m0NESY on breaking NAVI curse: "I was angry and hungry; I wanted to show we can't lose again"

The Russian AWPer helped G2 end their losing streak against NAVI.

G2 won their second trophy of the year in Copenhagen

Since adding Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa and Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski in the off-season, G2 have been a dangerous title contender. Despite this, the newly assembled team came short of a trophy, with their 0-9 record against Natus Vincere a big part of that.

In Copenhagen at the BLAST Fall Final, however, G2 finally snapped out of the losing streak and took a convincing 3-1 win in the grand final against Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen's troops to claim their second title of 2024.

After the win, tournament MVP Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov spoke to HLTV about winning the tournament, finally beating Natus Vincere, and his desire for trophies.

If you cannot see the SoundCloud embed above, listen to the interview here.

First of all, congrats on the win. A trophy and an MVP medal, how do you feel right now?

This is the best feeling in the world for me. Lifting the trophy and seeing my teammates happy.

You also stopped the NAVI streak. You were 0-9 coming into this, so is this win even more special because of that?

I was very hungry and angry before the game, seeing NAVI in the grand final again playing against us. I was angry and hungry just because we lost against them nine times, and I wanted to show that we can't do that, that we can't lose again. I was just very angry to win, to destroy them.

How important was it for you guys to take the first map? Given the record you had against them before, was that a huge confidence boost for you?

All the maps were very close. It was like 13-11, 11-13, and everything else was very close, even the rounds in the game. I think it's very important to win the first map because you get this extra confidence. When you make the game longer, and you win in the end, maybe they'll also be a little bit frustrated. But it's just good as some extra confidence.

Then on Mirage, you had a 9-1 lead. You probably thought that you'd almost won, but then you dropped the lead. How did that map feel for you guys?

Honestly, when we lost Mirage, I didn't know what to say. I didn't know what feelings I had because we were leading 9-1 on CT. Obviously, it's not a win yet. I didn't really focus on the trophy when we were leading 9-1, I was focusing on every round.

But for some reason, we didn't close some CT rounds we should have. I just know I was a bit empty after the map, trying to come back mentally to the next one. But I didn't stress, we're in good shape and form.

Your 1v2 clutch on Inferno won you the game. It felt like when you killed the final guy, you just let go of all of the emotions and let go of the keyboard. So how did that feel for you?

Honestly, after the last clutch, when I killed the guy planting the bomb, I wanted to write disconnect. I don't know why, I think just because everyone started screaming. But I had to defuse the bomb, and NiKo was looking at me and saying, 'Defuse, Ilya!' And I'm like, 'Okay, okay.'

When I clutched the previous round on B, 1v2 as well, I just closed my eyes because I needed to release this pressure and emotions to start the round again. Obviously, all the clutches gave me an extra boost and confidence, and I think it also gave a really good boost to the team. But yeah, I'm just trying my best.

This is your third MVP, the second one of this year. You're one of the players in the running for HLTV number one at the end of the year. Is that something that you want to achieve?

I don't count MVPs, I don't really focus on that. I just want to lift trophies. I see other teams lifting trophies, and when I see that, it gives me anger. I'm becoming angrier and hungrier because this year, we only won in Dallas. I'm very hungry to win trophies, everything else just counts as an extra bonus.

I feel like monesy is something that s1mple should have been. Incredibly skilled, but down to earth and humble guy, I honestly wish him all the success. Also, isnt it funny, how literally EVERY pro player say how they always prefer the team trophy instead of MVPs, but yet yappers on hltv still try to creates narratives as "donk skipping events to boost his rating" and shit like that. the player ranking is just something to talk endlessly on forums about, none of the players really care. Like, its nice for them, but thats it.

Even as a G2 fan, I can tell you that him getting MVP means way more than he expresses it there.. Of course the trophy means more, cause what's the MVP without the trophy, but ALL the players DO care about MVPs and rankings.. The same way you'd care about bonuses at your work, the same way those MVPs means something to them, they are their achievements afterall.. And the rankings, everyone cares if they come 5th or 25th this year, it's a part of the history and they want to be in it..

I wasnt trying to say he or anybody else doesnt care, but he doesnt proactively do any actions like saving if he can clutch to boost his rating or shit like that. Its just a byproduct of trying to reach the trophy, thats what i meant.

Yea, well it is obvious that the trophy is more important than the MVP medal itself, that's just the only right way of thinking.. :D What's the point of 20MVPs and 5 top5 placements if you got 0 trophies in your cabinet :D

sure. My whole point was, that the community cares A LOT more about these rankings than the players.

Yes, but you also stated: "the player ranking is just something to talk endlessly on forums about, none of the players really care. Like, its nice for them, but thats it." That is absolutely false, every single player that is close to being top20 will care about the rankings.. Of course if you ask a tier3 farmer if he cares about top20, they'll tell you that it is useless and so on, but if you get an honest talk from m0nesy, donk, zywoo, NiKo, jL, etc., they will care so much about the ranking, cause part of their job is to be consistent.. Not only they write history with the rankings, but it also goes to their "CVs".. s1mple is probably washed, but just cause of his "CV", he would be picked up by any team except for maybe few of them that have decent awpers already and not too much of budget to upgrade..

fair enough, good points. I probably worded it too strongly. Im just tired of the constant threads of who is gonna be top 1-5 all the time in the middle of the year.

Yea, I agree that those topics are useless, especially when the year isn't even close to an end, but it is just something they can yap about and maybe even "make a prediction" on and feel good about it if they can guess it mid season :)

bro of course players will say that they dont care so you guys think they are humble. Im sure monesy cares about the mvp and about being the number one player dont be dumb.

m0nesy did really well this tournament, but I'm mostly happy for NiKo. He didn't accept the transfer offer to Falcons, and stayed loyal to the org for as long as possible. Great to see him finally win an important tournament. Can't wait for the Major!

So they finally get rid of those absolutely underwhelming players, get proper substitutes (especially malbs) and now they are silently thinking about parting ways? And what is more important.... Niko to freaking Falcons? Gimme a break. Don't tell me they will offer him that much more compared to what G2 can. Not to mention Falcons is (and pretty much always was) kind of shit show. Another "we throw money somewhere and that's it" project for me. I just can't see this roster part ways after what they have been through. Now it clearly is championship title team and no, it does not mean they will now win everything, but yes, they are. And two points: 1) If m0nesy and niko will part their ways, they will regret it. One maybe more than another, but they will, mark my words. 2) It is SHAME how long G2 kept hooXi and nexa. One literally disappeared and second has crappy rating in T3 team. IT just shows how overrated these players were and how "but he has good vibes" or "but he is IGL" cannot be excuse at least for top teams that actually have money and options. I see much swifter changes in future (and contracts set up for that). Try someone, if he is not good enough, or does not fit, try another, repeat until it "clicks".

G2 is very lucky indeed to have a player of m0nesy's caliber. Unfortunately, this year they'll have to settle for that couple of mickey mouse cups barely won: G2 is not going to win anything for the rest of the year, forget Shangai Major.
