WEM to drop CS - Report

According to cnFrag.com, World eSports Masters has decided to drop its long standing titles Counter-Strike 1.6 and WarCraft 3 in favor of League of Legends and StarCraft 2.

Although no official announcement has been released from the WEM staff, cnFrag has reportedly found out that WEM 2012 will not feature Counter-Strike 1.6 or WarCraft 3 anymore, as both are dropped in favor of newer titles LoL and SC2.

The same organizers used to run World eSports Games which saw four seasons take place in Korea and China, which were won by NoA, Begrip and wNv. Two years later WEM replaced old WEG format, seeing mTw, fnatic and WeMadeFOX crowned as champions.

Last time for CS players to stand at the podium of a WEM event

Most recently in November, the 2011 WEM event was pushed back due to problems in negotiations with local Hangzhou government, although at the time WEM was still believed to feature CS as well.

Organizers of WEM are also in charge of the annual e-Stars Seoul tournament, so it is possible e-Stars might also be making the switch to newer games which would mean dropping CS, as World Cyber Games reportedly did earlier this week.

For people who want to write below that cs dies — if WEM dropped cs that doesn't really mean the death of counter strike, it is still alive... a little bit.

so? Who cares in which tournament cs got that number of views? The main point is that cs is still popular after 13 years and tournaments are dropping it

Starcraft: Brood War is still very popular in Korea, and the graphics of BW are even worse than 1.6.

Well sf is pretty big in pc bangs from what i've understood. It's graphically decent but doesn't take a sick computer to run. Also they are currently playing SF 2 which is a lot more cod - like ( a hella lot more ) than cs like. Also i think it's because it's a korean production and because it's free that it was " pushed " and promoted that way.

Yeah, bw is dead, cs 1.6 is dead. We've heard that a year ago, two years ago, three years ago ... but they are still there. And most BW pro will just retire. Only the less successful B teamers and some A teamers will take a shot at sc2.

BW is still strong, even tho MBCGame was shut down. But the thing is , at the moment Onegamenet ( the tv channel who's hosting proleague and osl ) has to renegociate their license with blizzard, and blizzard will obviously try to force them to get starcraft 2 because SC2 is doing very poorly in korea. The gsl is alive thanks to the foreign viewers only. And SC2 numbers are not really growing, so blizz wants to get OGN to switch over to SC2 but i highly doubt that'll work out as well as they expect it to be. Also noteworthy : BW numbers have been dropping ever since the match fixing scandal involving savior etc ... but not by much. I think with chinese restreams, ogn still gets about a million people to watch especially on important matches such as SKT1 - KT ROLSTER. Just my 2cents

What counts is how many premium viewers they had. You don't make a lot of money off ads, especially with only 80k viewers. No idea what the premium count was for CS, or any other game. But it would be a nice thing to compare.

LoL daily streams have over 100k viewers and SC2 daily streams have about same amount of viewers as cs 1.6 finals. Why would they keep cs 1.6 if they can earn way more by having LoL and SC2 instead.

I know, but when we look at the latest prize money of these events, we can see they won't cut this game at least in 2 years :) But ofc, I don't know what will happen after CS:GO release. Will it replace 1.6 or not, is unknown :)

you don't know that they won't, we've seen wcg and wem cut cs now, and e-stars is likely to do the same. we have no idea whether or not iem and eswc will continue with cs 1.6, and sec is a part of wcg which means it's also out already. what's left? dreamhack's main tourney is sc2 (not that they couldn't include cs on the side), gamegune is likely to have 1.6, and all the CIS events (techlabs, asus, icsc etc) will probably continue with 1.6 for now, but there isn't a lot left as it stands right now.

5k premium watchers > 80k watchers. just saying. iem prem numbers were patheticly low. there's a lot of talk pretending to support cs but there's just so little done. if there was example's you can make some money out of streams for example every single organizer out there would be eager to look it further but no. This scene wants hltv or free 720p streams and guess what? No need to worry bout those anymore.

so i dont have to count that wcg dropped 1.6 because they dropped all the other games? makes no sense, 1.6 has been dropped from 2 big events in the matter of a few days.

esports wont die, the amount of people who watch starcraft 2 and LoL add up to a number that even without 1.6 wouldnt really matter to event organizers, they could even benefit from it because they can put more money in the prize pool when they dont have another game to care about.

Doesn't matter at all, there will be enough people who will buy this game, because Counter Strike/Valve has a big name in the gaming industry. People will watch major tournaments if there will be major tournaments. IEM had more viewers in CS than in SC2, that's correct. But this had something to do with the players in the tournament and how IEM promoted the games. Of course IEM had some of the best players in SC2 on Cebit, but this wasn't enough to get many viewers. WEM is a invite tournament and if they have a big prizepool, they will invite the best players and they will get easily many viewers. And i don't think we need to talk about LoL. There was a new report few days ago that LoL is the first game who has more success than SC1 in Korea ever had. Viewer wise of course. So it isn't a surprise at all even if there were so many viewers at Cebit and on the Streams. Europe isn't Asia. Time difference ;)

CS in Asia is generally a trickier thing. I wouldn't think about it too much. It's not just "CS 1.6" vs CS:S/CS:Go here, in Asia there's also CS:Online. Some piece of crap version, where you need to spend real money to purchase the right to buy certain guns ingame. For example--> You could have 16K in CS, but still be unable to buy deagle/awp. Unless you've already spent money to purchase "the ability to buy a certain weapon". Where did this come from? Some south korean company, that dabbles in the micropayment model for online games. Some of the lan cafes in Taiwan don't even have steam lan accounts, you have to use your own steam account. I would not expect anything to change in 1.6's favor on the Asian end. The company behind this, Nexon Corporation, is doing extremely well.

IEM and TechLabs are over. GameGune, CopenhagenGames and Dreamhack are the only confirmed events for 2012. ASUS Cup and Adepto Lan for teams from east europe. It's not worth to send a team from Sweden or Germany for example to a tournament where you won't even get 5k for first place. ESWC? Nothing confirmed yet and like we know from the past year, they like it to change their gamelist short before the mainevent. But we will see it in the future.

Well, after this news I can only smile at the comments that say "CS IS NOT DEAD" It's almost dead as a cybersport discipline. As the game CS won't die because games just cannot die. I mean people still play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and other old games. But as a cybersport discipline it is dead: No support from organizers -> no sponsors -> no money for professional players -> no professional players -> no cybersport. Simple as that.

No SEC, WCG and WEM for CS. That's sad. Atm there are only three confirmed events for this year. CopenhagenGames, Dreamhack Summer and GameGune :D If eStars also change their games, i wouldn't be surprised if the last top teams will lose their contracts for the second half of the year. Don't know if one Event (DreamHack Winter) would be enough for 6 month for organisations like the G7 teams. I doubt that. Maybe teams from east europe would send their teams to smaller events like NaVi and M5 are doing it. But i don't see a reason for SK and fnatic to stick to their teams in the second half of the year. Well, we will see.

i don't believe things like that. How can they trust CS:GO when all community hates it? They shouldn't expect to reach same viewers numbers with CS:GO. It's simple. drop CS1.6 or continue with it.

Most of the CS scene hates it in its current form. But as an organizer you want something to grow with, and CS:GO is a game to grow with. You can attract new audience, and I bet sponsors would be more pleased with a game that actually needs all the hardware they are advertising with. The sponsors would prob be more satisfied with 20k viewers for CS:GO, than 80k for 1.6. CS is a great game, I try to watch it even though I'm more of a SC2 junkie. Unfortunately gameplay isn't everything. BW is a better game than SC2 in its current state, but SC2 was the future and everyone knew it. It did help quite a bit that the entire western BW scene was dead. In the end what would make the most difference is to give feedback to valve, and you might end up with a CS:GO that you might enjoy, even if you'll always miss 1.6.

So stupidly. Sponsors paying viewers' numbers. IEM dropped Quake but continued with CS1.6(Check the game's graphics) Actually no one can say LoL has nice graphics too. It's impossible to accept 20k to 80k. Sponsors aren't stupid. Yesterday i bought an i7 but that wasn't because I'm just playing CS1.6. Do you think hardware are just there for 1.6? LOL

I REALLY CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS. SOMEONE CAME AND SAID "CS WILL DIE" AND NOW ALL PEOPLE BELIEVE IT. THEY CAN'T SEE THAT CS HAD TOO MUCH PLAYERS AND FANS ? WHY THEY DO THIS ? THEY DROP CS FROM THEIR TOURNAMENTS CAUSE SOMEONE SAID CS IS DYING. HOLY, REALLY CANT UNDERSTAND.

Don't know the situation too well, it seems 1.6 having lesser and lesser events. CSP feels good actually, wonder if someone like ESL could back up the idea of making much more better game than cs;go for now. Would be nice to hear an opinion from someone like Carmac, whats happening in his mind if CS:GO replacing or not. I think they could have a chance for community switching or at least some of it trying Promod competitive way.

I've been playing CS since 2000, I've been to WCG seven times for New Zealand, I've lived and breathed CS for a long time (to the extreme some times), I owe a lot of my current working opportunities due to my involvement with CS and gaming and I'd never thought I'd be saying this, but I think it's right that CS 1.6 "dies" and gets dropped from competitive event calendars. I really doubted CS:GO the first time I played it because I had a closed mind, but especially within the latest patch, you can see that Hidden Path are making strong improvements and progress, and more importantly than anything, seem to "get it". If CS:GO is released and doesn't have to contend with splinter tournaments and groups of 1.6 hanger ons, it has a greater chance of being embraced and supported. The Counter-Strike team FPS format provides a unique spectator and players experience and viewing excitement, while SC2 and LoL are riding their waves, now is good a time is any for us to stand behind the new CS developers and make sure that the title has everything it needs to work for another 10+ years, now and into the future. There are experiences and events that I'll never forget, emotionally I'm so connected to CS 1.6 and what is provided me and my team-mates over the years, the good places, the events, the people - while I may miss out on doing some of these things as a player now, I feel that it's crucially important for CS to evolve and ensure it's ongoing future. Take your energy spent feeding back what you don't like about the game, and start to get the @csgo_dev attention on twitter, or on reddit, or on the official steam forum boards. Have your say and help make an impact upon the games direction, and hopefully before too long, we'll all be seeing an excellent format of Counter-Strike back on the competitive touring calendar. If you remember me (or parallax/New Zealand) from any WCG's or trips, say hi, it would be good to reminisce. Cheers @simcore

I agree with most of what you say, but i disagree that hidden path are starting to show strong improvements, the game is still heavily lacking a good skill ceiling and they seem adamant to increase it. If they fix movement and recoil then i will agree that they are heading in the right direction. And by "fix" i dont mean make it like 1.6, i mean just give it some differentiation to show a skill difference in someone who has played the game for thousands of hours and someone who has played the game for five hours because at the moment the skill cap is reached ever so easily.

As long as there's only one tournament with cs1.6, it's not dead. Period.
