PGL announce opening matchups for Bucharest

Tier-one CS returns to Romania for a studio LAN.

The MongolZ are the highest-ranked team by VRS in attendance

PGL has announced the first round of matchups for PGL Bucharest 2025, a 16-team tournament set to go down April 6-13.

The teams in attendance will play out a Swiss system group stage, with the top eight sides proceeding to a single-elimination playoff bracket. The event will run a dual-stream setup, with plenty of CS to be played across the group stage.

The event will serve as an excellent chance for teams beyond the top four to grab some silverware, as Spirit, Vitality, Natus Vincere and MOUZ will not be in attendance. Teams like The MongolZ, Eternal Fire, FaZe and G2 will all fancy their chances amongst a slightly weaker field.

The highlight matchup of the opening round is FaZe vs. Astralis, pitting together the two sides that contested the third place decider match at PGL Cluj-Napoca, in which Astralis came out on top after losing a barnburner multi-overtime opener on Mirage. FaZe have since had revenge, however, taking a comfortable 2-0 win during BLAST Open Lisbon.

Also of note is the game between The MongolZ and 3DMAX, who developed an interesting rivalry over the back half of 2024 after 3DMAX triumphed over the Mongolians in the final of Skyesports Championship. The matchup has since turned in favour of The MongolZ, a sign of the squad's growing stature in recent times.

Supposedly a short term loan until the end of the major, replacing jks. Mouz will hold the contract so that they can shop him around and see if they can get any better offers after that.

That only mattered for Blast Rivals, not PGL. But yeah, top rank Asia team now is RA since Mongolz are top 4 VRS anyway.

Yeah i was talking about that, though i think ra is not eligible for wildcard invite so based on the rules it seems its just gonna be a vrs invite replacement.

So pgl went back to #1 vs #9, #2 vs #10 seed, etc despite doing classic Swiss seeding last event

better seeding: less chances of best teams meeting more than once and all the top 8 teams in the playoffs + it's how the major employs the seeding...

A better seeding was at ESL Pro League 21

The major had the same quality seeding.

No, ESL 21 had teams rank each other, then the strongest played against the weakest and the ranking of teams changed during the event based on their results. While Majors have Swiss BO1s + Buchholz + different first match seeding (1v9; 2v8…, 10v16; 11v15 etc.)

so the seeding is 1v9th seed and 2vs10 after the first matchup, the highest seed of the 1-0 group will face the 5th seed since there are are 8 teams in 1-0 zone. same in the 0-1 zone. it will continue on like this until the playoffs teams are determined.

Without top teams it seems like a very interesting tournament. There is many teams who may lift the trophy and of course it is nice to finally see polish team on LAN.
