WCG to drop CS 1.6 - Report

According to rakaka, another major tournament organizer World Cyber Games is going to drop Counter-Strike 1.6 as a game title.

Although no official word from the WCG camp has been announced so far, rakaka claims that highly informed sources have told them the olympics of gaming are not going to feature Counter-Strike 1.6 in 2012.

Originally World Cyber Games was rumoured to be dropping PC games altogether and focusing on the mobile platforms, but those rumors were eventually proved wrong by WCG's announcement.

Was WCG 2011 the final event to host a tournament in CS 1.6?

At the time it was assumed that WCG would still feature Counter-Strike 1.6 due to the event being held in China where CS is still regarded as a popular title.

Should WCG go ahead with dropping Counter-Strike 1.6 as a game title, they would be the second major event organizer to do so within a short time frame following Intel Extreme Masters' announcement earlier today.

It's ridiculous. In this year IEM event, we had almost double viewers more than every single other game combined together, even Joe Miller confirmed that. The situation is bad in America, but not that much in Asia. The CPL is probably coming up with a minor event this year in China. It's not dead yet, at least not for the following two years or so. Yes, of course that the sponsors are pushing the organization to drop it, but it is simply not enough, even so there are going to be more tournaments on the way, such as ESWC and Dreamhack. There is no competitive FPS game currently that can replace it and without a FPS game, there will be a huge lack of viewers for sure.

Ppl don`t play 1.6 cuz there are big tournaments such as wcg or iem. Nearly half of cs players even don`t know anything about tournaments. This can only mean some pause for professional gamers. Nowdays people in the gaming industry only chase for profits and 1.6 isn`t profitable for them, so they will try to replace it with GO or something else. 1.6 community now can only wait for some changes in the industry.

How is that obvious, were you included in the discussions that come around which games are chosen for IEM and WCG? Are you included as a Sponsor of the event? There are so many factors that come into this... wake up it's 2012, CS1.6 cannot, and I mean cannot keep going for ever. It was clear that IEM were going to drop it after the last event, as it looked like it was the last hurrah. And as soon as WCG went with the decision of going mobile only, that was a clear decision made by the sponsors (ie Samsung). Gamegune and Dreamhack mb keeps on going for some another years (perhaps!). e-Stars and ESWC didnt mentioned anything 100% (what ive seen) but most likley they're dropping CS 1.6 aswell for good after this year. If CS:GO succeed with its mission 100%, CS 1.6 is done with the international scene to like 95% (?), i guess. Then only some "4fun"- LANs with minor cash-pools involved once in a while in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Ukraine, Poland and mb Russia, Finland, Spain, France, Balkan countries and so will be held, if so. Cuz the truth is CS 1.6 is no longer supported by a wider global scene anymore, its been a pretty long time since TBH. The very very most major part of todays yuoths which playing pc-games dont choose to get devoted with a game like CS 1.6.
