Top 20 players of 2011: aslak (17)

At number 17 of our list we have its youngest member and one of the revelations of 2011, Timi "aslak" Verkkoperä. The 18-year-old Finnish AWPer was only really noticed in the second half of the year when the current WinFakt squad was put together, and he took the world by surprise turning into one of the most promising talents out there.

Before 2011, Timi "aslak" Verkkoperä was a completely unknown name in the international scene, only playing for second-rate Finnish teams while waiting for the right opportunity to come along. He spent most of 2010 playing for munkka as they were trying to make a breakthrough, and he did get to visit a major international event at the end of the year when the team attended DreamHack Winter. They even made it to the first round of playoffs, but Electronic Sahara turned out to be too good for them, defeating them easily in two maps. Still, experiencing a major international LAN tournament meant a lot to a team with three teenagers, including Verkkoperä.

Waiting for the right opportunity

As the calendar turned to 2011, Timi "aslak" Verkkoperä was still a member of munkka which meant that he would have to watch the first couple of major events from his home. The team's first appearance on LAN was at digifest in March, but as that event turned into a disaster there wasn't much to take from there, except maybe being put in their place of being far from Finland's top, losing 4-16 to Power Gaming.

At the end of March, munkka took part in our HLTV.org Xperia PLAY prelude, which is where Verkkoperä first turned attention to himself. In the first round of the tournament, the Finns outplayed Danish team Cheap Times in three maps, while Verkkoperä ended up best rated in both map-wins and the match overall (80:60 score, 1.20 rating). Their next opponent was mTw a few days later, and they were easily defeated as expected, but Verkkoperä proved that his performance in the previous round was not a one-time thing, as he put up a good fight against the powerful Danes, even recording a highlight with the AWP:

Denmark Xperia PLAY 2011 (Group stage #2)

Although that tournament was online, the potential in the player was finally spotted by international audience, and it was time for him to prove it on LAN. That is exactly what he did at Xperia PLAY a couple of weeks later, where munkka managed to get through the first group stage at the expense of alchemists and right behind RG-Esports. They fell into a group of death in the next stage, having to face SK Gaming, fnatic and Lions, which spelled the end of the tournament for them. Still, Verkkoperä left an excellent impression as the team's first star, managing to get a 1.34 rating (7th best at the event).

The next event for them was ICSC 8 in May, which started online with two group stages. They made it out of the first group and at the end of the month earned a call to join a Portuguese-based organization Excello. In the second group stage they were drawn to meet SK Gaming, ESC Gaming and Virtus.pro, but by that time Verkkoperä had already left the team, and Excello would end up dropping out of the competition.

aslak vs Millenium during ICSC8 first group stage

The reason he left was that in mid-June, a new team named paistit was composed by Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen, with the purpose of competing in ICSC8 as a replacement for Online Kingdom. Verkkoperä's talent was recognized, as he got a call up to become a member of this new lineup containing Finland's best. They found themselves in a group containing Frag eXecutors and Moscow Five and they surprised everyone by managing to top this group with 2 wins, a draw and a loss, which secured them a spot at the LAN stage of the tournament.

The team then announced that they would become a permanent lineup and they took on sponsorship from ROCCAT in order to attend the ICSC8 finals, their first LAN together. They showed an average performance, doing well in the group stage, but being sent home by the Poles Frag eXecutors after a 0-2 quarter-final loss. Verkkoperä didn't delight in his first LAN experience with the team, having a below average 0.93 rating as team's 4th.

They still proved themselves enough to be called up by e-Stars as a replacement team for Evil Geniuses, and they found a new organization in form of Belgian-based WinFakt, which would help them get to Korea. That tournament turned out to be the one where Verkkoperä would make his breakthrough and establish himself as a world-class talent. Among so many big names in attendance, the young Finn ended up as the event's best rated player with a 1.27 rating, while his team also surprised many by finishing 5-6th.

Apart from also being the best fragger of the event with 0.86 kills per round, Verkkoperä was the best AWPer too, recording an amazing 0.46 awpKPR, the highest by any player at any major tournament this year.

The next event for WinFakt was IEM6 Global Challenge Guangzhou, where they once more replaced an American representative, this time team Temporary. They finished in 3rd place, being outplayed by fnatic in the semi-final and by mousesports earlier in the group stage.

Verkkoperä didn't shine much this time, recording the team's 3rd best 1.10 rating, although mostly thanks to his performance in the 3rd place decider against eFuture (44:12 score, 1.93 rating). He did however end up as the best AWPer at his second event in a row (0.39 awpKPR) and also earned his second All-Star nomination.

Only a few days later, the Finns came to Poland to take part in Samsung Euro Championship. They started the tournament by surprising the home team AGAiN and topping their group, while later being outplayed by Natus Vincere in the semi-final in a close three-map encounter. That turned into another 3rd place campaign, although it was their biggest success so far considering this tournament had better competition than the one in Guangzhou.

Verkkoperä was this time back to his e-Stars level, proving that his performance in Korea wasn't an accident. He was again WinFakt's best rated by far with a 1.24 rating (3rd best of all players), while he also had the most kills at the event (220), the most AWP kills (74) and was the most dominant player (21 rounds with 3+ kills). That made him an MVP nominee and resulted in later being picked for the All-Star lineup of the tournament. He also had significant impact with his AWP in the semi-final against Natus Vincere, recording 21 kills in the first map when his team won 16-13, while one of the rounds turned into a highlight:

As the only team that attended all four major tournaments in October, WinFakt were seen at ESWC as well. They made it to the quarter-final without much trouble despite losing to Natus Vincere, but then once again fell to SK Gaming. Verkkoperä was solid in their short campaign, playing well in the group stage, ending up as the team's 2nd best with a 1.05 rating and for the fifth event in a row being one of the best AWPers (0.25 awpKPR).

WinFakt also attended MSI BEAT IT Russia in November which was their last appearance in 2011, and they finished in a somewhat disappointing 6th place, losing to Moscow Five in the quarter-final. Verkkoperä had a solid display, sharing a 1.12 rating with two of his teammates as their best. He also recorded 96 AWP kills, his personal high.

World-class talent on the rise

Born in 1993, Timi "aslak" Verkkoperä was only 6 years old when the first version of Counter Strike came out, and in 2011 he accomplished what many from his generation are still trying to do, what even more from previous generations didn't manage to do, and that is to become one of the best in the world.

He started the year quietly, in munkka, waiting for his chance to come. When it finally did in the second half of the year, with the formation of the current WinFakt team, he took the world by surprise by becoming the best rated player at an extremely competitive e-Stars Seoul event.

He later confirmed that he is the real deal with an excellent performance at SEC, where he helped WinFakt to a 3rd place, while also establishing himself as one of the best AWPers in the world.

Although he attended only 6 major tournaments, he managed to collect 9th most kills with the big green (277), while on average he was the 5th best of all players (0.29 awp kills per round).

All in all, he had an impressive 1.17 rating at those 6 tournaments, even spoiling it at the two less competitive ones (IEM6 GC Guangzhou and IEM6 GC New York). He also has an MVP nomination and an All-Star lineup appearance from SEC, along with another two All-Star lineup nominations, which made him a certain member of this list.

On the other hand, he didn't help his team to any notable titles and he missed many major tournaments throughout the year, which gave some other players advantage on this list despite his better rating, while he ended up at the 17th place.

ESC will only have 3 players overall (neo, taz, pasha) whereas SK-gaming will have 4 (everyone except robban) but still ESC is the official "team of the year"... It's based on individual achievements and performance and has nothing to do with the results of the player's team. Oh, and it's based on the rating system so it's fair to say that aslak was indeed the 17th best player. Ratings never lie! :)

aslak > Dosia & Pasha & starix. THIS IS A JOKE. He is one of the best AWPers, he is a great talent and player but he is NOT better than Dosia or pasha or starix. But ofc, the ranking is based on stats and Dosia & Pasha & starix played many more matches and they played VERY bad in some matches especially in the beginning of the year which meant that their ranking in the top 20 would be less better than deserved. Aslak played few matches and played very good against some teams but pretty much had a BIG RATING against bad teams. This IMO is not true, that aslak is better than Dosia and pasha but that's what happens when you go after stats, it's the only thing you can go after unfortunately which doesn't create deserved rankings in the top 20 of the year. Starix, pasha and Dosia are overall much more complete than aslak and simply better.

I didn't want to do this but I'm still gonna do it. You said starix, Dosia and pasha have better teammates and that is true. Since this ranking is based on stats, unfortunately because it's the only way you can rank the guys sadly, it's harder for starix, Dosia and pasha to get a better rating than their teammates because of the competition in the team. Aslak doesn't have as good teammates which makes it easier for him to get a top rating in the matches his team wins.

you my good sir are moron. all he's saying is.. if a player plays 10 matches and get a rating on 1.1, and another player plays 100 matches and gets 1.0 rating that doesn't make the player with the higher rating better.. actually it's bullshit because we all know dosia.. starix and pasha are fucking amazing players (not hating on ur loverboy aslak) but because they attent to way more events then winfrakt comparing them would be stupid.

no, im saying that in this ranking they dont use the ratings from every event a player has been to, only the biggest ones, so they all have about the same amount of events in this ranking, only the events that are included in the article are used

Dosia, starix and pasha played MANY MANY more matches than aslak and played very bad in the start of the year where they did not perform good at all which made their rating very bad. Aslak didn't play as many matches at all. Aslak didn't play as many maps like them but he did very good in the matches he did play and got a high rating against some not-so-good-teams where he had a rating like 2^ which made his rating BIG.

So if a guy plays 1 match and gets a rating of like 3.5 and then you have a guy playing 10 matches and his rating will be like 1.7 of all those matches the guy that played 1 match is much better? Because his rating was better? Like I said, starix, Dosia and pasha PLAYED _MANY MANY MANY_ more matches than aslak and they didn't play good in all those matches and their rating was very bad in some of those matches.

I'd just like to point out that only events highlighted in the article (with a table, team placing, rank in the team etc.) were counted for the rating. To answer someone else, the Global Challenges indeed didn't have very good competition, but they are more prestigious and offered a much bigger prize than events such as ASUS, which is why those were counted.

This a top 20 rating. You can't make a top 20 with your own opinions who was better because everyone will disagree. So with rating is the best. And if you are a good player your rating is always high. He didn't do the rating with bad teams he played the best with top teams Winfakt won some good matches vs top teams.

It's the rating. You can't really do anything.. If Tgwri1s makes a ranking in his opinion everyone will start talking shit that this player shouldn't be in this position he should be higher or lower not even in top 20. So the rating is the best thing to make a ranking. And this is something to make the site more entertaining and bring something new not only news about players, teams, highlights and events it doesn't mean that aslak is better than starix ,pasha or dosia..

He didn't. If we go trought your logic fallen would be in top5 4 sure, because he got top1 awp in WCG, won IEM5 Americas with a amazing rating and also got amazing rating on IEM5 Worlds C'ship.... oh.. and also WCG Pan... Ps: we won't even see him on this top20, got it ?

Top 1 in WCG? Delpan has 96 awp kills, fallen has 72 kills. IEM5 America doesn't count no top teams in there also WCG pan.

Yeah you still did not got the point of it. It's not about event place + frags + ratings, it's a mix of maps, rating and so on. And oh so WCG pan IEM5 Americas doesn't count ? So why digifest counts ? it's much worse then both togheter.

I'm not a fanboy of him, I just used him as example because of hes rating and because of your coments saying that it's all about rating x maps x event place, and you are completly wrong, read your coments again. I don't think he's better than aslak or pasha or delpan read it again my friend. btw: my fav player is trace not fallen ;]

it's about the players statistics not about how many tournaments has the team won. and actually your argument about the amount of maps played thing is stupid because if aslak had played more maps he would be top10 for sure.

Then why the f... is pasha in front of Dosia? btw more maps played = worse statistics especially on those tournaments such as IEM5 euro and IEM5 world where I'm sure WF would be happy if they passed groupstage.

well I dont know about the pasha and Dosia thing, you should probably ask Tgwri1s. but how I see the case with pasha is that he has had double the chances to get better stats than aslak. so basically aslak is much more better than pasha percentagely. I think he would have done as good in IEM as in other tournaments, because you can see aslak has done very well vs top teams from the start.

Based on your logic it's impossible for example for trace to be in this list since mTw hasn't really won anything just like WinFakt hasn't won anything either... ? But what trace and mTw has done is that they've been on top3-4 placings in almost every tournament they attended =) SO... By your logic the only players who can be in the top20 list have to have won at least 1 tournament. So what I think is, that your logic is absolutely something I don't agree with.

You didn't understood. I replied to him when he mentioned that as a reason why is pasha in front of dosia. They I wrote that as a question, then why is aslak in front of pasha and dosia. Maybe trace and mTw haven't won anything this year but they placed higher on better tournaments. Trace should definitely be in top15 since he won MVP award on DH and was consistent during whole year, at least when he was in mTw.

Well, since you are so insistent with comments everywhere attacking the ranking, let me try explaining a bit. Despite having a lower rating, pasha is in front of Dosia due to being so influential in his team's wins (and some big matches), while Dosia as a member of a top5-8 team, wasn't even M5's best player and didn't even get into any All-Star lineups at any event. So, even though Dosia showed higher quality displays over time (better rating), pasha is in front with 2 MVP nominations and 3 All-Star selections. Even with those reasons, pasha couldn't be in front of aslak or anyone else, as his rating was too low compared to the rest, and also he was the least dominant player. On the other hand, aslak actually has the same rating as two players who will be in top6, so he is significantly lowered down the list due to not playing many events. Also, apart from having better rating, aslak is in front of Dosia due to being the best in his team, while Dosia was second best. Also, aslak had an MVP nomination at a major tournament and was the best rated at another. starix, as the lowest rated among the top20 and no All-Star selections, was always set for the 20th position. Although there were many others who didn't make the top20 who were considered for that last spot too. I hope you (and others with similar concerns) at least get now that this wasn't done half-heartedly, even though you might not agree with the end result.

Thank you for explanation. That is all what I wanted. Right now you have mentioned few factors which weren't mentioned before. E.G. Also, apart from having better rating, aslak is in front of Dosia due to being the best in his team, while Dosia was second best. It is good to know that statistics like KD ratio aren't only thing you took into consideration, as many HLTV.org users said. GJ(not good great job) btw

Yeah but it's really difficult to do such a big ranking properly. There are many issues which determine player's positions and it's impossible to do the ranking which everyone can agree with, and I still like this one. We all know that pasha or dosia are better and more experienced players who played numerous tough games last year, but we should also appreciate aslak's great performance.

Ok so I assume that you claim it's possible to do the ranking that every objective viewer can agree with, but I was talking about people in general since most of us are fans of some player/team and pretend to be objective. All in all: theoritecally it is possible to make such ranking, but it is impossible in practise.

It doesn't have to be perfect ranking. By adding few factors, and not only statistics, we could be more precise so everyone normal would be satisfied. Just imagine IF GTR becomes the best player in 2011 how many users would say that he didn't deserve it and it is stupid to judge who played better by statistics. In this way no1 could say anything against neo/gtr/or whoever becomes 1st.

aslak is a great awp. All these top 20 players are almost same skill level so I don't see a point in crying so much about what ignorant people will think who is better etc. Here we will see players who achieved most tournament by tournament, not only by rating and not only by achievement. So players with less matches played will have a harder time getting "1st place" and "most kills" or "most dominanant" etc...

I never said he sucked. I'd actually say he's the best "rookie" in the CS Scene, without a doubt. And his AWP can be compared to anyones. Just sayin' that people shouldn't base just these rankings on how good players are.

Which makes his ranking higher because he's the best in his team which means he will in 80% of the time get the highest rating while starix, Dosia and pasha will get a much less higher rating than their teammates.

I mean. You win games easier when you have better teammates ofc but your rating doesn't get higher like vs. bad teams, maybe it does against better teams but if you look how aslak performed against bad teams, he got like a rating of 1.7^ which made his rating a lot higher than starix, Dosia's and pasha's. No offence to aslak, like I said, he's probably the "rookie of the year" in the CS Scene but he's not better than starix, pasha or Dosia like most of the people here are going to say when the ranking is over.

Lidda, This top20 is based in Statistics, and Statistics are Statistics. Everybody with a brain ,know that PASHA, DOSIA AND STARIX Are better than Aslak in 2011. winfakt won against low teams, But the work of hltv not disprove the bad teams. Just they based on statistics. Everybody know that m5, ESC, nd NaVi have played much more games than winfakt, And these are the causes for which lower their rating. We too know that Aslak is the only one that's plays good in his team, And these increases his rating. This isn't the battle, i don't care the fanboys and n00bs that say ASLAK>>>>>> ALL -.-

You're free to make your own rankings. But I warn you, there would still be people whining about your choices. Rankings based purely on players' performances are the most accurate and non-biased you can have. Just read the articles and be happy hltv.org staff writes them =) It's not like there's money involved.

Dude, like I said in some of my previous posts. Stats are like the only thing you can use to do a ranking such like this one but even if it's the only one it isn't the most correct one if you look closely. I'm really enjoying the articles and HLTV.org is like the only community doing these rankings(?) so credits to HLTV.org and Tgwri1s.

aslak maps played : 42 pasha maps played : 80 I mean don't get me wrong. I understand that statistics are only way to make this kind of list. If you just excluded aslak from this list it'd be good. I really don't think that he deserves this.

no its is not, it is not ASLAK's fault that ESC could be in more tournaments than him.. take a look at digifest for example, they won it, and all the aslak matches arent covered i guess (at least that is what tgwri1s said above). there is not 1 player that came out of nowhere and made what aslak made this year, he is by far the rookie of the year, so he deserves to be here, stop those nonsenses ffs, its getting old! and yeah he is WAY WAY WAY WAY better than pasha, no doubts about it

lol..you should check GTs event history, he has 1 tournament with a rating below 1.0 in the last 60, and 90% of them over 1.10, hes the definition of consistent, and he will be rank 1 this year for sure

I aware of GTR's consistency. You should check Neo's though. GeT_RiGhT was constantly good but Neo was constantly the best. Now, if you think that constantly good is better than constantly the best i guess we have real problem here.

dude calm the fuck down , you are going berserk in this thread. "mutual duels" wtf is this!? , just words without meaning . You are acting like neo was 10x times better than get_right but that was not so. Like get_right did not have "individual impact". Imo they were both above the rest of the performances we`ve seen so far this year and deciding which gets the first spot in this ranking is very subjective. Everybody should be grateful for the work done by hltv and stop fighting over a ranking witch imo is pretty accurate. Peace out!

Until they work hard they work fine for me and I'll definitely be grateful for that, but I'm just trying to point out on their mistakes from my point of view and that is that statistics are diffident and after all are made by HLTV.org. They should take into consideration more factors like those I have mentioned above. BTW What is so strange about "mutual duels"? I know that GTR was never that good against AGAiN while Neo shined and played like one man army in few matches. I know that they counted that last year, at least they said they did, but from what I see now I'm starting to doubt on that.

I agree with you. Maybe in the case of neo and getright the stats from direct matches should be the judging factor for their position in this top since both have close ratings this year.

I knew he had better rating and that is all he has. In every other aspect Neo is better. Last year markeloff had average KD ratio while GTR the best and still marke was 1st. Why? Because marke was better in every other aspect.

In 2009 he was the best. In 2010 he was 2nd and he will now be 2nd behind Neo. You are one arrogant and paranoid guy. Just check those MVP awards. Every time he got more votes from experts than from public. Do you have explanation why HLTV.org makes those articles? So they could be forgotten like nothing happened? I don't think so.

dun knw but I feel that aslak is a more dangerous awper in a team like winfakt, than pasha in a team like ESC.... see, PASHA can rely on others, (NEO, KUBEN) that can AWP also.... but aslak is the complete awper in winfakt....

don't really understand why some guys here say his place in top20 isn't deserved. granted, the sample size is relatively small compared to most other top players but still, imho it's big enough. also, comparsion between him, starix, dosia, pasha or any other player in that matter is absolutely pointless.

it's a individual ranking i didn't talk about team performances, i watch most of the tournaments and i checked most of the stats, aslak on tournamkents were he was, was almost all the time best awp, and top3 player overall in the tournament, that's why i have yet to see how in hell pita and xizt will be on this top above aslak lol.

honestly, your post doesn't make any sense. maybe it's your bad english or the train of tought, not really sure. are you implying that if a person frags 200 times and dies 40 times, his k/d ratio is 160? =D if so, that's ludicrous and you need to take some math lessons asap!

Lex didnt do better than kibaken this year in my opinion. btw they could also remember some hacker's or vofkin's highlights. pretty uneasy to choose the best players from this year's events. some teams were not stable and their results aswell. not expecting ukrainian players in top 5 though. maybe Anexis or ESC guys could be on the list.

Great that aslak gets rewarded for his performances. He came from nowhere and shocked the counter-strike scene with his exceptional awp. I think he will be one of the all star players in 2012. I just love his awp.

This ranking is a MASSIVE FAIL. Numbers dont say everything about a game that psicologic aspects, a huge difference of importance on the kills and so much more stuff. PLEASE work on a truly fair ranking!!!
