EG to disband - Report

After rumours going on for months that Evil Geniuses was going to stop sponsoring its CS team at the end of 2011, it seems the rumours have come true and the team itself has disbanded in the process.

The rumours started a couple of months ago when EG's CS team's leader, Andrew "Irukandji" Timmerman's logs were leaked where he said CS wasn't worth putting a lot of effort into anymore with their sponsorship not being renewed for 2012.

Timmerman has now confirmed his retirement on ESEA forums due to him starting dental school and not having enough time to dedicate for CS anymore. The team lost another player in Paul "pauLy" Guerboyan just under a week ago to UMX.

Irukandji retires from competitive Counter-Strike

According to Derek "dboorN" Boorn the team tried adding different players on their ESEA roster to finish out the current season, but were unable to do so due to a site glitch which forced them to forfeit the rest of the current season.

Evil Geniuses was:

United States Derek "dboorN" Boorn
United States Andrew "Irukandji" Timmerman
United States Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert
United States Thomas "thoMz" Garcia

The news are yet to be confirmed by the EG organization but as the players themselves have posted it multiple times on forums, it is likely simply a matter of time.

With the former Evil Geniuses squad losing its sponsorship, it is unlikely they will be able to travel to IEM6 Global Challenge Kiev. If they decided to not attend, the first team in line to replace them will be Natus Vincere.

Is Check Six fRoD and co.? If so, probably because the whole reason EG split up in the first place is because fRoD and n0thing don't get on. Not 100%, but that's what I heard.

I apologize in advance for the long as fuck post, tl;dr version at the bottom. I agree that the US scene has been dying since the CGS but the rest of the scene isn't doing too well either. Just bring up the news archive for 2011 here at HLTV and you would see that a lot of influential players have stopped playing for one reason or another in 2011 alone. Guys like solo, bail, dsn, ave and now Irukandji who is arguably one of the better American players. Those are just names that come to mind, I'm sure I'm missing quite a few influential players not only in respect to the world but also in respect to any given region. It wont be long before the guys from SK, fnatic, NaVi, mousesports ect disband if the competition continues to disappear and the money to send them to events stops rolling in. Its a cruel, sad truth of the matter. I don't challenge these guys passion for the game but I'm quite sure players will stop playing when the money stops coming and there is no reason to blame anyone for doing so. What can we do? Well, there are two options, in my opinion. We can make a push for CSP or we can get our hands dirty and make CS:GO into a better game. In all honesty, the latter is the smarter move. Before you verbally rip me apart, allow me to explain. I think we should support CSP. There was a time about a couple years ago where CSP was in a really good place but the problem was nobody was playing the game and people would attack their project without even playing it. Its a great game, and its not where it should be in terms of being in the competitive circuit but their recent push to move the game ahead has been really inspirational. They welcomed 2 new weapon modelers and a new player modeler to their team. They are in the process of remaking Dust2 from scratch and they are planning on bringing their project out of beta before the end of 2012. There is a lot of potential there. Here is the problem with CSP and why CS:GO may be the smarter move for this scene to migrate to. CSP wont be a game that brings back old players. CSP will be like 1.6 and those who are the best right now will be the best in CSP and that means the results wont change and it wont "reset" things. If a player like heaton or Spawn or even Irukandji or fr0d or ksharp or method or shaguar or all these players who have quit over the year, wanted to make a return with whatever new game we go for, they wouldn't stand a chance and we would be in the same situation where the same teams are placing high and events are generally less interesting to watch than say circa 2001-2006. CS:GO isn't a good game right. It really isn't. The thing is though, its fixable. When I say fixable, I don't mean that we can make it like 1.6, I mean that we can make it a respectable competitive game by its own right and that's what this community needs. It needs a new Counter-Strike that is competitively viable but still its own game that asks for similar but not the same skill set from 1.6. It needs to be a game where anyone who has an understanding of theory and concepts in 1.6 can make the switch and play but it also needs to be a game that doesn't mimic spray patterns, spam spots or player movement because then we wont be going anywhere. We would be in the same place and there would be no incentive for players to try and overcome players who have a ton more experience. I love to use the example of Street Fighter. With Street Fighter 3, there were a lot of great players. Tokido, Daigo, Gootecks, Justin Wong, just to name a few. When Street Fighter 4 came out, it was a vastly different game but these players remained in the running because of their understanding of the game since Street Fighter 2 and that's great. The thing is though, a ton of players who never even touched a Street Fighter game jumped into the mix and the community grew exponentially. Now instead of having 100-200 people in a room watching an event, you had thousands and even a few more on streams and the scene had expanded in a way unlike before. Players who had quit years ago had returned, new players were competing with these legends from previous games and there is a generally awesome environment. tl;dr: CS is dying but there is hope in CSP and CS:GO. CSP needs support and a community of players willing to play their game and CS:GO needs players who are willing to help make a new competitive game that doesn't mimic 1.6 but instead is a new game entirely.

I agree with everything you said here and CS:GO is without a doubt the only chance we have of seeing counter-strike be relevant in the future. However, if CSP does come out, and it is what everyone has been hoping for, it could possibly give the cs 1.6 players 2-3 more years of the game they love. CS 1.6 is, in my opinion, the best FPS ever made for competitive play and we may never see a game this perfect again. The nuances of it's game-play and the skill it takes to use them correctly are what set it apart from every other game I have played in my 10 or so years of gaming. Crouch hopping, spamable walls, bunny hopping/air acceleration, tapping crouch to peak over boxes, etc are all features that will never been seen again due to the fact that they're not 'realistic'. I know I said it before but being able to use all of these features correctly are what separate the average from the good, the good from the great, and the great from the best. Not to mention the mental aspect of the game is far and above anything else I have seen in an FPS. Although it saddens me to say, I am nearing the end of my gaming years and maybe this is why I feel the way I do. I would rather have 2-3 more years of the great game that we all know and love before I stop gaming rather then have to play Valve's rendition of a source/1.6 fusion that has yet to show me anything enticing (of course that is subject to change). Basically, pump me full of morphine and let me die in peace.

I agree about what you said about CSP. It really needs support. I've tested a beta but there was too many bugs, still, it was really great to play. But yo, "and now Irukandji who is arguably one of the better American players", really??!! I don't follow the US scene, i'm just asking. I've just looked a few match in Irukandji's POV, he doesn't seem to be better than n0thing or pauLy.

Well said, I completely agree. I personally feel that CSP's gameplay is far superior to that of GO at the current time, yet the latter has a far greater chance of success as an esport due to what will be a huge playerbase and reach to the casual players, even across platforms. CSP may succeed as a game in its own right, but unfortunately, I just don't see the players migrating to it like they would to CS:GO. The longevity of a game as an esport relies on a casual audience to feed new players into the community, and I just can't see CSP attracting that right now with CS:GO's release upon us in the coming year.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy that you're helping to bring about. The argument that we should support a game we don't like to fend off a threat that only exists if we stop supporting the game we do like is both cowardly and self-defeating.

I agree, with all the teams mixing nationalities these days I believe n0thing would do well in a top team. Especially since he doesn't have problems speaking English, although it might be hard since I doubt Americans are taught like any European languages (except maybe Spanish) so I doubt he could join any teams that aren't willing to switch to English.

This is hardly a loss for the competition level of current events, but of course it's another sad event for the 1.6 scene. I just wonder how much time the players have even dedicated to cs this year anyway since their results in ESEA have been pretty terrible for EG standards

i think we all people present on hltv.org should make an effort by convincing frod and storm to take n0thing in x6(coz i heard they have some issues with nothing),maybe through any forum,or official facebook, twitter pages of these guys. just an opinion.

That makes no sense, this isn't good for anyone. EG disbanding means one less competitive top team. Na'Vi not going to this tournament meant nothing seeing as how they'd certainly be at multiple others.

"Na'Vi not going to this tournament meant nothing" I don't agree. Now that they probably will gonna participate in GC Kiev, this also means that Na`Vi will have a chance qualify to IEM World Championship, which will start later on this year. No matter that they're defending champs, they still don't have a spot in the finals. And as you might known, IEM World Championship is probably top2 tournament of CS, alongside with ESWC (and maybe even DreamHack too). So... And what about EG is that they have almost been gone from CS World Scene last year. They only have participated in 2 tournaments outside of NA: IEM5 World Championship (Germany) WCG Pan-America (Brazil) Well and they also have participate in: IEM6 Global Challenge New York ESEA That's it. So it's not a big loss for the world scene, maybe for North and South America scenes.

Yeah, EG disband is not good for USA scene, less for european one. EG wasn't a top team nowadays, they lost their chances when lurppis, and frod and storm later left the team.

The teams are assigned by last IEM GC qualifiers, any asian team didn't decided to go to Kiev, so next from IEM GC Kiev quals. was mousesports, after them, Anexis-Na`Vi(Na`Vi won the match to determine 7th place) so they will replace next team who won't come to the tournament

.... just look at the numbers, the people that watch cs, they are in hundreads of thousands. you think cs can die so easily? Yes, it will die, but not in the near future, maybe in some year 2018, but not in the near future, thats for sure. btw, yes i am able to read russian, but not fluently, so its easier for me just to use google translator :P

why 2018 why not 2020 or maybe 2025... or maybe 2012??? i love this game if u will make and sponsor global range tournaments, then maybe... And about numbers what u want me to say? a lot of people watch CS? NO!!! check any starcraft 2 tournament and numbers of people who watch it... I can truly say CS have more vievers then CSS, but thats not enough for Big tournament makers, because game become not global anymore... maybe there is a lot of ppl playing cs1.6 around the world but they play just for fun... and valve cant make much more money out of this game and they will do everythink to replace it with CS:Go if they fail Big tournament makers will find some other shooter game to replace Cs 1.6 Because only europe have a lot of teams and they want all the world participiate in the game... Dont be naive! Yes there will be people who will remain with playing this game, but just for fun, because in tournaments will be some other shooter game, it will be CS:Go or something alse we will see...

It wasn't a glitch on the system, it appears to be user error that prevented them from getting new players on their roster in time. No other teams in our entire league reported any similar issues.
