ESL cut $130,000 for IEM5

Electronic Sports League have announced the total prize purse of $400,000 for Intel Extreme Masters season 5, which is a cut of $130,000 compared to season 4.

The unveiling of information for IEM5 continues as the fourth board was unveiled today. On the board it is written "In total $400,000" which is assumed to be the total prize purse for the fifth season. ESL has on the previous boards announced that the fifth season will consist of 6 events, with Counter-Strike 1.6 and Quake Live revealed as Main Titles and an event in New York City (American Championship Finals).

Season five cheques to be small?

The $400,000 prize purse is in fact almost half of what the third season had, which was a total of $750,000 handed out in three games. The fourth season had a total prize purse of $530,000, which was a $220,000 cut compared to season three. This will most likely make people question whether there are financial problems going on within ESL as a whole, or only for IEM5.

ESL has also been criticized by teams for taking a very long time to pay out the prize money. Prize money from IEM4 European Championship Finals and World Finals is still due to be paid out, HLTV.org has learned.

Just a financial question. Sponsors give money for their names to be shown around, as an advertising campaign.. People pay tickets to go to these arenas, where sponsors put their products in hopes of buyers. Tickets I'm guessing goes to prizes... How much would E-sport companies make out of all this? If so much is spent on prizes, then I'm guessing the reason for sponsor problems and delay in paying prizes is because of lack of people going to arenas.. Which I'm guessing is the reason in lowering prizes?

I forgot my important question lol...Do they make money from sponsors or from tickets? Cause i think the sponsors pay the prize money in total.

I dont think they get that much from tickets. Main income is from sponsors, and in some tournaments the fee you need to pay to enter the tournament. The problem is that many esports companys tend to waste more then they can,if you win 100000 you cant promise a prize of 180000 if you get what i mean. ESL aswell gets some money from memberships and TV. Still i think last IEM featured 3 games instead of two, 400000$ is a lot of money for 2 games man...

True, TV would be a huge step and a huge money boost to E-sports. That's a hard step to take though.

This is all about sponsors. If the sponsors feel they haven't made that much money with them then they can cut down on money anytime they want... but still there is a 5th season and this is a lot of money. Good job.
