SK top IEM5 group of death

SK Gaming finished day 1 the happiest as they picked up the first place in the IEM5 World Championship semi finals.

Going into the last round, none of the top four placed teams in Group B were saved as all of them could still walk out empty-handed. SK Gaming and Lions had an advantage, in theory, as they were to battle Evil Geniuses and redCode, respectively, two teams who had nothing to play for but pride.

In a rather surprising move, Lions did not vote de_inferno out, and that moved certainly cost them as they were downed 16-8 by a stubborn Korean side, a result which denied them access to the playoffs.

Elsewhere, SK Gaming were made to work hard to move past Evil Geniuses, beating the American team 16-11 after being down 9-6 at the break.

In the final group match, Na´Vi played their last card and it worked out for them as they defeated fnatic 16-9, with the scoreboard showing 12-3 in their favour when the teams switched sides.

This means that SK Gaming finished at the top of the group, while Na´Vi placed second and fnatic third. These last two teams will now meet the third and second-placed sides from Group A, respectively.

He was playing with a team who had alot of pressure to do well in this tournament against the best team of 2010, imagine being him in that situation. He'll do better in the semifinals.

it was actually against Evil Geniuses, and of course I understand that he has the pressure.. I am not saying he is bad!! He is really good - he is a part of a team who managed to earn 1st place in the group of death... I just remembered very funny Joe's comment on him and that's it))) Anyway, gl SK in the play-offs... I wonder what will happen to allen if SK will be at least top2 at this tournament

Sorry! My memory is failing me, I thought the last game was Na'Vi because I totally forgot about the EG game. To be honest, I think allen will still have his spot when he's ready to play again, but dennis seems like the perfect replacement. =)

f0rest had some great rounds as well. Stop acting like SK relied solely on face to win. face stepped up, but he's part of SK so that doesn't make SK "saved by face" but rather face playing brillantly to help SK even more. Something like that. Every team gets saved by one of their players at random times. It is CS, man, sometimes one player will do the job for a whole round or several...

good job for sk i guess the reason why lions didn't vote out de_inferno was that Redcode recently change a player and they were defeated easily by sk on inferno on their first game today,so i assume they underestimated the Koreans...it's a shame that can't see pingu's performance any more at this event.

I watched nearly every game of today's matches.. And yes I got mad at first because of all the crappy delays which derived from technical difficulties, thus not being able to watch fnatic against LIONS and redCode against SK I think.. Anyways, it's definitely gg for LIONS which is meant in a good way but the evil Koreans denied them the advance.. LIONS where surely the team that impressed me most today(along with SK versus both fnatic and NaVi on nuke and train respectively) and it was a pleasure to watch them play the way they played today.. Apart from the "Gux letting 3 SK players stroll their way through CT spawn unharmed/undetected" incident(unsatisfying is an understatement at that moment for me), that allowed SK to tie the game, LIONS were the team to watch in my opinion exhibiting solid play against both NaVi on tuscan and against SK on inferno. I guess you could say it was "really bad timing" on that round, while it was indeed SK's call attack B from CT Spawn, I bet when they were pushing from arch they didn't expect absolutely no resistance from LIONS whatsoever.. And, couple of rounds before this happened, I was chatting with a friend on steam who was watching the game also, when LIONS had to eco -even though they almost won a semi famas/deagle buy- and I predicted that they will buy AWPs at the last round and win it.. After NIKO's first frag of the round from both teams(holding the push from banana) I was so sure that LIONS would win the match but..SK though otherwise.. Well gg LIONS wellplayed badbeat and remember!! Next time exclude inferno against ex-WMF!..what are you, st00pid? Last thing I have to say about fnatic and redCode, please bear with me. When I heard on the stream that LIONS lost and it became clear that fnatic will advance to the playoffs I was starting to think that maybe fnatic will win this tournament to repeat their IEM5 EC success.. IF this happens, I want cArn to give to the Koreans a portion of the prize money because if it weren't for them fnatic wouldn't even be at the playoffs right now.. Of course that isn't going to happen(and by that I mean carn giving money to the Koreans and not fnatic not repeating their success)..We shall see! I believe it was the most thrilling opening to an IEM WC we've seen so far with a lot of twist and a taste of bitter for LIONS exit after proving that they can deliver against the best. I believe LIONS is the team to watch in the future. SK along with NaVi have shown that probably they will be the ones playing on the grand final but we haven't seen Group A yet, so.. Happy viewing to all of you and may the best team win! (although my heart is torn between fnatic and FX)

I don't really get it, why is Lions going off? You need 8 teams in the quarter finals and I guess it's 4 teams from each group. So, the top 4 teams (considering the points) in Group B are Sk, Na vi, Fnatic and Lions. Why don't they qualify? I'm sorry if the question is too dumb but I have quite not understood the whole idea here. Any help would be really appreciated.

No, top 1 of the group will go directly to the semi-finals, while the the second team plays the third team from the other group to get to the semi-final. So Na'vi is gonna play the third team from group A next, and fnatic will play whoever finishes second in group A :)

To be honest, this is a bit confusing and I would have preferred 'my way'. Well, We could have seen Lions more. I don't know, it's just a bit 'unfair' they have to leave while they played good. Just a thought. Looking forward to Group A matches today. Go FX :)

lions were just unlucky, and the exp will come to them, throwing away a 15-12 lead or something even though they won the first half 11-4 against sk, and picking inferno vs redcode :( other than that they are deffo the team to shock us all for the rest of the year imo -khrystal +moddii ;)
