Evil Geniuses win ESEA Invite S8

Evil Geniuses have finished on top of the ESEA Invite Season 8 Playoff, following a 2-0 victory against DINC in the Grand Final.

Going into the season eight LAN finals, Evil Geniuses came as the second seed, with a 12-4 record after playing the online part of the season. In their first match at the event, EG were on a tough challenge against UMX.US, who managed to take one map off the defending ESEA Invite championship. Moving on, EG won the upper-bracket final against Backfire with a 2-0 manner, booking the spot in the final.

Facing EG in the final were DINC, who despite a shaky start in the early stages of the tournament, produced fine results later on, defeating Area 51, UMX.US and Backfire in the lower-bracket.

First map in the Grand Final, the two teams squared off on the ESEA custom map de_lite. DINC got to a rocking start playing the CT side, having a 12-3 lead at half-time. It did however not scare away EG, who took seven straight rounds, as second half started. DINC were able to string together two rounds, but the money situation hurt them bad and EG wrapped it up with a 16-14 win on the map their in-game leader Andrew "Irukandji" Timmerman helped develop.

This pushed the match to de_dust2, which was picked by DINC. EG started on the Terrorists side, but it was DINC who managed to win the pistol round. In the next round EG shattered DINC's great start by winning the second round, as they had decided to go for a full buy. EG pushed to build up a big lead and DINC did not find much luck to stop them, ending up securing a total of five rounds, while EG had sealed a five round lead with a 10-5 score line at half-time.

A catwalk push from DINC in the second half pistol round was shut down by EG and increased their lead. As rounds passed by, DINC tried to close the big gab, but EG shut to them down as DINC reached 11 rounds won, EG sealed the victory with a 16-11 score and 2-0 overall.

ESEA Invite Season 8 Playoff Final Standings

1. United States Evil Geniuses - $7,000
2. United States DINC - $3,000
3. United States Backfire - $1,800
4. United States UMX.US - $1,200
5-6. Canada Area51 - $1,000
5-6. Canada Blight - $1,000

With the win Evil Geniuses do not only score the $7,000 cheque, but also their sixth ESEA Invite title, the fourth in a row.

is that the usual list of best teams in the us? like EG and then DINC is 2nd? saw some of DINC vs Backfire and it was just like watching a match from some 2nd level gatherchannel in DK :-D

Part of the problem in the North American CS scene is teams change rosters dramatically very often. Unfortunately between every ESEA season most teams change rosters dramatically, so there is no usual list of best teams in the US, beyond EG at least. I suppose we can add BackFire now because they've been playing together longer than any of the other teams that made the finals, as long as they stay together between now and the next season. It can only be said that certain players are often on top N.A. teams (sgares, pauly, dizzaman, etc.).

DINC has not. This is the first season of ESEA they've played together. That is, they've only been on the same team since January of this year, and four months is not a "long time". esea.net/teams/23271?tab=roster proof of what I say edit: Also, aZn and jstone quit playing competitively for a "long time", and this was their first season back. As for Steno, pauLy, and sgares, last season of ESEA is when they started playing together. Two seasons of ESEA isn't very long.

and its not a short time, in four months u can prepare the team for every competition you want, fnatic trainned about 1 month with the new lineup and beat navi 2 times this year, 4 months its a goooood time to pratice.

Except that's not the case here. pauLy left on vacation for a full month of that four month season, so they had to play and practice without him. aZn is addicted to online poker, so wasn't putting in hours until the US Department of Justice finally shut down most of them. He also moved to Hawaii, so he's been playing with 100+ ping. I'm not sure what sgares's deal is, but he's been playing with 100-200 ping, also. Furthermore, DINC is known for taking it easy in the regular season and not putting in hours. Just look at the fact they barely made it into the finals, coming in 6th (out of 12 teams in the division, 2 of which died early on, and 3 others that didn't beat anyone but each other). While you mention fnatic who is paid to practice and is serious about the game, DINC does not pay a salary and the players are nothing unlike that. Only if they are together for a long time will will they get better.

Teams in the us are normally very spread out so it's not uncommon to see ppl with like 100 ping in esea matches.

Lower levels have multiple divisions by geography, but Invite only has one (since there are only 12 teams). There are players from Hawaii to Canada and east coast to west coast, so pings can be high. If teams can't agree on a server, the official rule is if the ping difference team vs team is more than 15 latency on average, then one can force them to switch. It is not common to have 100-200, but more like 40-80 happens a lot.

If you only played in servers on the east coast and mainly new york... you could probably compete with that kind of ping. I play in mainly dallas and chicago servers and get 60-70 ping most of the time.

Back when I played I only considered about 2 teams comparable to good euro players - don't even remember their names tbh, but I don't really expect any team in the US nowadays to play at a very high level.

Don't know what you're talking about. I watched all of the ESEA Invite LAN final matches and I watch tons of matches at international tournaments. The difference in individual skill and team tactics is not as big as you claim. The only thing lacking is the in depth preparation which non-salaried teams can't commit to. A prize money of 7000$ split 5 ways is not worth the time investment either.

well, I've kind of put you all in a bad situation for putting in your argument. Because I don't really think anyone from around the world knows these players I'm using as comparison to, so sorry about that. But what I mean is that they're too un-organized compared to the elite of Europe, and that's what I feel sad about, I'd really love for the U.S Scene to be able to produce at least 5-6 teams that could match the elite European teams. Hope that gave you a better understanding of what I'm trying to say.

Are you talking about EG? They only lost one map ;P. It's hard to get more dominant than that. Part of the reason they didn't win big on each map is there aren't many teams competitive with EG, and most scrims are through ESEA, so they end up scrimming against the same teams and players all the time. That familiarity means teams can adapt some when they see EG doing things similar to what they've seen them do before, making the matches closer than they would otherwise be.

It's 3 months but you make it seem like they are working 40 hours a week for 3 months. its like 2 matches a week and then a lan final x.x

Well, they're "working" more than 40 hours a week preparing/practicing. I'm just saying, full-time job > CS tournaments in money-making. get it?:)

You're lost in the details, friend. DINC needed to win four maps, but they didn't win any. In that sense, it was easy for EG. As for the rest of the matches, EG only lost one map, so again, easy.

i miss the days when the NA invite scene had the teams of 3d, col, jmc, pandemic, EG...all of these teams were top tier, and had the ability to win. :(

Really nice job from EG, Storm is still the weakest link but they manage to get by because it's vs American teams. I'm afraid once they start to compete outside of USA the problems with euro teams will continue. I'm still waiting for thoMz to connect with EG for Storm. When Storm is ready of course, because Storm deserves the right to retire or quit not get cut. fRoD thoMz Irukandji n0thing dboorN
