GC Guangzhou qualifiers announced

European and North American qualifiers for the Intel Extreme Masters Global Challenge Guangzhou have been announced.

The Chinese Global Challenge was announced earlier today with a $40,000 prize purse and will take place October 1-5 in Guangzhou, located in the southern part of the country, about 120km northwest of Hong Kong.

For the European teams, there will be a total of two qualifiers, where top four from each of these qualifiers will advance to the final qualifier. The final qualifier will have three slots for the Global Challenge Guangzhou, though teams have to handle travel and accommodation on their own. Signups will decide if it will be BO1 or BO3 format, it will be single elimination regardless of how many signups. You can find information about the qualifiers below:

  Start time Date
Qualifier #1 13:00 July 31 Sign up
Qualifier #2 13:00 August 7 Sign up
Final qualifier TBA August 14

For more detailed information regarding sign up, maps and more, simply go here.

North American teams will have one qualifier, where one slot for the Global Challenge Guangzhou will be up for grabs and the winning team will
have to handle travel and accommodation on their own. The qualifier will be played in a double elimination bracket with preset maps. To sign up, click here and for more info go here. The qualifier will have the following schedule:

  Date Time Map
Round 1 August 2 03:00 de_dust2
Round 2 August 4 03:00 de_forge
Round 3 August 6 03:00 de_train
Round 4 August 8 03:00 de_nuke
Round 5 August 10 03:00 de_tuscan
Round 6 August 11 03:00 de_train
Round 7 August 14 02:00 de_nuke
Finals August 14 03:00 de_inferno

Global Challenge Guangzhou will have a total of eight participating teams, four of them will be Chinese and will be found via online qualifiers in the country, which have already started.

Indeed. But if it is single elimination and we'll see all the good teams attend it won't necessarily be easy to make top4 in one of the qualifiers if they have to play with 2 standins. It depends a lot on the bracket also how easy or hard it'll be for them. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised to see forest, delpan and get_right destroy some proper teams just playing "randomly" with 2 standins. I'd imagine it isn't fun to play against them either as you're kind of "supposed to" win as they have 2 standins but then you face that kind of players who may do something unorthodox and shoot like crazy when playing as a mix..

I understood that anyone could signup. Although they do say that "please don't signup if you don't have the means to come to the finals" or something like that, there will surely be enough pro teams to give enough teams who actually can get there (and they will probably take the top4 spots anyway) so I'd see it as a positive to have people signing up with their own teams. I'm not sure though what esl's policy really is.

No, it isn't. Single elimination refers to the whole structure of the tournament. So there won't be upper and lower bracket, as in recent GameGune tournament. Each team will only have 1 chance, if the team loses a match, the team is out of the tournament. The format refers to how many maps will be played in one match.

Well.. I believe that's is good for them to encourage the national teams (China) but will not join the teams everyone want to see in a tournament.. If they want to join 4 Chinese teams, they should run a competition at least with 12 squads. And the teams distribution around the globe would be something like this: 4 Chinese (default) 4 European 2 American 2 Invitation (they could be European, Asians, African, Oceania teams)

why are you so mad at new IEM's rules ? i'm sorry for you and your "Mr.IdontCareAbout" but some teams need help like that to grow up and improve his game, and maybe, have a chance to qualifie to IEM.
