Xizt MVP of IEM5 European Finals

Richard "Xizt" Landström has been voted MVP of IEM5 European Championship Finals. Also, along with four other players, he is a part of the All-star team of the tournament. For complete results of the vote, read below.

Most tournaments these days do not give out individual awards to players, so we decided to bring you an innovation in 2011 by having an MVP and an All-star lineup vote for every major tournament of the year. However, in order to make the results more credible, they will not only be decided by the public vote, but also by the votes of experts, such as players who participated in those tournaments, as well as journalists from all over the world.

On our first occasion, after IEM5 European Championship Finals, we managed to collect over 3700 votes from our users (with polls in this article) and 60 expert opinions. We have added the results from those two polls and reached the final decision on who the MVP is and what the All-star team of the tournament in Kiev looks like.

MVP

The MVP (Most Valuable Player) of IEM5 European Championship Finals in Kiev is Richard "Xizt" Landström, as he topped both sides of the poll, getting 54% of votes from the experts and 47% from the public.

Even though he is a relatively new name on the scene, during 2010 Landström showed us his potential on several occasions, and in the end he was even placed 18th on our Top 20 players of 2010 ranking. Recently he changed teams, joining fnatic near the end of last year, after previously playing for H2k and Lions.

In his first official appearance with the new team, he became the revelation of the tournament, having the best performance of his career so far and reaching his biggest success. His amazing display in the semi-final and especially the final of the tournament earned him the MVP nomination and subsequently made him the choice of most voters.

Statistics also back up Landström's MVP claim, as he was the best rated player in the playoffs (1.29 rating, 4th overall with 1.19 rating), and also the best clutcher (9 rounds won in 1vsX situations) and the best pistol-round player of the event.

MVP of IEM5 European Championship Finals:

Sweden Richard "Xizt" Landström (fnatic)

Here is what Landström's performances looked like match by match:

Opponent (Result) Stage Score  +/- Rating Demo
Ukraine Na´Vi (16:14) Group stage 22-21 +1 1.01 HLTV
Sweden Lions (15:15) Group stage 23-20 +3 1.07 POV
Russia forZe (16:1) Group stage 13-6 +7 1.34 POV
Denmark TCM (16:3) Group stage 5-10 -5 0.61 HLTV
Germany Alternate (16:3) Group stage 17-10 +7 1.26 HLTV
Ukraine Na´Vi (2:1 in maps) Semi-final 64-44 +20 1.30 HLTV
Denmark mTw (2:1 in maps) Final 86-62 +24 1.28 HLTV

We also conducted an interview with Landström after the event (you can read it here), as well as made a mini-movie with his best moments from the tournament:

All-star

For the first time ever, we have also conducted an All-star lineup vote, whose goal is to give recognition to a few other players who performed well at the tournament along with the MVP. The two sides of the poll agreed on the first four players, while the 5th one was a close call between Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas and Marcus "Delpan" Larsson.

All-star lineup of IEM5 European Championship Finals:

Poland Filip "Neo" Kubski (Frag eXecutors)
Sweden Richard "Xizt" Landström (fnatic)
Denmark Martin "trace" Heldt (mTw)
Sweden Patrik "cArn" Sättermon (fnatic)
Poland Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas (Frag eXecutors)

Filip "Neo" Kubski was the most frequent choice for the All-star lineup in both sides of the poll. He found himself in every 9 out of 10 lineups by our users, and almost as much in the experts' votes. Kubski was statistically the most impressive player of the event, with the by far best rating of 1.33 and without a single bad performance in his 10 maps.

The MVP of the tournament, fnatic's Richard "Xizt" Landström was a very close second most chosen player with around 85% of the votes from both the public and the experts.

The only player from runners-up mTw who stood out significantly was Martin "trace" Heldt and that was recognized in the vote as he was the third most picked player. The experts gave him quite a bit more credit, having him in 85% of their teams compared to our users 64%. Heldt was a real one man army in this tournament, having a rating 20% better than his team's average and the 2nd best of all players (1.23).

The fourth most picked player was the ingame leader of the winning team fnatic, Patrik "cArn" Sättermon. He was the choice of 65% of his colleagues and journalists, while our every second user had him in their lineup. In addition to leading the team in the game, Sättermon also excelled statistically, particularly during the group stage as he helped fnatic secure some very important wins early on, especially the one in their debut against Na´Vi which proved to be the catalyst for their further success.

The last place in the All-star team was a close call in the vote, as Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas barely edged the best awper of the tournament, Marcus "Delpan" Larsson to complete this fearsome fictional lineup. The choice of those two players was also the biggest disagreement between the experts and the public, as our users wanted Larsson with 42% of their votes, while the experts gave the advantage to Wojtas as their 5th player with 36%. In the end, either of them would have been a justified pick, while Wojtas deserved it if by nothing else then by his impressive stats, as he was the 3rd best rated player of the event (1.21 rating).

Denmark Oliver "minet" Minet (mTw) 4.5% 1.7% 7.2%
Denmark Michael "Friis" Jørgensen (TCM) 2.7% 1.7% 3.8%

In the end, we would like to thank the journalists from the following fellow sites for contributing their votes for our non-public poll: fnatic.com, XplayN.com, mymym.com, fragbite.se, cyberarena.tv, team-aAa.com, cnfrag.com, SK-gaming.com, rakaka.se, proplay.ru, ESL TV.

We hope to get in contact with even more colleagues next time and even more players, but at the same time we also feel that the poll didn't suffer from a lack of votes, as the results show enough diversity and feature many different opinions.

We hope you enjoyed our coverage of the IEM5 European Championship Finals, as we are now putting an end to it and we are turning to the future. The next tournament that you will be able to follow closely on HLTV.org will be WGF from 17-19th February, while soon after that comes one of the biggest tournaments of the year, IEM5 World Championship from March 1-5.

fnatic.com probaly voted for the fnatic players, xplayn for Friis and minet, etc. You can see that 1.7 % is 1 vote. xplayn on Friis and minet gives their 1.7 % The three russian/ukranian sites on ed1k gives 5 % It's a fine pool, but still very biased. :p

Well, I can't tell you the exact results, but I can tell you that was not the case in general, as most of the journalists seem to have been quite objective. Also on a related note, maybe I should have mentioned in the article, the players were not allowed to vote for themselves or their teammates.

I'm not saying it's not a good choice of experts, in my opinion it's the best you've found. Just said that some of the votes are still biased, but the "don't vote on yourself" rule probaly avoided most of it.

Not allowed to vote for their teammates is objective ? Are you kidding me ? For example. Your team wins an event, your teammate had 3.5kdr overall and every single player knows and agrees that he was absolutely sick in that tournament and should be MVP. Then they ask you and you can't vote for him ? Even if it is retarded not to vote for him. lol

I beg to differ. I was the one from Fnatic who voted for this one. I picked NEo, TaZ, trace, Xizt and dsn (could have been cArn, don't remember). And yes I picked Xizt for MVP of the tournament, but you can't be MVP if you haven't won the tournament. And Xizt did almost singlehandedly win both against NaVi and mTw in the last two games. I wouldn't say it's biased because we as "experts" are glad to have our opinions valued by sites like HLTV.org. We won't be picked again if we go with 4 fnatic players or 4 of our own nationality. I wholeheartedly feel that those five in the allstar team was the best five, and yes I see why it's such a close race between TaZ and Delpan, but it's really hard to argue against the numbers. They are - after all - reflecting the opinions of the public quite well :-)

You might be right. My two examples probaly doesn't reflect the rest, after all it's only 5 votes out of 300. Just to be clear, I like the list. I like that other sites and player have participated, and that it's compared to the public. I would have prefered that the players and the sites was seperated tho. :) Nice picks, I had the same, if you chose dsn. :)

Pretty awesome stuff. Tg has been bringing some great after-tournament in-depth coverage and statistics which was something HLTV.org was really lacking imo. Next step: setup a competitive CS1.6 wiki so everyone can keep track of every player/team/event's history! :P

neo being 7th best player (according to hltv) is obviously horrible lol.. his team didn't make the finals or semi-finals but like once last year and 7th place shows how good he still is individually..if 7th place is bad out of the entire world then idk what's good.. not to mention this last tournament where he was so amazing CT side on every map. neo is still the best player in the world and I'm not a fanboy at all..even if his stats didn't show it in 2008-09 I still think he was the best overall player, and then f0rest of course :D

+1 I like the differentiation between experts and the community, you can clearly see, that players like dsn, niko or trace are way too underrated in the community well deserved all in all, I would have liked to see an awp in the all-star-team though.

trace was an awp as far as this tournament is concerned, it was his primary weapon :)

ofc you're right (unfortunately I have not watched a lot mTw matches this tournament), but I still like trace more as a rifle player :)

neo and f0rest are more rifle players that occasionally awp.. trace is a primary awper that is an animal with rifles as well, and top5 with the green beast imo..he was absolutely fucking insane at IEM with the awp but if a player is good they should be able to use every weapon, like Delpan, markeloff, Savage and falleN are all AMAZING with rifles..and so is trace, but he's such a beast with the awp he fits that role beautifully that was vacated by sunde.. trace awp > sunde awp in '08 (just my opinion)

haha +1 I think you are totally right! You can tell that using my votes 4 example :P I voted 4 delpan (maybe 4 his charisma & play style) and DSN had much better statistic and deserved it much more xD

Yep, I had chosen cArn, neo, xizt, delpan and taz That costed me a mtw's fanboy attack, but in the end I can stand that in experts' opinion should be trace > delpan. But it's nonsense to but delpan and trace in one team :) TaZ deserved 5th spot...

nah that's not what I mean. Neo carries fx almost all the time, but this event taz was amazing also and kuben wasn't that bad, had a great match vs navi. What I meant is that xizt made more clutches, more important frags which helped them a lot.

the fact of the matter is if if mTw would of gotten 1st place, then the mvp = trace if FX would of gotten 1st place, then the mvp = neo fnatic won it, so it went to Xizt, it usually ALWAYS goes to a finals guy, that's just what i've noticed all 3 were well deserving, neo was fucking insane throughout the entire event, but Xizt in the playoffs definitely nailed the mvp with all the important rounds he won

On top of that the only two maps Neo and co. lost this tournament were against mTw and both with the closest score possible 19-21 and 14-16. Furthermore Neo was the second best entry-kill player of the tournament, the 5th best AWP'er and the single best rated player with K/D-rating throughout the tournament of impressive 1.33.

Yea, we clearly saw that in the European Championship Finals where SK got knocked out in the group stages by drawing against mTw and losing to both MYM (3-16) and FX (yes, that's the ones with Neo in their team..) f0rest and get-right are certainly great, great players - but as of right now in this very moment, FX are the stronger team. "Neo get to much attention and i dont see his team getting nowhere." How you can state that after a tournament like this with a 3rd place finish is beyond me. This is, more or less, the best we have seen FX since 2007 or so, and they surely just proved once more that they're never to be counted out. You might wanna get your facts a bit more straight in the future mate, no offence :)

Fair enough :) And you're right.. dns, forest and get_right have won far more first places than the polish guys - but money-wise it's actually not that bad if you compare the top teams. fnatic - 468.155 $ mTw - 314.376 $ SK - 271.660 $ FX - 225.320 $ NaVi - 210.949 $ Impressive by NaVi of course, being such a new team. The polish guys are putting up a decent fight for sure, although you're still right of course :) My point is just that in this last tournament they did really great, and if they can keep that up, they'll be able to compete even for 1st places this year - and it's always great with more teams competing than just one or a few winning it all in my opinion :)

The average user of any site is a newbie, so I don't really get your point. Most journalists have actually watched games for many years where as a lot of the community guys just base their opinion on a single good or bad performance.

lfmao, when i saw this topic, i knew before i clicked that polish fanboys would whine as they always do. Pathetic... congrats Xizt! Be happy that hltv is working hard making those good articles instead -.-

coz taz had better rating and they've chosen a sniper already (trace) moreover taz is better with rifles so they picked him.

neo neo neo...always so much talk about him...i wouldnt have been suprised if neo won MVP this time...he played amazing...he is really back in shape. But can you polish guys just calm down.. this has happend before...its not always the player with the best stats that wins MVP...just look at last year.

Dsn should have won it imo, don't think Xizt did as well as dsn did throughout, he was consistently getting opening frags against mTw and during the whole tourny.
