Liquid part ways with mithR

The Dane's nine-month stint with Liquid has come to an end.

Liquid have announced that Torbjørn "⁠mithR⁠" Nyborg is stepping down as head coach. Current analyst Jay "DeMars DeRover" Li will serve as interim head coach whilst Liquid "explore all coaching options."

The news comes soon after HLTV reported that Liquid were in negotiations to bring Kamil "⁠siuhy⁠" Szkaradek into the fold as IGL.

"I will remember the fall season of 2024 forever," mithR said reflecting on his time in Liquid in a statement posted to X. "Never have I felt more welcome, valued, trusted, confident or motivated in a team.

"2025 did not go as we wanted it to. I am incredibly disappointed and sad that it turned out this way, but I will reflect and learn from this[...] At the end of the day I believe this is the best decision for both parties."

mithR joined Liquid mid-way through 2024 as the team sought to pick up the pieces after the iteration of the roster featuring Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller, Felipe "⁠skullz⁠" Medeiros and Wilton "⁠zews⁠" Prado fell apart.

The Dane was soon joined by Justin "⁠jks⁠" Savage and Roland "⁠ultimate⁠" Tomkowiak, with Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken taking up the IGL mantle. As part of their announcement of his signing Liquid pointed to mithR's record of "developing IGLs," a skill that was supposed to serve him well with Twistzz transitioning to the role.

Liquid achieved little of note with mithR at the helm, often missing out on the playoffs of Big Events and never finishing higher than 5-6th. Their most notable results came in ESL Pro League, where they came 5-8th in seasons 20 and 21, and Perfect World Shanghai Major, where they also came 5-8th.

It would also seem that mithR's quest to aid Twistzz in his transition to IGL failed as the Canadian is set to give up the role to siuhy, should siuhy sign for Liquid in the near future as expected.

According to a recent report by Dust2.dk, economic factors may have influenced Liquid's decision. The article says sources told Dust2.dk "that Liquid is currently operating with a reduced financial framework," and that this fact "had a significant influence on the decision-making process."
