$45k CS:GO tourney at DreamHack

DreamHack has announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as one of their tournament games with a whopping prize purse of 300,000 SEK (~$45,000 USD) and sixteen teams.

Traditionally held at Elmia in Jönköping, DreamHack Winter will take place on November 22-25th in Sweden and will once again feature a massive Counter-Strike tournament, although for Global Offensive instead of 1.6 this time. Whether a CS 1.6 tournament is also planned is still unknown.

The tournament will be open to sixteen teams, found via direct invites, online and LAN qualifiers, as well as the on-site BYOC qualifier.

As usual, the tournament will kick off with a group stage that will feature four groups of four teams each and see the amount of teams split in half as only eight will progress to the playoffs.

From there on out it will be a single elimination best-of-three bracket with the following prize distribution, suggesting that no third place decider will once again be played.

DreamHack Winter 2012 prize distribution:

1. 150,000 SEK (~$22,500)
2. 75,000 SEK (~11,250)
3. 25,000 SEK (~$3,750)
4. 25,000 SEK (~$3,750)

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will come out next week and with teams such as Ninjas in Pyjamas already preparing for the events to come, you can expect HLTV.org to be on-site in Jönköping to provide you with full coverage of the event.

Well was inevitable, just unfortunate so much good features are lost, but theres a chance for improvements as well. Just hope they get the headshot feeling back from 1.6, nothing can beat 5 headshots the way it was shown in 1.6 =] Other than that I think CS:GO isn't all that bad, more 1.6 players just need to give it a chance. Then again the map changes are not for the better in most cases (specially train) and so much random stuff in it blocking the path yet not good enough for cover. Also some of the most awesome wallbang spots are gone. Thats what made CS unique, CS:GO kinda made it just another shooter with bomb plant/defusal =[

I might wait more 5 years to play CSP instead CS:GO. I just don't like to watch a CS:GO match and I tried it a lot of times. I bet that this tournament even I that's the first one, won't get the same viewers such as 1.6

Why would i play CSP when CS 1.6 is way better? CSP will never be same level as CS 1.6 and btw CS:GO > CSP.

Yes CS:GO > CSP but not in terms of gameplay and wether its acutally fun to play or not. CS:GO > CSP in players and sponsors CSP > CS:GO gameplay !

You cant conclude the matter till it happens. I think many people will watch CS:GO match with curiousity, count me in, and some may find aspects of CS:GO interesting enough to fascinate them to play. I love CS 1.6, and it's never ever gonna change. But the fact we cant deny is that nothing is forever, we have to move on, and so does CS 1.6. Why dont we help developers improving game such as CSP, CSGO so that those games can not only reach the CS "1.6 standard" we already set but furthermore, will be a better game than CS 1.6?

Source players are mostly 12 year olds that just play casually and dont follow the scene. (steriotype but true) I saw some CSS g final (if only i remembered wich one) betwen verygames and TT.dragons that had 1.800 spectators. I [overdrev] when i said 5000 o.o CS:GO spectators: 80% 1.6 players? CS:GO players: 80% source players? CS:GO players: 80% kids? we dont know anything yet :)

"Source Players are mostly 12 year olds that just play casually and dont follow the scene." Did you really just say that, I mean really? The majority of Source players are now well over 18 +. I'm 24, and then the majority of top players are well into their 20's. The casual scene generally follows the same pattern (hell there are still some 40 - 50 year olds who play the game).

Having been to many CSS LANs in the UK and knowing a massive community called Middle Aged Gamers and their rough ages there are still quite a few 40 - 50 year olds involved in the game.

Thats not what i mean. IMO only think they will host CS:GO but what i meant is that i predict: 10k specators from 1.6 community and 5k specators from source community that will watch the CS:GO g final

The game isn't even released and its already got a major tournament for $45k. The only reason why source "died" or never got as big was because it was competing with 1.6 in its glory days, now that 1.6 is out of the way CS GO will take over and be thriving in a years time imo. If 1.6 was in the state it is now back when source was released i bet source would have gotten a lot bigger.

I agree. One other reason why source didnt get succesfull was because when it got released.. damn it was shit back then. The way source is now, it's actually a really good game and I know pretty much all cs 1.6'ers will dissagree but it's much better than CSP.

According to your logic "since the game has a 45k tourney, it must be popular" The reason a 45k tourney has been launched is to increase the popularity forcefully, to forcefully make the 1.6rs move to GO 1.6 had large prize money BECAUSE it was popular. Not the other way round

Thats not my logic, im replying to an idiot that is using his heart and thinking the game will be dead in a year, yet clearly people are showing interest in it before its even released and BEFORE its even popular, such as this tournament, such as NiP they believe this game WILL become big or popular. How the hell do you deduce from my statement that i think the game is popular. instead if you had good logic you would see it as showing that this game has promise and people are getting behind it. and forcefully try and move 1.6ers? haha, wake up, 1.6 is competitively dead. No one needs to try and move 1.6ers. and your quote, "1.6 had large prize money BECAUSE it was popular. Not the other way round" So what? whats your point? this is a good thing are you seriously taking the stance that CS GO tournaments with nice prize pools is a bad thing? please enlighten me how aside from the fact that you are so butt hurt because you don't like the game and its just another realisation that 1.6 is that much more dead and gone which makes you bitter?

navi didnt dominate (domination=undisputed top1) since 2010, wake up spanish dude, its almost 2013 now. Last years of Counter-Strike 1.6: Swedish team in fnatic dominated 2009 Swedish team in SK dominate 2011 Swedish team in fnatic dominate 2012 Whenever CS dies, it will be remembered as a game mastered by swedes.

Hahahaha!! You are clueless, cuz of to much slavic fanboiesZZism. By some means it was a split between SK and ESC year of 2011 but more objective voices choose SK of 2011. however navi wasnt in that top1 race, and not since 2010, only by ukr fan kiddies. You are the first stated such thing like navi split the top1 of 2011 with SK or even golden5. And btw the topelite veterans of CS like cArn, lurppis, dsn and objective alltimers like that who played them all just told cogu is the best awpwer ever. So that gives us top1 alltime awp: 1: cogu 2: harder 3: nut 4: to 5: crack live with it, deal with , face it

no way those 3 teams were better than fnatic 2009. navi 2010 is arguable but fnatic 2009 is simply top1/2 of the best teams ever.
2012-08-14 06:48
0
You're clueless... 1) Na`Vi in 2010 beat the money record that ever was in CS 1.6. 2) Na`Vi in 2010 won 3 of 3 biggest events in the year and beat the record, because there was not team created who can win 3 of 3 biggest events in the year, except NAVI - WCG, IEM, ESWC. 3) 4 players of the team were in top20, 3 were in top5 and markeloff was top1 player of the year. And now about 2011: 1.Na`Vi/sk/ESC they all were equal... But the luck was at ESC's side, so ESC was named the team of 2011. but i'd say it was very arguable. fnatic in 2009 for sure were not better than NAVI in 2010, Na`Vi were monsters in 2010, and in 2011 they were monsters too, always top1-2-3, for sure with some mistakes. And at last you forgot mTw too, in 2008 they were better than fnatic in 2009 too. Just compare NA`Vi > fnatic mTw > fnatic SK 2003 > fnatic fnatic = SK 2011

2010 the prizepool of tournaments had its peak, and dont forget tournaments like arbalet. But ofc 2010 navi dominated who said something else, but they have been top1 1 year of their 3 years of existence, so take it a bit easy with your false arguements, however whenever CS dies it will be remembered as a game mastered by swedes. Did that hurt to much to hear you have to cry the world another ocean.. poor one eyed slavic ppls.

I didn't even play CSS when CGS was alive.. Never liked the game and therefor didn't play it. Who the fuck watches a game he doesn't play himself? Or do you think I would have played CSS although I didn't enjoyed it because there was an almost non-existent chance to participate on a ridiculous non-sense tournament with high prize money? To answer your question: 1.6

People like you simply don't understand the fact that 99,9% of all people just play the game they enjoy the most. Ridiculous high prizes may attract some pro-players to switch, but the average player who will never attend on such a tournament won't switch to an other game if he doesn't enjoys playing it.

Theres 1.5 servers on xfire and people still play it, but guess what, pro scene is dead. The same will happen with 1.6, eventually steam will drop it, and then i will see how you will enjoy it dude.

Yeah, that will happen for sure. It's sad, but that's how it is. Anyway: I will never play a game I don't like. If you play a game you don't like just because of some prize money (which you probably will never win), you're wasting your time. Btw: If it would be only about prize money, you would be an idiot to play CS anyway.

Now you say that CGS was a joke, right. People watched it on tv, they picked Source over 1.6 for no reason? It went down because they had a disagreement with witch channel will stream it in season 3.

Yeah, for an 13 old boy who didn't know anything about CS, it must have been huge. From the CS community's point of view it was a huge joke. Everyone watched the first games, realized it's a huge fucking freak-show and boring as hell, and turned off.

+1. these kids are dumb. CGS was the worst fail ever. it was hyped up in the beginning because no one ever seen a video gaming show before. i remember watching the matches on tv and it was so dumb. the pros were just excited thinking they were finally going to become "famous" haha. the crowd looked bored watching nerds and geeks play video games haha. i remember that kid "sunman" coming out everytime with that gay ass teddy bear. wtf?? how old was that guy. makes me feel ashamed for even watching CGS at the time. cs:go will fail like this because the game is so boring to spectate. less viewers = no more invested tournaments.

1. Don't talk like a twat, kid. 2. If you want a lot of European viewers you should better care about Germany since it's (beside Russia) the European country with the highest population. 3. The organisation behind the CGS was American, but the tournament was international. There were teams from Germany, the UK, France, ...

Source was picked instead of 1.6, because Valve didnt want to give the license to show 1.6 on TV, they only gave the license to show CSS. That's why Source was chosen instead of 1.6 on the CGS

CS 1.6 will never die. But competetive scene is at its twilight for sure. There are no doubts that the major sponsors are all looking at CS:GO. I bet that in a year of two every one fill forget 1.6. And GO is the thing we need to save the competetive FPS games scene. LoL, Dota and Starcraft are already far ahead of all the other FPS titles in terms of spectators...

IT'S NOT EVEN RELEASED YET! Jesus f***ing christ! How the hell can you say a game is shit when you haven't played the final verson of the game, which btw won't be the final verson seeing that Valve will contiune to update and support it.. Heck, you probably haven't played the beta since day one, or even touched it..

I think this is great news for the FPS community. The FPS community hasn't had a game that we could call the premier FPS game in a long time. This could be our moment. Maybe we can relive the CPL days with huge prize pools like this $50,000 one at dreamhack. We need to rally together guys and despite what we may think about the game itself, we can get used to it and to be honest, as someone who has had the beta since it first came out, the game has gotten a lot better. It may not be on the standards of 1.6 and may never will be, we can still unite to bring back some life into the FPS community. We've been overshadowed for a while now by League of Legends and Starcraft 2 which both boast much greater sponsors, events, and prizes than Source or 1.6 combines. Both of those games gather viewerships of over 100,000 people at their biggest tournaments and have prize pools of over $25,000 at most of the larger events. But it's important to note that our HLTV's used to have those numbers and the old tournaments for CS used to boast those prize pools 7-8 YEARS ago. This is a great event but it's also a greater step forward for the FPS gaming community. Competitive level 1.6 and Source are dying out or have died out in most places around the world with very few events these days. The movement is towards GO and while sponsors and tournaments help, success is in the hands of the viewers.

Unless they fix the crap gameplay, not gonna happen. I think it will be like CSS, with CGS, huge prizes in the begining, then everyone will forget it because of the poor gameplay.

I think there's a possibility of this happening but it's kind of like Starcraft 2, in my opinion, where the Brood War pros (who are much more highly respected) have now decided to move over because they realize 2 important things: 1. Brood War is a 12 year-old game and it's dying competitively and 2. Starcarft 2 is successful and has money in it. I think Source & CGS didn't do it right because they were trying to replace a still living and successful game that was 1.6 that had steam left. But it seems like 1.6 AND source have reached their ends and support has been dropping out even without the introduction of CS:GO. The FPS community has lost interest with the gaming world and many people now just watch LoL or SC2. Local 1.6 and Source leagues still exist but internationally, it has really died out. I think it is time for a new FPS game and the one we're presented with is CS:GO. The timing is right. I also think that the gameplay is coming along. Of course, it's a work in progress and it's a lot slower than we want but I hope eventually they get it right. I'm more positive than negative about progress because I've seen the progress that has been made so far. It's been getting better and I think more is on the way. Remember, it's not supposed to be a replica of 1.6. I think that's a big concept that people aren't able to grasp. It is undeniable that 1.6 was successful because of the game that it is but times have changed.

It's not supposed to be a 1.6 replica, but is it supposed to offer at least close gameplay I guess? CS 1.6 has the best FPS gameplay ever imo. What's the point of playing a game that is less fun and has worse gameplay? Just because it's new? Because it has better graphics? I don't think the mass (very young, americans, console owners, low skilled in general) will stop to play their CoD or BF3 to play this new CS, a lot of 1.6 players seems to dislike the way the game is going, but for sure almost every CSS player will play and enjoy it.

Ahhh i just watch one clip from youtube to refresh my memory about how it looks & gameplay ... the commentator said something true about CS:GO ... it's too difficult ... too detailed ... Cs 1.6 is the best FPS , because of it's simplicity ... In other hand ... everyone here compare CS:Go & cs 1.6 ... and they are different games ... You see Cs:Go is not Cs 1.7 or Cs 2.0 ... this is not some kind of continue to the old game, so no point of compare them ... GL HF & be more respectful to others!

We will know once DH release news about a CS 1.6 tournament taking place or not. They shouldn't wait for too long though as those tournaments are 'at the doors' and it would be strange to host a CS 1.6 tournament in order to get a spot for a CS:GO one.

All those haters are not even real haters, all of them are just afraid of sth like a new Counter Strike era. And every single complaint about how terrible and unplayable game GO is simply does not give a lot of sense, because GO is still in beta mode and the purpose of GO is to make a bit different game, not just same like 1.6 with better graphics.Sponsors ale looking for new opportunities and new faces.Except recoil, which is nowadays bit weird, it IS pretty good game.

i agree, but recoil should be fixed soon, it feels really weird, the crosshair doesn't seem to be as "responsive" as it was in 1.6 (or 1.3, 1.5), it feels like playing COD or some other game, but not counter strike at all.

I have never played COD or generally console games at all co I can't compare. It's just how GO feels to me.I understand why people are so stressed about it, I am taking it easy because I am not playing Counter Strike anymore. But from from my point of view (guy who played active 6 years), it is on a good way.

Kinda expected if you ask me, anyway there's no reason to blame them to create this tournament with such a prizemoney. It's great to have a tournament like DreamHack, they're supporting almost everything in e-Sports

:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Like i care, Valve is a trash company :P They fucked up with DotA 2 (copied fully from IceFrog), they fucked up with CS:S and now CS:GO. They had both games fully made, they just needed to make graphics a bit better, maybe 1 or 2 changes, but nothing serious. Yet, they failed @ that. I say Valve is the only company that can do that. It's math! GOOD GAME (DOTA, CS) + VALVE = TRASH!

The best GAME? :DDD This guy have never played DotA and now he speaks how DotA 2 is good game? LOOOL, there are so many bad things Valve did to DotA 2, making DotA better than DotA 2 :D Ironic, yes! Get informed before u post stupid things like this. Stupid noobs, GO play cs:go, retard.

she and i play dota since 2005. valve did a great job porting dota on the source engine, its like perfectly done. there are slightly a few bugs left cause its a beta but u can track everything on the checklist at dota2 developer forum. also dota 2 is way more competitive than wc3 dota, with its stand alone game, those big tournaments today and stuff like spectator mode, dota TV and so on. the game went from a wc3 mod to a stand alone TOP esport game now. also the skillplay is way higher since u can pull people of the highgrounds etc. best game of all times <3

GAMEPLAY!!! other stuff you mentioned is imortant but it losses all meaning if the gameplay is not as it should be...

the gameplay is 1:1 the same as in dota, they didnt change anything besides graphics and the fog (field of view) feels slightly different. not really noticiable when u played like 50 games u dont feel a difference to wc3 dota anymore. also all pro gamers are in dota 2 now and say the game is better than ever before, even cause it makes way more things possible with the new engine and makes the game a bit harder to master, cause u have more ways to outplay ur enemy. but ye you know better than the pros, some random dude on hltv.org haha :D i bet ure like one of those 30 year old fags that are to slow to learn something new nowdays and stick to their old stuff and say its the best :D get some skill, play a few games and u will love dota 2 as all the other pros do and be a part of the soon biggest esport community

same hero/item names with new graphics and models don't make it better than the original dota... what is wrong with ppl nowadays the main aspect of a game is fun and challenging gameplay not how it looks. Yes DOTA and CS need a facelift and tweaks but not at the cost of changing their unique gameplay (some aspects should be fixed). Icefrog didn't make the engine of wc3... Neither did he came up with dota,he took over the project, updated, fixed, balanced it. He deserves all the credits for making it popular because he worked hard on it,with monthly updates. But he worked on dota in the wc editor and that is not as hard as making a gamme from scratch -_- he's probably more of a consultant than a dev at valve.

that the hero models and item models are not the same as in wc3 dota is not valves fault !!!!! its blizzards fault. also icefrog is the main head creator of dota 2, he gives all the advices, values etc. valve is just creating the engine and ports icefrogs thoughts on the source engine inform yourself when u flame the developers here, otherwise u look like a retard fact is that wc3 dota is just a fun mod for wc3 and now shit noob games like LoL took the credits and make their own game full of noobs, are u happy with it? we need a dota 2 now or people will only remember shit like LoL and stuff, what every 12 year old kid can master :X
