SK Gaming not sent to GameGune

Alexander "TheSlaSH" Müller has to HLTV.org confirmed that the German-based organization won't be sending the Swedish Counter-Strike 1.6 team to GameGune next week in Bilbao, Spain.

After it had come to our attention that SK Gaming was nowhere to be found on the list of attending teams for this year's edition of GameGune, we contacted Alexander "TheSlaSH" Müller, the Managing Director of SK Gaming, to get clarification on the matter.

Müller confirmed SK won't send the team to GameGune and furthermore stated:

"After what happened at Dreamhack and especially the way the team prepared for this tournament, we approached the Gamegune tournament in a different way than previous years. We don't see the investment of going there is worth it.

A lot of tournaments have been called the last one for 1.6 so far. Among those a couple we participated in. To me it was ESWC 2011. This was also the last title missing at our end, therefore we feel like we have closure on the whole CS topic no matter what."

SK won the 2011 edition of the Spanish tournament, beating ESC Gaming to win the 12,000€ first place prize. Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund & co. will this year have to watch the event unfold from their respected residences.

SK won't have a chance to defend the title from 2011

Asked on the future of SK's CS division Müller said the following: "Remains to be seen"..

By the looks of it, it very much seems like SK is closing the chapter of their Counter-Strike 1.6 division, probably eyeing on how CS:GO will unfold, but for now those are only speculations.

Stay tuned as we will be sure to update you once more information should become available.

To expensive to run a 1.6 team because of salaries and everything. Im guessing thats why getright and forest are trying out cs:go because they still want to get paid to play. And they know SK will move into that market eventually.

It doesn't change the fact they stuck with CS for 13 years while most organizations came and went. SK is considered the oldest organization in CS currently that's still in 1.6. At least in big organizations, I don't know about smaller ones.

Oh yes, because it unbelievable to lost motivation in something where you in for years. Oh yes, we never heard about losing motivation in CS. So this statement should be repeated many times. But the real question is that if you don't believe it, what was the reason of his outage? Because if you know it was a lie, and that's why you are joking on it always you should know what is the truth? So? I'm very curious now...

Well I am still gonna play 1.6. It is not like all the online leagues are going to shut down over night just because SK ain't going to GameGune. 1.6 will live on, not on top competitive level, but you can still play online/small LAN tournaments, leagues and have fun.

Not really. The biggest teams will also shut down because there arent big lan tournaments and eventually the smaller events will also drop cs 1.6 out and include GO if sucessfull. If not, hello LoL, dota 2 and SC2 for the next 10 years.

I am nowhere near the skill level to be actually threatened by the end of Counter Strike. The leagues/servers within my skill range will live on, ergo I am totally not afraid of it. I am too old to get pro anyway, so why bother? You (and hundreds of others) might saw yourself standing on a box, holding trophy for being the best CS team in WCG/ESWC/IEM/etc., but face it, you wouldn't make it even if you could. I am at least not living in denial and false hope that I will one day surpass f0rest :) I'm gonna miss watching them play, though, no argument there..

I dont think you understand... Every league will shut down. And even if the higher leagues shut down and yours dont, the better players will take your place on those leagues you play. Cs will be dead... You could still play some mixes of course, but who wanna play a dead game? dafuqqq, i never said i wanted to become a pro like them.. besides, even if i wanted and have the skill, i wouldnt want it because in portugal living because of gaming is impossible.

They will, but it will take few more years... Look at other old games. Unreal Tournament - people still play it. Quake (no matter which number) - still has active players. Wolfenstein:ET - people still play it. Diablo 2 (not a competitive, but anyway) - still played by many. It will take ages before CS will disappear. I am really not afraid of it. The community around CS is fkin' huge, much bigger than any other FPS game had and will ever have. Players won't give up on it so easily ;)

"every league will shut down," no, esea will always support 1.6, I'm sure esl will host things, cevo will be around forever, online leagues won't go away because they have consistent people playing in the league.

let's make a comparison here just for the laughter. Imagine you are a professional football player. Imagine everything goes well, but all of a sudden football gets dropped on World Cup, Olympics, Euro, everywhere. Ooops! Now, to stay a professional football player, you have to start playing basketball, because it shares a part of its name. Same logic, again very stupid one, because according to you, to stay a professional Counter Strike 1.6 player you gotta play Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

Haha. Funny. Not. Nobody said they have to switch to dota2/quake/sc2. If someone said that then your comparassion would be accurate. This way it is really bad comparasion. Basketball and football have nothing in common, while cs:go and cs are almost the same game. If you are pro in cs1.6 it pretty much means that you would be good in cs:go. On the other hand if you are pro in cs1.6 it is highly unlikely that you are any good in dota2 (unless you are g0g1).

I get your point and I agree, I just don't think people should switch to CS:GO just to keep on playing Counter Strike game even if they don't like it. It is like if your Lamborghini Gallardo stopped working, so you switch to one of Lamborghini tractors just to be faithful to the brand. I don't get it :)

They have a bit because of SK, do not train in some tournaments, what I mean is that it does not mean they'll end up with Section cs 1.6, are saying that it is not worth taking a team that goes beyond the think will win it all and have no results, I bet that the organization is doing this to train them in the next tournament to win it all.

To be respectful to the game that brought this organization to where it is right now and send the team to probably the last tournament in CS just like fnatic is doing.

I also do believe fans won't disappear and 1.6 will continue, at least at local.Just wondering what is going to happen with hltv.org if the scenario would be bad 4 CS:GO.Meaning of question above was will it be worth to do coverage for you.Doing all this is also just some kind of work, isn't it?Or is it just your personal interest without earning any money at all?

It's sad, but from a business point of view, it makes sense. Spending the money to send 5-6 people to another country for the CHANCE to win a relatively small amount of money isn't very smart or profitable. Especially when you consider, as he put it, the team's recent results.

The money earned by the teams as prize money isn't the organisation's source of income. Their source of income is the sponsorship they have from various companies that are advertised by the players.

It's still a bad decision to go financially. Even more so if your source of income is based on sponsorship. Why risk them performing badly again and having the sponsors drop them?

Does it annoy me? Sure it does, but it seems theres just no way around it. I'm not so concerned and honestly believe you are very wrong. It's quite obvious everyone has their own opinion about CS:GO, hell I hated it when I played it when the beta came out, but with that said, the game is not out yet, so lets just wait and see what the final product will be like.

We should really concentrate on CSPromod not that shitty cs:go. As professional cs players have said they are not gonna play with it not to mention the community that will really not countinue playing with it. Everybody who has their own interest keep saying that come oooon save cs 1.6 by choosing cs:go... If cs1.6 could be saved we would be saving it cs 1.6 itself not a completely different game.. Cs 1.6 was good and perfect while it lasted but everything ends at some point... Most likely cs 1.6's time has come to an end and we should accept it and close it and after that everybody can decide what they wanna choose. I.e. I would never pick cs:go it completely looks like source to me a game i really hate. And as i have noticed many of the people think the same way.

Every single game there will ever be made will be worse than CS 1.6, but if we want to keep FPS alive as a eSport title, they NEED to switch to CS:GO or CSP, but since there's no tournaments in CSP yet, it will most likely be CS:GO.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the shit organisation behind SK will throw the CS players like garbage out of the door. Their LOL team is losing game after game, they only have one good player and that is MC, and they cannot fuck with him as he could easily fuck with them back, he is the one that brings money to them atm. By the looks of it, they could very easily close the orga and move on to a different chapter. Not like MC will have problems in finding a new organisation to represent. It would make me so happy to see this shit organisation wipe out from the eSports scene. Not to mention that Get_right has been seen lately attending SC2 quallifiers, f0rest LOL's all the time, Delpan's "motivation" is again a problem.

Well yeah, CS is dead now. You know shits bad when the biggest name in CS is closing their team. Now you can choose how you wanna react to this as a community. 1. Act like immature kids and bash CS GO and the tournaments that closed the game OR.. 2. Make CS one community again and give CS GO a try 3. Quit counter-strike and say cs 1.6 was the only CS q.q @ll 0th3r v3rs10n$ suck and kill the fps scene and cry into your pillow every night.

Like any company or organization, SK looks to profit. A CS 1.6 team is a lot of money to send around traveling due to it being a 5-man squad. Even in games like SC2 where it's just one person, some people will be cut just because a few months of disappointing play. I wouldn't be surprised at this point in esports seeing the CS 1.6 released and SK taking a new path either CS:GO or a different title.

SK has won $10,000 dollars few months ago, they could've sent them to the probably one of the last 1.6 events... Switching to the other title is highly unlikely,to be good at SC2 you must really have big skill, just as pro SC2 players are former BW/WC3 players. You can't just transfer yourself to the other game and expect to be at top in the few months. You need years for that. That remains for the LoL too.

I totally understand Alex, I mean GTR has played a lot CS:GO and f0rest as well... Face, Delpan and RobbaN don't seem to play that much anymore. And I think it's really not fun to watch CS without good strategies or very high skill-level.

It's the same game! Some maps (nuke!!! and train - community will fix that) and weapons (recoil) need improvement, but the movement is getting better and better with every patch... play it and u will feel some cs-magic. But no doubt... 1.6 is the king and will never be matched by any game. Even NEO (bashed it once in a interview) likes it now and plays with GTR and f0rest... and when it gets popular I will enjoy the CS-comebacks of organisations like mTw and mouz.

In the later stages of CS scene SK organization never really care about much but only to have f0rest in their lineup and to win ESWC. They got both and they do not care much now. f0rest and GTR will certainly shift to CS:GO if seeing current inclinations.

TheSlaSh is not the problem here. I don't know why you say he doesn't give a fuck about the fans when its actually the players the ones who are not practicing and training for 'the last big fucking tournament'. TheSlaSh did the right thing here.

half right half wrong. yes theslash is not the problem. no the players aren't not practicing for this tournament; the article says they didn't practice for the last tournament, not that they were not practicing for gamegune.

Well, the article don't say if they were practicing for GameGune. We don't know if they really were, but I would say they didn't, they didn't practice for DH (event in their own country), why would they train for GameGune?

sad but i guess SK the organisation feel that they dont get their moneys worth to send 5 people to an event that is not considered a major and dosent have that much attention and marketing value. dunno how the players contracts is but would be cool if some other organisation would pick them up and send them.

My post is addressed to the morons: If you are happy that the SK team is being disbanded, you obviously don't understand the impact that this will have. SK is one of the oldest organizations, CS is now dead. What a fucking shame.

CS was dead before this new. SK has been expending their time in a different game that what they are supposed to be paid for play (and win). Not sending them and closing the 1.6 division (if they finally do) is the most logical solution for this situation.

Was wondering why the fuck the even got sent to Dreamhack. That was just sad. Cant believe they dont step it up for the money even... Fnatic wont both the Swedish championship and Dream Summer, it was probably the last time that a team will win like (was it something like?) 30,000€ in one place (two tournaments though). Really not professional in my mind.. Very childish acting by the SK players. Deserved the stay-at-home-playing-cs-go punishment. Have fun losing in 100€ online tournaments in CSGO.
