Tonya Welch talks of CPL scandal
Former CGS and WSVG chief Tonya Welch has unmasked the shady deals behind the purchase of the Cyberathlete Professional League.
In October 2008, the CPL announced plans to host new gaming events after allegedly being purchased by an investment group based in the United Arab Emirates.
Although such promises failed to materialise, the CPL has recently put up a timer on its official website, which indicates something will happen on May 1, with former owner Angel Munoz confirming meetings with the new owners.
Tonya Welch claims that Scott Valencia, the man in charge of the CPL Holding Group, engaged in talks with the previous CPL owners even though there was never any investment group to back up the deal.
"All of this led up the the first outright lie that was propagated regarding the purchase of the CPL. There was NEVER a middle-eastern investment group from Abu Dhabi behind the purchase of the CPL," she says.
"It was 100%, from beginning to end, a complete LIE, with every intention to deceive the owners of the CPL brand (at least, the other three partners were told the owners were included in this lie), the gamers, the potential investors, and the people at CGS."
She states that Valencia's plan was to build up the CPL brand, only to sell it to "the highest buyer in two years or less", and that the new CPL administration did everything within their power to keep the plot from being discovered, which included hiring a "press manager in the middle-east for a one-time statement" for the company to pass as middle-eastern.
Welch, who speaks of Valencia as a "compulsive liar", also accuses the new CPL owner of using CGS funds to pay for trips "to make business contacts we would later use for CPL".
The former CGS and WSVG employee says she has no ties to the current CPL administration since April 2009, and promises there is still a lot more to this story than what she tells in this blog, and she has vowed to continue updating it.
