Official: malbsMd joins G2

The ever-aggressive Guatemalan makes his first step up to a tier-one team after impressing under TeamOne and M80.

G2 have formally unveiled the acquisition of Mario "⁠malbsMd⁠" Samayoa to their Counter-Strike roster. The 21-year-old Guatemalan joins the team to replace Nemanja "⁠nexa⁠" Isaković, who was benched earlier this month.

malbsMd previously plied his trade for M80, whom he joined after impressing under TeamOne and where he continued his trajectory as an up-and-coming player with a 1.26 average rating following the switch to Counter-Strike 2.

Meet malbsMd, who is putting Guatemalan CS on the world map

His outing at ESL Pro League Season 19 in particular undoubtedly put him on G2's radar. They witnessed the Guatemalan rifler's prowess first-hand in Malta in April as malbsMd put up a 1.28 rating across two series against Nikola "⁠NiKo⁠" Kovač and company.

"Super excited for the opportunity of my life, can't still believe this happened but I'm more ready than ever to grind and become a better player and person than I was before," malbsMd said in a Tweet.

With the new addition, G2 are faced with a puzzle to solve when it comes to the team's standing roles.

As one of the most aggressive players in the world regardless of side (27% and 32% opening attempts on CT and T, respectively), malbsMd specializes in wildly different roles than nexa as a very passive anchor player.

He only shares the same positions with nexa on one map, Nuke, while on the other maps his hyper-active roles from M80 are in a direct clash with either Nemanja "⁠huNter-⁠" Kovač or NiKo depending on the map and side.

It's unclear at this point whether more changes are coming in the G2 camp to help solve that puzzle. As of now, their roster is the following:

Not a good idea. huNter is one of the most mobile players out there, you can't just make him sit in a bombsite. It'd be better to replace him entirely if that's their only option.

If huNter has been bad as a lurker/rotator he'll be even WORSE as an anchor. It's not as easy as just putting your worse-performing player in the worst roles.

Nexa is at worst T2 and Malbs at the moment is nothing else but a guy with good stats coming from T2/T3. CS has seen a lot of those, he's an unknown quantity. This is either the best move G2 could make or the worst.

hes got a point. most of the time m80 was farming na and importing an eu igl and awp helped them do that even more. you can send the worst eu player to na and theyre gonnna farm so the stats are def inflated but he could probably fit into this team very well and post 1.10

Solving G2 role puzzle: two duos are Niko + Hooxi and Hunter + malbs, hooxi and malbs are more aggressive, Niko and hunter are making use of that. monesy is everywhere. On T sides it would be nice to have more space making, many people say that Niko looks like he's feeling pressure to risk too much because of his current team (nexa can't find his W key until it's 10 seconds too late). During G2's "mini era", Kato & Cologne, they did exceptionally well on T sides and they were one of the few teams who did aggressive moves on both ends at the same time. It makes sense, if you can sustain the comms then you have the edge over poor CT's who are scrambling for proper rotations. I do not think it's bad pre-se for malbs to take Nexa's role on T, because malbs will play it way more aggressively and put pressure. Nexa was really struggling to make an impact because he baited too much, think malbs understands pressure better. But this kind of a change tells me that hunter is maybe stepping down to more supportive roles, otherwise G2 would get someone like Teses who would fit the gap properly if hunter was to keep his roles. I assume malbs gets most of those, while hunter did well here and there he has been struggling severely and that kind of output just isn't enough to be a winning team. Even with Niko and monesy, you need 3 good players having good tournament in order to have a chance at winning it. hunter hasn't been able to deliver that sadly, and I miss it, because he has been one of the best riflers in the past few years and one of the most consistent players out there. Malbs is a star player potential, his stats are mostly in NA so I expect a period of adaptation but I think he has potential.

I'm happy that G2 finally takes in a younger player, those are hungry especially when you get a chance to join a Tier 1 org, as long as skill is high then it's often a wise move when you have couple of older experienced players on it.
