ESL confirms Grand Slam will continue after Season 5, Intel no longer part of initiative

The tournament organizer told HLTV that the Grand Slam was not included in its recent partnership renewal with Intel.

IEM Katowice was the last time ESL referred to the race as the Intel Grand Slam

ESL will continue to operate its Grand Slam past the current season despite Intel no longer being a part of the initiative, the tournament organizer confirmed in a statement to HLTV.

"Seven years ago, Intel helped us start the Grand Slam," ESL said. "Now, beginning with ESL Pro League Season 21, it will continue as the ESL Grand Slam.

"Should the running fifth season conclude, we will continue to operate the ESL Grand Slam."

The update comes 11 days after the conclusion of ESL Pro League Season 21, where graphics shown on stream and subsequently posted on social media referred to the $1,000,000 race as the "ESL Grand Slam" instead of the "Intel Grand Slam" name used since its creation in June 2017.

The silent name change prompted HLTV and Dust2.us to reach out for clarification on Intel's involvement and whether the Grand Slam would continue past Season 5. However, ESL's initial statement failed to provide suitable answers to either inquiry.

ESL and Intel announced a "multi-year renewal of their long-standing partnership" ahead of IEM Katowice in February, with the accompanying press release still referring to the race as the "$1 million Intel Grand Slam V."

Graphics at IEM Katowice also kept the old name scheme, but ESL has since updated numerous references, including on their website, to remove Intel's branding from the current season.

"The partnership renewal with Intel was announced ahead of Intel Extreme Masters Katowice (before the renewal came into effect)," ESL's second statement clarified.

"While it does not include this specific initiative in our Counter-Strike portfolio, we’re thankful for Intel’s continued long-term commitment to us and to Counter-Strike overall."

ESL did not clarify the reason why Intel is not a part of the initiative after the renewal. Among the possible reasons are the American manufacturer scaling back its advertising budget amidst declining stock value (down 46% in the last 12 months and 55% over five years) and the increase in competition with more tournament organizers entering the Counter-Strike circuit.

AMD should sponsor HLTV. Every PC build thread here either includes a X3D gaming CPU or comments telling the OP to use one.

I agree. I don't intend to suggest that HLTV is an AMD marketing tool, but rather that HLTV does a very good job at educating gamers about the strengths of their products, so they should give HLTV some thanks. Also, it would look nicer than the CSGOEmpire ad on my screen right now...

Probably never - if AMD would want to move into esport sponsorship, they would do it already.. Remember in the past they actually tried to sponsor some people and events - for example s1mple was their ambassador etc and they disappeared fast from esport scene, like after 2-4 months

crazy but deserved. They abused their market power and invested very little money into new techniques. And AMD owned them in 5 years twice, first with ryzen second with 3dx... But customer market the lower one business partner also found out that AMD gives you more for the money...

It feels weird to have a grand slam for only a specific TO's events, ngl. In my mind, the actual grand slam of CS2 (divorced from financial rewards) amounts to being the simultaneous reigning champion of Katowice, Cologne and the latest major.

katowice, cologne and major(or maybe two i guess) feels more like a golden road(name from league) type of achievement more than a "grand slam".

Then the league community or riot just made their own name instead of using this just to be cool. Good to know. Grand Slam it is then.

Called it "Triple Crown" or something like that. Even thought that might've came from another sport.

Dunno about other sports, but the Triple Crown I know is in Supercars. Depending on the weekend format that year, either win all 3 races or both races and Sunday pole at Hidden Valley. Only ever been done once in the 25-ish years it's been on offer. They do try to say there's 2 winners, but that was just because they diluted it to the round points leader the year after Scott McLaughlin did it since they couldn't handle how much he dominated when he was with DJR. Nobody really counts that one though.

Intel's been getting absolutely slammed in terms of revenue for a while now. Their node processes, which they dumped tons of money into, are notably behind TSMC and their desktop and workstation processors are getting pummeled by AMD. They also just got rid of their CEO and brought in a new one (and the 2 before that lost them a lot of market share due to inefficient visions for future expansion). They aren't the company they were 10 years ago.

Intel's big advantage over the competition was that they were producing their own CPU's, now that they've begun to buy wafers off of TSMC their doom was spelled out and the disappointing launch sealed the deal. I don't even know what all these fabs they have even do anymore, I actually worked in one of them as a contractor and the equipment was old as fuck and the plans to open newer fabs were way late

From what I understand of the situation was that TSMC simply outpaced Intel, but I'm sure it's considerably more complicated than that. But, yeah, from everything I've read your assessment seems pretty accurate. I no longer have friends working in that space so I can't speak to where Intel actually stands, but it seems relatively dire if the reporting on the company is at all accurate.

no they are not going bankrupt - people are over exaturating some things if we want to be fair - around 25 years ago Intel was in much much MUCH worse time than it is now - and somehow they still went above AMD then (and AMD then was like the #1 player)

My girlfriend works at Intel, @Nohte. They're shaking down the workforce right now, cutting positions left and right, taking away benefits, cutting programs and lot of in-office niceties. Intel lost a lot of money the last couple of years - their CEO getting forced out this year was not a coincidence. GF has told me some really concerning things, and tbh, their operations carry a similar undertone to Enron, or Tyco International ca 2000.

people who worked with intel tell this: you had to dance to their tune everytime. they were arrogant and the opertional side of business was BLOATED and inflexible. (intel called a meeting with my manager and some of their own side because i sent out emails to PPL intel put into the CC) good luck get anything you need to get done.

Misspending for sure - they straight up lost something like $8 billion that they intended to bolster their chipset R&D and production. I spent some time looking at their top-down reporting structure and the different departments there - a lot of lavish management positions with a lot of perks not extended. Old CEO was eating out of JD Vance's hand for the CHIPS act, was part of pushing this "Trump is good for the nation" narrative; they absolutely will not deliver.
