not much info about the CPL has been available.

The newly added countdown timer on the CPL website aims at the 1st of May, adding the hours and minutes, it seems like announcement will be in a US time zone. Similar on the CAL website, a countdown timer has been added, but with a timer set for 96days (on present day).

The CPL counting down, but for what?

Words spread quickly and the former CPL CEO Angel Munoz has already commented on this matter on facebook: "A couple of weeks ago the new owners asked me to forward to them my contacts at Valve, so they can renew the league's license to use their games. So I think we may get the old school games again."

For now, we can only wait till the 1st of May, where it is expected something in regards of the CPL will be announced.

Hopefully some good news for CS 1.6.

Yeah, CPL was almost legendary in the 1.6 Tournament. Great Games at the best time of eSports. Hopefully they will bring back CS 1.6 and gain as much prestige as they did back in the old days... But its still a long way back at the top of Events and I'm very excited about how they will be doing in the future. - For eSports it would be great to see ESWC and CPL back again!

one of the best plays in C.S 1.6 was made in one tournament from CPL, Spawn almost ninja defuse agains NIP. So this is like some great news????

thats unbelievable... I can also build up a gig event with promissed pricemoney of 100.000USD - All Top-Teams will attend and then, i'll sell the brandname to a new owner becasue I have no money and thats it...?! How's that possible?

honestly im not that excited about this yet. its a completely new company using the CPL brand name. there is nothing to suggest whether they are going to host the amazing tournaments of the past yet

I hope to see a CPL 2010 like was on 2005, and wish they do like some other tournaments (prizes to MVP, best awper, all-stars match or something else)to make it more fun.

Heh, all these people wanting CPL to come back, overlooking the lack of prize money paid out by the former owners. However, don't expect that money to come out as the new owners aren't obligated to pay out :\ It is what it is.

There is still a boycott on the CPL and the top teams(G7 Teams) will not go to their events unless it is lifted. CPL has work to do.

The CPL was NOT bought by an "arabic" group - there is no middle-eastern money, it is NOT based in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. That was all a lie. How do I know? I was there when the lie was discussed, decided on, and disseminated.
