Danny "fRoD" Montaner joined Evil Geniuses in December 2008 after being a part of compLexity since mid-2004, including the time spent playing CS:Source in CGS. Upon his return to 1.6 he quickly got his form back, even though EG wasn't overly successful in 2009, winning only GameGune Mexico and placing 3rd at Arbalet Cup Europe at the very end of the year. In 2010 the team progressed along with Montaner, winning a more prestigious international tournament, MSI BEAT IT, and more importantly, showing that they can beat almost any top team at a given day.

A promising beginning

The first international tournament for the American team was to be IEM4 World Championship in Hannover. They had a brilliant start when they placed first in their group after defeating teams like fnatic, mTw and Frag eXecutors. However, they didn't continue in the same manner as they were later beaten by Na`Vi in the semi-final and then by SK in the 3rd place decider. Montaner overall had an average tournament, with some ups and downs, recording a 1.01 rating. His brightest moment was surely his performance against fnatic when he recorded a 29-18 score, while outawping his opponents 20-1. He also finished as the events second most successful awper with 72 kills (0.27 per round).

He showed during IEM4 World that his AWP will be on fire this year

A short while after Hannover, Evil Geniuses won a title in their domestic competition, ESEA-Invite Season 5, while Montaner was their best player at the LAN finals of the tournament.

Next major tournament for EG was Arbalet Cup Europe, which turned out to be their least successful one of the year, as they didn't make it past the first group stage. Although, some controversy surrounded their group which saw WeMade FOX and UNiTED go through. They did however have a bright spot in the tournament, managing to defeat SK Gaming in a match that could have potentially brought them to the next stage, while Montaner was the best rated player of that encounter.

In July, they attended ESWC in Paris, France where this time they managed to make it to the second group stage, but then they were easily dealt with by mTw and Frag eXecutors. Montaner however had a very good tournament individually, as he was rated above 1.00 in 4 of 5 matches (1.17 overall rating), while his standout performance was against Ukrainian team PinG when he recorded a 38-19 score.

Next up were another LAN Finals of ESEA-Invite in Dallas, this time for season 6, as Evil Geniuses managed to defend their title in North America and Montaner had a solid tournament with a 1.14 rating.

Fulfilling the potential

Over the next few days, Arbalet Cup Dallas was held at the same venue as Evil Geniuses managed to achieve their biggest success until that point in the year, finishing at 3rd place only behind Na`Vi and mousesports. Montaner himself had a very successful showing (1.22 rating, 7th best at the event), especially excelling in their quarter-final match against BURNING when he recorded an astonishing 2.02 rating over the two maps, practically singlehandedly defeating the French. He also played great in each map of their 3rd place decider versus H2k. But most importantly, he was named the Best AWP of the tournament, recording a total of 100 kills with the big green (0.26 per round).

Montaner with his trophy for Best AWP of Arbalet Dallas

Evil Geniuses traveled to Brazil next, to attend WCG Pan-American Championship where they placed 2nd behind FireGamers, although while using a stand-in instead of their in-game leader Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen. Montaner was the event's second best rated player with an excellent 1.34 rating while putting up great resistance in the final map of the tournament (37-24 personal score) which his team lost in double overtime.

MSI BEAT IT tournament in China followed, where EG showed their best form of the year, which culminated with their victory over fnatic in the final as they took the 1st place. Montaner had a very good tournament individually recording a 1.12 rating, while he was also the best awper by far with 0.26 kills per round. He played particularly well in the final against fnatic, where he was the top rated player over the 3 maps with a 1.35 rating, especially great in the last map when he recorded a 30-12 score while outawping the Swedes 18-0.

Montaner was the key man in the final of MSI BEAT IT

Prior to their next international appearance, which was going to be in Los Angeles at the World Cyber Games, Evil Geniuses made a lineup change, bringing in Derek "dboorN" Boorn instead of Ediz "goodfornothing" Basol. They were also unable to use their in-game leader Kovanen once again due to his nationality. But that didn't stop them from making it through the group of death which contained Lions and F2F, although they were later stopped in quarter-final by eventual finalists mTw. Montaner did not excel at this tournament, recording only a 0.96 rating, as well as his lowest awpKPR of the year (0.16).

Montaner picked his form up only a week later at the IEM5 American Champioship Finals, by being the top rated player of the event with his personal best rating of the year, 1.43. Even though EG were again defeated by the Brazilians in the final, this time under the name of Montaner's ex-team compLexity, they managed to qualify for the IEM5 World Championship in March 2011.

In their last international appearance of the year, the American team attended WEM where they finished as 5th-6th. Montaner had his worst rating of the year, 0.81 overall from their 3 matches, but he once again showed his best against Swedish powerhouse fnatic when he outawped them 24-1 in a triple-overtime encounter which EG managed to win. That match also brought what was probably his highlight round of the year:

Montaner's amazing 4 kills with the awp against fnatic in WEM

At the end of November, EG defended their ESEA-Invite title once again, proving their dominance in the North American scene with 3 championships in a row, while Montaner had a solid 1.09 rating.

Still one of the best AWPers in the world

Montaner had a total of 392 kills with the awp at major international tournaments, which was 5th most of all players. Looking at the average he was even better as 4th best in the world with a 0.25 awpKPR. Another area where he impressed was first kills of a round where he was the 7th most successful overall looking at the difference of entry kills and deaths per round.

His major achievements include winning MSI BEAT IT and placing 3rd at Arbalet Dallas, along with 3 domestic titles and two second places at American-based events. Individually, he was awarded the best AWP at Arbalet Dallas and was also unofficially the best AWP at MSI BEAT IT, meaning he was crucial in both of his team's major successes. All those things make him a worthy candidate for our Top 20 list, although he had some bad performances as well, which puts him at the 14th position.

It might also be interesting to note that Montaner was the 4th best rated player on de_train, which when coupled with his teammate Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert (2nd best rated) helps to make Evil Geniuses one of the strongest teams in the world on that map.

Another interesting fact from Montaner's 2010 campaign might be his performance in matches against fnatic which seem to make him especially motivated. While his team defeated the Swedes in all 3 of their clashes during the year (4-1 in map-wins), Montaner had an astonishing 80 kills with the awp and was only killed by it 3 times, having an overall rating of 1.32 in those matches.

So? Even thought they put a Screen where they shouldn't, what fr0d did it's not correct. If someone gives you some undeserved advantage you shouldn't accept and try to win the right way.

Alright, everyone listen. EG was playing fnatic, a team that was without a doubt one of the top 3 teams in the world during the time that WEM took place. Their deciding match was brought into DOUBLE OVERTIME, in the semi(?)finals of the event. Regardless of the material prizes at stake, I think we can all agree that something that is sought after at these events is prestige. With all of this in mind, is anyone honestly surprised that frod made a split second decision to glance at the ENORMOUS screen placed in front of him, showing the POV of the last enemy alive, in the round that would win them the match? Yes, it was wrong of him, but to say that no one else has ever manipulated the game or the tournament layout to their advantage before him is lying through their teeth. (Remember when WMF defused through the box? I didn't see anyone losing all of their respect for WMF after that, seeing as how they were showered with praise after they won WEM) Anyway, you can have your opinions, but I personally believe that to lose all respect for someone who's been around since the very beginning of competitive counter-strike because he made one illegal move 7-8 years into his career is complete shit.

Well, I guess as a player, people might make mistakes. But trying to justify that move just disgust me. He cheated to win the round and he did win. The refrees didnt catch them so they secured the win. But, the move he did was cheating the rule which will of course result losing respect as a player.

Yeah termi did illegal defuse, I never was a pretty fan of WMF anyway LOL, he did really bad, same as frod but the difference is that i did have respect for froD. I know WMF actually have pretty good strats but I just dont like their style that much. termi was really focused on the game at that moment and decided to do that defuse(bad decision) froD in the other hand, DIED and immediately looked up to the screen and started ghosting, I mean he was already DEAD he can think Clearly. I would lose respect for someone who cheats bad show me proofs C:

I totally agree with you, but please consider how big the prize money was. I don't try to justify the move or anything, just considering how much they could earn with that it's somewhat natural to do everything in your power to ensure the money. Again, I understand your point, ghosting is so unsportsmanlike. Performancewise id say it's fair to place him 14th on the list, he's been fantastic recently. I never really liked american teams for their attitude, not even the real crowd favourite complexity, but i agree that frod did some crazy shit with awp this year. :)

I just tried to reveal that this "slip" doesn't make him worse as a player. His action was disgusting, no doubt... (I still believe most of the whiners here would have done exactly the same. Nowadays players have forgotten a very important notion. It's called fairplay.)

If anyone has manipulated anyhing during a tournament and got caught they wouldn't be respected anymore. Saying everyone would have done the same thing is just dumb, hes a cheater and always will be a cheater he doesn't deserve this at all. I am very sad to see Americans are standing up for him.

frod was not cheating for his team.it was just that he had eaten a lot of chilly burgers before the match and as the match went into overtime...the pressure became overwhelming and that forced him to do that.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but if you read the article, you'll realize there's a part saying "Another interesting fact from Montaner's 2010 campaign might be his performance in matches against fnatic which seem to make him especially motivated. While his team defeated the Swedes in all 3 of their clashes during the year (4-1 in map-wins), Montaner had an astonishing 80 kills with the awp and was only killed by it 3 times, having an overall rating of 1.32 in those matches." wich means, he managed to awp 80 players and only get killed 3 times by DSN's awp. I do agree that this year frod pulled a better performance than DSN.

What you and everyone is trying to do is have YOUR dream players get listed in the order you desire...which obviously varies from person to person. This is ONE OF THE WAYS of doing it fairly. You may not agree to it but it is certainly more objective than you saying roman>fr0d on your own assessment alone.

Good player, but dislike the person due to his attitude he's had during and after interviews especially during the EG vs coL era. Doesn't hurt to keep a smile on your face and answer questions cleanly without putting blame on other people all the time.

stats can be deceiving indeed. perhaps many of the frags are done while the other team is on an eco or the frags done are not very important. there's a couple of examples. i'm not saying that he's been bad, cuz he hasn't been, but i (and many others) think other players has shone more. if it weren't all on statistics, a player like Zeus would be top10.

i guess the most objective way to do it is by stats. but, for instance, leadership can't be measured in stats which means it all comes down to how good you aim is and what kind of positions your ingame-leader have put you in. some players perhaps gets to hold a very defensive position on an anti-eco round while someone else is more offensive and get all the frags. does the defensive player get +5 frags for holding that position? no. does he get bonusfrags for stepping up in much more vital rounds than the anti-eco? no. you see, there are a lot of flaws of the statistics system, but yes, perhaps it's the best way of creating a ranking. i would rather read a ranking based on someone's opinion though, and by that i mean someone who watch a ton of games and cover events.

It's the same thing when some soccer player scores a goal with his hand, and refree doesn't see that,so the goal is "regular". And that player is a cheater for sure, but 99% of ppl would do that to take an advantage in certain situations if it's possible, same like frod did. I'd blame organisators for making that mistake,it would be the same if a director of some club put a naked girl in front of you,and say "Don't look at her tits,it's not allowed." Anyway,i don't support the thing he did,but it's a normal thing in human's nature,to have a need to win,and take advantage of whatever you can.

99%? If you're a douchebag like he is, it doesn't mean that everybody is. I don't see 20 football players handballing every match.

I wish i could stamp the word STATS on almost all of ur monitors....how can u possibly be overrated when they are basing ur rank on ur stats...stats tell u exactly what u have done during the year, theres no opinions involved, they are straight up facts that cannot be altered...he did what he did, and thats why hes ranked where hes ranked. U cant take that from him, bc there is factual evidence on paper that tells u where he ranks among players, ur opinion means nothing. so I -1 u

one of the biggest overated players this year. Yes he was good with coL 2005/2006 but now let me tell you that he don't have any chance against AWPers of big caliber like markeloff trace Delpan Savage starix karrigan SIXER solo FalleN.

I am not trying to defend Delpan at all. But hate all kind of cheat, I really don't care if you just cheated a little. Cheat is cheat and I am not able to have any respect for a player that have cheated in any way. If it was a bug mistake or something, fine. But if you cheat on purpose it is another thing...

I think that what you call "cheat" of what frod did its non sense... He didn't cheat, the organization put a big screen with the POV of fnatic... If fnatic blame someone should blame the org... And its not the first time that's happens with fnatic... awkward... But im understand your point of view m8

Yeah, the organisation made a mistake as well. I really don't understand why they would put the big screen there. What he did wasnt anywhere near how bad it is to use cheats like wallhack/aimbot etc. Still, it is cheat and it is unfair they got away with it just because the organisation have decided that you have to report it a short time after the match. People actually have to spot the cheat before they can report it...
