Community reacts to Train rework

Pro players and other community figures have expressed mixed feelings about the latest changes to the iconic map.

Valve released on Wednesday evening an update bringing back one of Counter-Strike's most famous maps, Train, which has been out of the competitive pool since May 2021, when it was replaced by Ancient.

While aesthetically still somewhat similar to how it looked in CS:GO, this new version of Train includes some important layout changes, like the removal of the ladder from pop dog, which has been replaced by a new hallway connecting it to B halls. Heaven, a key location on the A site, is also gone.

Train rework arrives in update

The Counter-Strike community has its eyes set on the RMRs and the upcoming Major, but many pro players have still taken the time to playtest the map. Astralis' Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller and MOUZ's Kamil "⁠siuhy⁠" Szkaradek were among the biggest critics of the recent map reworks.

Many players have pointed out that the map's hitboxes still need some work, and some have expressed concern that the new layout heavily favors the Terrorists. Still, there are those who seem excited about the new map, like Dan "⁠apEX⁠" Madesclaire. "It's decided," the Vitality captain wrote. "Pick Train."

With pro opinions being so far apart from each other, do they even? We can all agree that the changes are big and it's not the same map. If we give it a chance it could be better, we can clearly see the logic behind the changes on this one. Give it a chance

+1 We also need to keep in mind that CS has a competitor now: Valorant. The days of being an uncontested best 5v5 tactical shooter are over. In order to bring the next generation into CS updates and reworks are required. Part of this is because the next generation doesn't have the nostalgia or patience for the old stuff. Reworks/updated visuals are crucial to pretty much any game trying to remain relevant (unless it's TF2 because that game will never die, the player base keeps growing over there which is wild! Check steamdb.info for that one) Valorant appears to have more steady growth (at least in event viewership) than CS right now, if CS were to stop updating and reworking maps Valorant would absolutely become uncontested no.1.

New train looks superior in almost every way compared to the old train. I would've disliked them bringing old train without changes, as I always felt it was kind of wack as a map. But this new one actually looks cool and that it would play well. Regards

can't tell if I like it yet but honestly it feels like a valorant map :( just soooooo much empty open space specifically on the bombsites. I can appreciate them simplifying the layout but feels like they went a bit too far this time

More than half of those have smaller areas for sites and have way more going on than Train. Not even comparable. This is more like Cobble A site after the update, useless wide open space everywhere.

I like the vibe and somber graphics but they have made some crazy layout changes. Why remove Thera? It was great especially in contrast to this new dark Train. We or at least I need more new maps, not old reworked into oblivion.

i mean as someone whose main go to map the old train was it kinda hurts to have it that different because for me the train before was perfect having a lot of chances to create plays... just the many ways to play main as a T... having the Z bang, going on the wood to peek above the trains while still needing to have an eye on ivy, having the chance of standing behind the first train outside main to hold ebox and ladder pushes, holding backsite/stopper or just ivy itself gave you so much chances of changing ur playstyle at 1 single position and the new main doesnt really give you that many opportunities... or as ct having the chance of playing different things from back6/ivy... going on top of the wagon, peek right side for main entries. hold left between the trains or the ladder pushers, support ur ivy player or gamble with an awp to hold both angles again just from one position... old train felt like if youre good individually you can be the difference maker if you know what youre doing... thats somehow missing for me but after i played 3 games in a row today on it it was still fun and stuff so i will still love the map i guess but slightly less than before

Many people trash talking about the old train it was very CT side, this one will be very T side!! So the remake they have done looks really bad because of that … just an opinion, change just to refresh things but don’t do things with brain and just do only to silence the player is not the smart way. And don’t forget, we have anubis that is full T side too so don’t cry about hold train or new train, things are the same, I just dont understand why they give us the map with a poor work done. But like I said before, it’s just an opinion. GG everybody!

This train update has to be one of the biggest downgrades I've seen in gaming since a very long time. Yes the performance is better and it feels smoother but I really feel like they got rid of every aspect that made train unique and it's own map. So many small details and so much history feels abandoned, feels and looks more like a Valorant to me rather than an old historic map. Edit: Feels more like an brand new map rather than a train remake to me, very sad to see.

Map itself is pretty fine, although I think the back part of A should be more open like before. Worst part of it was the FPS-drops.

siuhy is a dumbass. Does he realise it's 2024 so many games are going to be looking more realistic. He's complaining about visuals and details when that's what maps should start having now. The realism in maps is what the game should have. He's 22 and is talking like he's been playing since 1.6

I had the same feeling reading siuhy’s comment but i don’t really think he is dumb, at least just stop calling people names. Just that his mind is fighting more than others’ when it comes to changes more than others. Users tend to adopt changes a little bit more hard when it comes to festures/maps/things they previously loved. Its normal. But yeah he does speak like he used to grind 24/7 low poly maps in cs 1.6… Hope teams could adapt to the new dynamics and valve answering with possible new necessarily balance updates for this map. They did it before with fixing ancient after launch.

It feels like a fun map, though it requires balancing changes for timings, etc. I wish they would make it less depressing; its super dark at the moment imo

Especially maps set in deserts. Like it was fine when we had just Mirage and Anubis, but it's a bit too sandy now that we have Dust 2 as well, lacks diversity visually Edit: come to think of it, would love some more snow. We never had a active duty snow map (I think)
