IEM6 WC replacement cup announced

A replacement cup for the IEM6 World Championship has been announced, set to distribute the two remaining spots.

Earlier this week the groups and teams for the IEM6 World Championship got announced, but two spots were still to be handed out, as several teams declined the invite.

The ESL today announced that a replacement cup will be distributing the two spots, with three teams participating. Going through all the final qualifiers for the three Global Challenges (Guangzhou, New York, Kiev), ESL has come up with three teams, who will duke it out for the spots.

Failing to qualify for New York and Kiev, ESC Gaming has received a last helping hand, ultimately the last chance for the Polish team to qualify. Joining the Poles are French team Electronic Sahara and German team Hardware4u.

The replacement cup will be played on Saturday, starting at 14:00 . The three teams will play a group stage, playing each other once in a best-of-three series. First and second ranked team at the end of the group stage will make it to the IEM6 World Championship. A draw will determine which team will go into which group.

ESL TV and Joe Miller will broadcast all of the matches and therefore no HLTV will be available.

Yeah sure, people think that Danish people kill dolphins and whales like the Japanese do. they make another qualifier just because every1 else that attended the Global Challenges refused the invite! So only 10 of ALL the teams that attended a global challenge confirmed to attend! So it's expected that they decide to hold a new qualifier with teams that never made it to a GC but did fairly well in the qualifiers!

There was no qualifier for the World Championship, basically the Global Challenges were the qualifier for the World Championship an none other teams who attend any GC in Counter-Strike could attend. So should we have done the tournament with 10 teams instead of 12? No.. Therefore we went back to the online qualifiers for all Global Challenges and invited the top8 teams from each final qualifier who weren't qualified yet.

yer the man. tournament of the millenium it is. EDIT : if i can advise you (on the spectators point of view), try not to have too many games in the same time, i believe three is too much, two would be perfect imo, since most of us have the opportunity to watch two games in the same time (laptop + PC, 2 laptops...), and with the quality of the teams and the best-of-three, be sure we'll want to watch ALL games :-)

every team that ever a attended a GC was invited but they all declined it....DTS has no stable 5th, efuture and UMX because of money issues...others have nothing to look for at such a prestigious event :) KNET, VP and Alternate did not do as good in the qualifiers as ESC/eShara/H4U did

It means that the top 2 teams from this final cup will be put in a 'hat' and then extracted from that 'hat' - one will go in group A and the other one in group B. Something like Champions League group stages where they put the big balls in the urn and someone picks them one by one :)

I can comment by this, Sure, I want the polish guys to be there as they were the best team last year. It sucks tho, that they couldn't qualify last year for the stops. Yes, but when having this qualifier. Is somesort of helping hand for those teams and it's nice and good in a way. But, when all the rest of the teams (10 who already qualified for the finals) who have spent money to just go to different places to qualify for the finals, looks like a joke. At least for me. Should have we just skipped those qualifiers. To 'hope' that it will come something like this, so we dont need to spend some money on it? I guess so.

In my opinion, they didn't deserve to qualify for this tournament at all, but since organizers want 12 teams they picked up several teams based on their placements in online qualifiers and you can't do anything about it. The bottom line is that ESL should invite six teams to the WC and fill the remaining spots through qualification. That way you can choose to attend the global challenges for the prestige/prize money, rather than seeing them as "just" qualifiers. They could and should be major tournaments in their own right. Were your expenses not covered by the prize money? And do you realise that winning NY gave you the edge over Navi to become (statistically) the second-best team of 2011? I hardly think it was a wasted effort.

If you would have skipped the qualifiers, then you wouldn't have a chance to play this replacement cup. We've invited the top8 teams from all final qualifiers for a Global Challenge, so it's not an invite because it's ESC or any other organisation, it's because they tried to qualify for a GC, but failed at the end (But at least made it into the top8 of a final qualifier). The ESL always aims to have full tournaments, which means to play the World Championship with just 10 teams wasn't an option for us. We would have liked it as well if 12 out of the 19 teams who attended any GC could have attended the World Championship, but as I said on Twitter it's not our fault that 9 of them couldn't attend/didn't want to attend. I can understand your opinion and respect it, but you also have to understand us that we want a tournament with 12 teams as we've planned and announced it.

While I'm super glad ESC and even eSahara are going to be at WC, its funny how ESL has completely folded to the criticism of their faulty qualification process, and made this a total free pass for eS and especially ESC (who had a TON of people behind them) with giving them h4u as a third team. h4u, while they aren't a particularly bad team, lets be honest, there are a ton of teams that could have made this group 5x more interesting. I don'tcare if this was determined by points or any other reason, this group is so clearcut in who will advance. Once again, im glad that these two teams will be at WC, I'm just sayin...

I don't care if this is right or not... All this years ESC had many problems with stable organisations, unpaid prizes and the most important thing, just look... All most important events are in Sweden, Ukraine, Denmark... all the time!!! We in Poland got only SEC and look how ESC play this tournament. If more tournaments would be in Poland ESC would won all of this thanks to cheering of our crazy fans (we got the best fans in the whole world, just look video from tournaments). Life and e-sport is unfair so i don't care about this. Invite ESC even without any cup cause i wan't to watch them and they deserved this... Pffff. And all this fanboys who say "We are happy that ESC will attend but it's unfair" :DDDD Yeaaa i see like you are happy. If they would invited only ESahara (worse team) you don't even care :D But when it's ESC you are soooo scary that your Swedish team gonna loose to them like always... That's all

Taking into account how ESC usually perform online as far as I see it they are the least favourites to get either of the spots (French teams are always dangerous and German teams usually take advantage of their good internet connections to be able to perform well on mostly any server - as long as the server itself does not suck that is). Still waiting for some bet by the part of Joe though ::)

Two countries being close to each other does not mean that the server won't suck for either of the teams. Not sure about the h4u lineup right now, sorry though it isn't a specific lineup I referred to, didn't I? ;)

h4u lineup should be: rAx, NeOn, fai, acid, makz and maybe esc is playing from germany (but not sure)

And how would you rate that lineup? If ESC have the chance to bootcamp or move to Germany for this Cup I think it would be very possitive for them and help them achieve the best possible result.

It's strange but ESC played from bootcamp GC Kiev quals. and still couldn't beat Anexis.. we'll see

lineup is ok, fai and makz have much experience. rax neon and fai are playing together very long. seems like they are very motivated, i think than can do some damage vs esahara

I must admit ESC are really ultra lucky. They had 4 opportunities to qualify and failed every time. Now they basically get a spot for free. A bit unfair towards the other teams who had to put a lot of time and effort into qualifying. Please don't get me wrong, it is great to see ESC here but a bit unfair imho.

yep but they still have to win vs eSahara (online) its very hard for them online, at LAN they would win much easier :) and H4u is good @ inet too, soo we'll see :)

Well,i think if they passed till these 4 times,the other teams as NA'VI,mousesports and WinFakt could have the same situation imo. But still,it will be good to see ESC on IEM.
