G2 recover from map one defeat to smash FaZe

A G2 risk to ban Inferno and leave Mirage in the pool paid off in a 13-6 decider.

huNter-'s return to form continued with a server-topping 1.33 rating

The new G2 has continued its strong form by toppling FaZe 2-1 and securing a spot in Group C's final, putting them one series from Fall Final.

That was despite dropping Ancient 13-9, G2's pick and the map Nikola "NiKo" Kovač and company had a six-map winning streak on. By the time we moved to Nuke, however, G2's individuals had warmed up and the result was utter domination.

It was a statement series for the under-pressure Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač, who ended top of the board with a 1.33 rating. He now has a 1.26 rating for the event, his best average since the Copenhagen RMR and far above his 1.04 CS2 average.

"Since CS2 I'm really playing a lot, that's not an issue," huNter- said post-match. "When you make some changes, you want to show them that you're the player that everyone remembers and be a good example to the other players. As long as we are winning I don't care about my own performance."

Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa was the key man on Nuke, despite having four negative ratings in a row on the map for G2 and M80 as the Ramp anchor and Lobby lurker beforehand. The Guetamalan took over proceedings after a quad-kill on the MP9 in a confidence-filled display as he continues to prove both his talent and his versatility.

He ended the half 17-3, and shone as the sides switched too with a sensational Deagle double-entry into Ramp — the second fully blind, and requiring an inch-perfect 90 degree snap.

Map three was Mirage, G2's permaban under Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen, and eyebrows were raised on the desk after G2 chose Mirage over their usual pick of Inferno.

"We are practicing Mirage a lot and we are comfortable there," NiKo had said pre-game. "We haven't played it much as well, so it's good to have Mirage officials under our belt."

If it was intended as practice in a non-elimination match at a fairly low-stakes event, Mirage could not have gone better for G2 as they sat FaZe down by rushing to a 9-0 lead with eight rounds in a row that denied a bomb plant, and 13-6 win.

It does not mean, however, that G2 are turning away from Inferno, according to NiKo: "Inferno has been our best map, one of our best ever since I joined G2. Snax kind of has to get used to it, it's stupid not to play it when we're already really good at it."

FaZe now drop to the lower bracket against one of Cloud9 or Ninjas in Pyjamas as they look to combat their slide down the rankings.

Only David "frozen" Čerňanský put up any significant resistance on Nuke and Mirage, and after a poor Esports World Cup by their standards the FaZe team have a fight on their hands to return to the level required by their lofty standards.

A rematch against G2 is still possible, in a match that will decide which Group C team qualifies for Fall Final early.

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out having a 0.8 rating isn’t good. We are at a point where igls have to pull their own weight. This faze team is dead. Kick the dead weight and find a new igl.

of course it isn't, but his job isn't to frag. That's the other 4 players job. His job is to lead his team

Yeah and he isn’t doing a great job of that is he? Faze team is dead. 0.8 rating is the lowest I’ve seen in the t1 pro scene. He’s played 33 maps. The rest of his team is 1.03-1.13. 0.90-0.95 rating is understandable. But 0.81? Really. You should replace him.

my bad then, either way, Ropz' "bad" form can be traced back to when Frozen joined the team, so if it's roles, positions or something else, the two are probably connected.

You can’t blame frozen for ropz’s terrible performances especially when ropz didn’t give up a single position as I already told you above If frozen forced ropz to give up his roles and then ropz fell off yes but this is not the case

but can we just write it off as "ropz playing bad"? Because he came from really high highs at the start of cs2 up to the point where Frozen joined. That indeed does not mean there is a connection but it is possible. We don't know the inside or the team dynamic and how much it's different from before.

Probably not, maybe ropz was more comfortable with Twistzz in the team but then we are taking away accountability from ropz, at the end of the day no matter what everyone is ultimately responsible of their own ratings and performances And if you actually look at the games and spectate ropz you can just see there is something wrong with him, his aim and decision making is just not the same, he looks like a completely different player, as if all the confidence has been taken from him

Yeah it certainly looks and feels like he is not in the right mindset or something like that, what the cause of that is we will probably never fully find out. The team on paper should do fine but it does not, especially since in the start of CS2 when things went bad, it was Ropz who bailed them out many times. Currently is a liability who wins about as much heads-on fights as Karrigan.

It’s not about blame. The system doesn’t work, so one of the factors has to be changed. They’ve gone from being the best team in the world by a significant margin for a long period, to being top 10 at best, with one change. You know what that change is. Same reason the karrigan/ropz/frozen core didn’t work well in mouz, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Just bench frozen and recruit someone else quickly before it’s too late to get it back.

Playing in a 3v5 constantly gives u way more pressure, if u got a guy in the team that is flying. And ur igl can actually clutch, then u can play more freely and perform better.

Nothing surprising there, he’s the IGL. When you’re losing you make plays where you sacrifice yourself more and more to try and salvage some round wins.

I find it very surprising. 0.90-0.95 is fine. That’s normally been where he lands or high 0.8s. He’s on the verge of averaging almost a 0.7 the last 3 months.
