Cache Counter-Strike 2 remake released on workshop

The much-loved Chernobyl-inspired level has been overhauled with new visuals for CS2.

The Counter-Strike 2 remake of Cache has been released on the Steam workshop, one of the map's original designers, Shawn "FMPONE" Snelling, has announced.

It is a complete visual overhaul of the version released in late 2019 by FMPONE and the map's original creator, Salvatore "Volcano" Garozzo, which was added to casual gamemodes in CS:GO but never returned to the active duty competitive rotation.

The first CS:GO version of the map was in the active duty pool from June 2014 until March 2019, when it was replaced by Vertigo. It remains the only community-owned map to have featured in the active duty competitive rotation.

The new release features only a few immediately apparent gameplay changes, doing away with the ladder and scaffolding in Z that was added in the 2019 remake and adding the ability to self-boost on the boxes at the back of Checkers.

"Cache is fair and balanced, so changes come with more risk than reward for the most part," FMPONE said about the differences when contacted by HLTV.

There has been overwhelming community support from pros and fans alike for Cache to return to the competitive rotation ever since FMPONE first teased the remake in February 2024.

However, whether that will come to fruition remains a mystery. In 2022, Valve purchased Anubis from its creators and assumed full ownership before adding it to the pool. When asked about how this approach from Valve might affect the future of Cache, FMPONE was elusive.

"We will see how the community reaction informs those decisions," he said.
