HLTV.org no more?

Okay here is the deal, only one year after our last sponsor cancelled their deal with us, we are once again in the same situation, and after the 1st of March we once again stand without a head sponsor, 8 machines (some 50GHz), and half a gigabit of bandwidth short. We cannot go into further detail on our sponsorship with Boomtown, or why it will cease soon, at this time, so please do not ask.

Last year many suggested doing donations, but getting the new hardware alone will cost in the range of 10.000~15.000 Euro, and to be honest we do not believe raising that kind of money is possible through donations, so while we appreciate the desire to donate, we are not going to offer the option.

This means that we are now again looking for a sponsor, but unlike last year the stakes are now higher, the amount of visitors on our site, the demand for HLTV and the increase in spectators the last year has been enormous, e.g. our website alone consumes more than half a Terabyte of bandwidth every month, that is more than 6 Terabytes every year.

One thing is however worth noticing, what we are not willing to do is take a step backwards, we do not want to become smaller, host less HLTVs, less demos, or less features on our site. This leaves us in the situation where a possible new head sponsor would have to make quite an investment in us, and if no one is willing to do so, I am sorry to inform you that HLTV.org will cease to exist after the 1st of March 2006. We are of course again very sad that it had to come to this, and if you think we are starting to sound like a broken record, then trust us when we say that we are very frustrated with how this is going ourselves. We do however still believe firmly in providing free HLTV for everyone, and will do our outmost to keep doing this, because at the end of the day having fun is what it is all about, we have always felt that way, and will till the bitter end.

Anyone interested in sponsoring HLTV.org is welcome to email me at [email protected], I will then do my best to provide you with detailed statistics of events, day to day operations, and everything else that may be on your mind.

On a closing note we would like to thank Boomtown for the partnership the last year, we appreciate the push in the right direction, and are sad that we have to go alone from here.

Once again:

‘Cya, I hope..’

Nomad - on the behalf of the HLTV.org crew.

So, from what i can figure out, the problem is that TDC is changing ownership and therefore might stop even boomtown, but what do i know, i've only been using hltv.org a little the past year, bearly followed the scene at all, but now i'm into cs again and i know hltv.org and i know what you do for the scene, major chrash if you were forced to close :( i hope and think you'll find a sponsor, try that swedish bredbandbolag or what it was called. Best wishes from me:)

Maby things will change for hltv.org sponsor wise, in the near future. It's obvious that something has to change and be more stabil. Sponsors come and go. If HLTV.org need help, they'll get it. That's the way it is, I think.

you should really consider donation. dont be ignorant, the community is very powerfull. and everyone loves watching a good game with a good hltv provided by you. if you consider donation, im 80% sure you will raise the money for the hardware. And if that isnt enough, when you have the servers you will need to pay for the connection etc. well just take a look at SK, they introduced banners. even if they have money, you can never have enough money. you will get the money for the servers from donations, and keep recieving money for the connection from advertisment. good luck and please take in consideration my word. Do not underestimate the community !

We are certainly not, but see it like this: We start donations and collect 80% of the needed money, but we are unable to get the last 20%, then what do we do? Taking the money and still shutting down would be a huge slap in the face for the whole community, and paying back all the money would be a huge pain in the ass, so all in all it is to protect the community that we do not ask for donations, simply to avoid the potential scandal..

have you ever used your servers at 100% ? have you ever ecountered a situation where you needed more then you had from boomtown ? if you didnt then maybe you could cut down. dont try to understand something im not saing, im just saing to take a moment, whell maybe a large moment, and really really think about it, think about the thing you realy really need to keep this going and not dissapointing anyone in this. from what i understand this is a very powerfull site, visited by gamers. whell thats in what age area ? 14-24 ? and with all those unique visits. . . i think you need to think more on targeting your sponsor requests. im sure your tring, but if your not, no big sponsor will come and say they will sponsors you... dont waste your time on small companies, think that you have NO RIVAL in this area. your the ONE and you have monopol over this gaming area. if i had a big company, targeted to that agea area, for sure that i would consider helping out such a big community. furthermore, go ahead and explain even more your pottential sponsors, dont just say you need servers and bandwidith. try presenting them with a PLAN, a plan that you have , something that would really improve their image and sales. Think about this, go ahead and tell the company, you can HELP each other very much, dont sound desperate, every big company should desire to be your sponsor. you should really make clear all the benefits that a company can have with you. i think this is getting really long and im going to far away from the point. if you need more of my ideeas just pm me. oh and dont forget ! read this out loud : THIS IS NEVER GOING TO END, ITS GOING TO GET BETTER !

Was just made aware of your post again, realised i had never really read it, and what you write is true, but you must understand that we do this as a hobby, and sadly we do not have enough time to devote to doing business plans and such, we know of our potential, and our current placement on the "marked" but we are simply too short on people, and time to do anything about it...

I think this would be a perfect opportunity for the bigger companies that make their money from the gaming industry to help the e-sport and thereby the industry. I'm in no doubt that HLTV has meant unbelievable much for the gaming industry. HLTV.org has made it possible to watch matches played in Singapore, Dallas, and Copenhagen etc. - World wide that is! And all this for free! That service is so admirable, maybe Pentium, AMD, GeForce, Softrade or some other major gaming related company would be able to help financially? Help the industry guys; you make your living out of this! The closure of hltv.org would be such a big step in the wrong direction. Good luck Nomad and the rest of the crew – None the less, I’ve got a lot of respect for all the work you have put into this, and I would hate to see it slip out of your hands at this point. Well HLTV.org i really hope that you find some serious, and investing sponsor afterall. - That WiredLab company thing, sounded like a good idea, but also i find it a bit strange that they need to reply in a thread to get through :] - Not to offense any of you from HLTV.org - I wish the best luck & whatever is needed for you to not break up, and be a "slower", service, or even payment service! Btw. Lots of stupid comments, dude whats the point in them ? - but i must say :] some of the comments is very serious and could be taken up for a thought or two! - Nice one! - Good luck HLTV.org

Why not use the Bittorrent network as an alternative to share static files? The bandwith usage will be significantly reduced that way.

The majority of our bandwith isnt used for static files so bittorrent isnt a solution in our case. Perhaps you could make a p2p hltv broadcasting program but we really dont have the time to program such a beast.

HLTV is a part of the whole counterstrike business when HLTV stops the sponsers of the teams will reach less people and maybe the next step will be that there are less sponsers. So everybody who has, one way or another, some importance in the whole counterstrike thing has advantage when HLTV continues!
