cogu: "Worst tournament ever"

We sat down with ProGaming.TD ace Raphael "cogu" Camargo following his team's early elimination in Paris and asked the Brazilian Sniper what went wrong.

ProGaming.TD had a three-week bootcamp at Inferno Online in Stockholm prior to the event, but had to settle for the fourth place in Group A after securing just one victory from four matches.

It was a nightmare tournament for the Brazilians, who were unable to play with their usual setup as their luggage was mislaid at the airport in Paris.

In this interview, Camargo gives his opinion about the tournament, reveals the problems his team faced, and also talks about the upcoming tournament, DreamHack Winter.

Your team is out of the tournament with just one victory in the group stage. What went wrong?

This was by far the worst tournament I have ever played in the 10 or 11 years I have been playing CS in my career. First, they lost our luggage at the airport, and three of our players played without their usual keyboards. I played without my keyboard, my headphones and my mousepad. The schedule that was on the ESWC's website was wrong. We tried to get to the venue as early as possible, but when we got here, we could not warm up. I tried to find someone who could lend me a keyboard, but everyone was playing, so I could not do it. Then the admins told us that we had to start playing, so I could not warm up to check if my settings were right. Against Area51, I could not change my zoom sensitivity or my mouse sensitivity and I was playing without sound. The admins had no respect for us, we have been training for God knows how many days in Sweden and we practiced intensively for this joke.

Do you think that things could have been different, had everything been normal?

We played against Area51 five days ago and we thrashed them on every map! I could not do anything. I did not play with my sens or my crosshair, and I was playing without sound. I did not know if there was an opponent near me or not.

After the defeat against Area51, you secured eight rounds against mouz and 13 against NiP. Are you satisfied with those results, considering the conditions?

Listen, we did not come here to fool around, to finish third or second. We came here to win and they did not give us the opportunity to do so.I am also disappointed with the organisation and the tournament. Our bags got lost when we got here. Nothing worked out.

Your team's next event will be DreamHack Winter later in the month. Will you return to IOS to bootcamp? What will your team's goals be?

We will now return to Sweden to bootcamp until DreamHack. Our goal is always the same: we will play to win, that is what we practice for.

You recently returned to activity after a long period away from scene. Do you think you are at the same level you were in 1.6?

I am still very far away from that level, especially because this is a new game. I still have a lot to improve, and I hope that I will be able to improve my game.

imagine you were cogu, you invested a lot of time to be good at eswc and now your luggage is lost. youre probably pissed off and when youre pissed off you play terribly (at least most players) and combine this with different equipment + no sound...yeah it was pretty fair o_O and yeah against mouz...how would you feel when you loose 16:0 in such a way? nothing weird if they lost even if theyre better (dunno if theyre better than mouz or not, just saying). next time think before you write stupid things.

my point is that they gambled witht their luggage, it's a well known fact that arilines have to handle millions of luggage daily and some are inevitably lost. They should have brought the important stuff to the plane, hence it was not "out of their control" and bitching about it afterwards just make them look like idiots.

unlucky but avoidable accident, and what do you want ? me to do a public speech about this matter? They got what they deserved, bitching about it won't fix the problem, they should grow up and not blame others for the problems they caused.

we want you to stop writing stupid things. every post you write has less sense (they got what they deserved?, they caused the problems?). imo a chance that your luggage will be lost is less than 1% and i dont think theres anything wrong with trusting airline companies your luggage (after all, theyre responsible for it, not you).

i've had to travel via plane for a North American LAN before, and I carried all my equipment on the plane with me. I've traveled by plane maybe 20 times in my life, and I've had my luggage lost about 4 times. it happens, and when you're competing at the event you've been preparing almost a month for, you shouldn't overlook the risk in losing your gaming gear.

"First, they lost our luggage at the airport, and three of our players played without their usual keyboards" Indirectly their fault. Why would you pack those valuable items in luggage and not carry on? "The schedule that was on the ESWC's website was wrong. We tried to get to the venue as early as possible, but when we got here, we could not warm up. " Everyone seems to have gotten there on time and had time to practice. Miscommunication on their part. "Against Area51, I could not change my zoom sensitivity or my mouse sensitivity and I was playing without sound" Don't know about the sound issue, but it seems you probably could have changed your sensitivity and crosshair through even the main menu lool.. "The admins had no respect for us" Yes, you deserve special treatment because you were the only team to train for this event and failed to plan things correctly. "We played against Area51 five days ago and we thrashed them on every map!" Not according to sgares' interview! straight up fail

that sucks but for the people ready to flame i should point out area51's bootcamp was on 80fps computers (even lower with molotovs etc) on 60hz and with less than 10 inches of mousepad space... practice is practice. with that said, i don't think it's very smart to check the bags with the gear you need for cs, i've always kept mine in the carry on for that reason. sucks none the less, but at least they get another chance at dreamhack.

but that's should not be said to justify that cogu is only crying, you should say this to the fact that a51 lost to nip, because even my team without training can win against cogu without sound, and nervous... a51 can be the best team in the world, but this game shouldn't end up with a 16-0 ;)

the fact of the matter is: - TD was the only team to arrive as late as they did to the tournament. every other team was early. - TD was the only team to lose their gear when they should've been more careful and brought it on the plane. - TD still lost to NiP and mouz, so yes it sucks to get 16-0'd, but they weren't making it out of their group anyway. I guarantee you next time they bring their equipment on the plane, and they get to the tournament early. They made mistakes, combined with bad luck, and next time they will know better.

Bullshit. We arrived at 8:30 as well (BECAUSE ESWC TOLD US TO BE THERE AT THAT TIME ! ) but were unable to receive our badges quickly and thus only arrived at our PC's at 9:15... Then we had to setup and go live against Mouz at 9:30, while they had been warmingup and fixing their settings. Teammate and me both did not have proper configuration when going live, so we were editing TS3 and ingame sound while playing... GG ESWC.

From an spectators point of view I must say the games got played insanely fast, faster then on any 1.6 tourney Ive witnessed. But its sad to hear it was on the expense of the gaming quality for some teams. It's pretty inexcusable to force teams to play without even using their regular settings altho the loss of gear wasnt the organisers fault.

everything about the tournament ran perfectly. no real delays, no computer problems, no packeting the servers, nothing. everything bad that happened was only towards one team, the brazilians. other than TD, everything was perfect, and you shouldn't trash talk the tournament organizers when they did a really good job.

not quite, some things need be set by 4~6 commands, i think that they was nervous at the time so he couldn't stop a second to do anything, idk... whatever... I believe in his words: "We played against Area51 five days ago and we thrashed them on every map!"

even if it's 4-6, you can get that fixed within your first death or two. plus didn't they lose first pistol? 2nd round save after losing pistol gives plenty of time to put in any commands you need. there were definitely some things outside their control, but console commands were definitely *not* one of them

#103 I just don't know what was going there so I can't predict anything. What was the situation? No one will know, how difficult could be change console commands? Depends. 1/2 kills? Ok, the enemy can multiply 1/2 rounds to 3 ~ 5 rounds... I can imagine how difficult it's without sound and their own equip. #140 EVERYONE. Now, more than ever.

rofl you clearly dont know what are you tlaking about kid... and something for you from iview with sgares: "You were able to beat ProGaming 16-0 in your first match. Were you surprised by this scoreline? cogu told me that he had smashed your team in practice just some days ago. We have been bootcamping at a LAN in Paris where we have 60hz monitors and 60 fps. The people there are great, but the computers are not up to par. They did not smash us, I believe they may have barely won one map or something like that, and when we were playing against them on de_dust2, they left after the break, when we were winning. Maybe it would have been better if they had stayed, right?" so get lost fanboy

first of all i know that they didn't show up on eswc just to say "hey we are here". second like he said, they got there and had to start playing the match with no warmp up and 2/3 elements with no hardware, so obvious they didn't have the time to config their settings. third it's bad for an organization like this had no respect at all and no comprehension about the situation. And last, instead of judge him put yourself on his shoes and think what your reaction would be.

First of all, they probably just wanted to try if they are close to top, which they werent. Not even close. Secondly, it takes 2seconds to change your mouse sensitivy or your xhair, lame execuses which only brazilians buy. It surely wasnt organizations faulth, if they cant take care of their luggages. And last, instead of belieaving everything he says. Take a look to that game against area51, that was total humiliation. Gogu was great player at 2006, now his just infamous nobody.

How is it ESWC's fault if your lagguage gets lost at the airport, maybe get there one day ahead, so this doesn't happen. Good Job Admins, at least the tournament could start closely to the set time it was suppose to start, so all the FANS (which in the end it's all about, isn't it???) don't have to waste time sitting in front of their computer. No set time-schedule... why did all the other teams make it on time? These arguements from COGU are very one-sided (obviously), extremely egoistical and therefore invalid and shows that they can't get their SHIT together. It's always easy to blame others! GJ ESWC, I as a viewer enjoy that matches are close to the set time they were suppose to be played.

so You prefer watching 16-0 pointless game on time instead of a proper match 30-60minutes later ? Well I gotta say You and I have very diffrent interest in those games. I for one consider watching the 16-0 game a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME and Im dissapointed that the tournament organizer allowed such a poor performance game to be played, especially if they knew what the situation is like. ESWC 1st screwed up Dota tournament to the very limit, now there are complains from the players themself yet again about CS tournament - right or wrong the tournament itself is not anywhere near the quality it should have

like I said, all the other teams made it on time, why couldn't they make it. Punctuality is one an important part. If the teams are not on time, the fan's time gets wasted. A lot of people do not watch cs anymore, not because they don't like it but because they don't feel like wasting hours upon hours sitting in front of the computer waiting for teams/admins to get their shit together. There are always other teams I can watch, if one doesn't make it on time and the tournament goes on its merry "efin" way on time, I could care less about that one match.

Yeah like they decide when the plane lands, or if the plane has some delays etc, good job dude. I don't know if you have been on a plane already, or at least travelled around the world, but, sometimes, a plane ticket can cost double the price just for a matter of day.. So maybe they had to do it this way. Same shit, if they arrive one day earlier, it is still one more day to pay in the hotel.. they might have sponsors who pay for all of this, but they might have instructions too about their expenses.

and that makes it alright for him to say ESWC is the worst??? His team bootcamped in Europe already, so hotel costs are going to be there no matter what. Flights in the EU are alright considering delays. (the worst delay I've had was 8 hours) Schedule your flights ahead and you won't have huge cost variations Quit defending him. The bottom line is! His team failed, he blames it on others... this tells me he is full of himself and can't handle his shit!

Firstly, dont blame ESWC for anything, they kept to a schedule and i for one am glad they did, this is the first time in ages matches have begun on time. It was the unlucky situation at the airport. Secondly you might have smashed A51 on prac but im pretty sure they praced on shit pc's prior to this. No fault by ESWC they kept to a good schedule and it was your fault and also being a little unlucky that is to blame.

Sorry Cogu, but it's not ESWC's fault that you screwed up. The fact that you didn't put your gear in your carry bags is entirely your fault. The fact that you guys didn't have a plan for an emergency such as losing your gear is a flaw with you and your organisation. If you travelled such that you had a very small margin of time, that is your fault. To put it into perspective, let's look at sports etc.... Do you think a tournament will be delayed because a team shows up ill-prepared, without their gear? The answer is no. The responsibility is 100% yours to show up and be prepared. Hell, I used to compete in mountain-biking etc. Even if my race took place in the afternoon, we'd travel so I'd be at the race location at 9 in the morning at the latest, just so I could be prepared, any emergencies handled etc. And we did that without a pro organisation behind me. So stop your bitching, and show some adult responsibility, Cogu

It happens often enough that there are insurance policies for it. If you're stupid enough not to find out about that, well... As for who has a plan B? Anyone whose career depends on having their gear with them will have a plan B or even plan C if they are even halfway competent. In this case, they also have an organisation. You can bet your ass that any serious sports team will have lots of planning for travel emergencies such as how to ship gear, backup plans for if gear gets lost etc etc.

I travel a lot too, between clients, and I used to travel while competing, so I do have some experience with logistics, and let's just say moving a bike+gear around is harder than moving keyboard+mouse+headset... And while competing, it was just my father and I, no help from a sponsor or organisation.

yeah but its a pain in the ass to carry hand luggage at the aiport because of long walks, queues. In some flight companies we get shitty legroom and it sucks if you got like a million bags with you. people just get rid of everything when they check in, fact :p

If they didn't have time to handle any emergencies, they didn't give themselves a large enough margin of time. As for their gear, that's also their own fault. They could have had it in their carry bags etc, or had a talk with their sponsors about alternative shipping etc. As I pointed out, any sports team deals with this, and have plan B's and even C's.

I have over 16 years of experience of travelling and making sure I don't lose my gear. First when I competed in mountain-biking(let's put it like this: you can't get a bike with you into the cabin ;) ), but also in my professional career, where I have to take expensive computer hardware with me around to various clients etc. The travels while I was competing was just me and my father handling things, we didn't have a pro organisation and sponsors that could help me out... So stop fanboying, and start thinking

There are steps you can take to mitigate it, and also backup plans you can put into effect. Shipping via mail/DHL/UPS/Schenker is one for example. That reduces the risk of gear getting lost significantly.

Only spectated ProGaming.TD 's match vs NiP and the brazilians made a great match against for this moments undisputed best CS:GO team in the world. Sad to see a couple of such deeply shitty things happened just before these important matches you worked so hard and travel lot for that RLY destroyed the very right circumstances. It shouldnt be possible to happen, but mb fate can not be always 100% fair, :/ but the talented and dedicated ones almost always comeback and shows some highly stronK plays of what's ahead for them. Try keep the spirits and motivations high.. meanwhile it sucks for the moment... Big Good Luck at DHW and rest of the future to you guys! .

LOL I'm laughing so hard of those hate comments about cogu. xD You can see there is some guys who don't want to accept a brazilian as one of the best awpers of history. You can see it by the amount of hate on their comments. This guys are so full of yourself that they can't accept a foreign (non european) as best in a game they play. They think their players are better cause their country is more "developed". Sorry guys but I have to say: Talent is something you can't buy, you born with it!

It´s funny how people here try to make funny of Brazil, with jokes like "uuu that´s what happens when you travel by plane for the first time", they think that in Brazil there are just monkeys and horses, and they even keep questioning how the team got all the money to travel and spend all these time out there training, if you think Brazil is a country of poor and miserable people I´m ashamed of you.

#301 The admins were right. If they want to warm up and make sure all the settings are right, they should get there EARLIER, to prepare. Big events like this have a severe schedule, or everything falls apart. They were late, their problem, not ESWC. The admins are there to make sure the match starts on schedule.

In this topic: Brazilians and myself sympathize with cogu, while the rest of the world forget his 1.6 accomplishments and flame him to no end. Like, really? What's wrong with you people? The guy's a living legend. If he's been playing CS for 10-11 years, I think he's entitled to a few assurances. Having sound, having the right config, having the correct schedule, not having shitty baggage service... I could tell something was wrong when Area 51 completely steamrolled Progaming 16-0. They bootcamped for 3 weeks at one of the most famous LAN centers in the world for God's sake. Anyone without major cerebral damage should realize that a team that's practiced that hard shouldn't lose a match without winning a single round. Well, that's my rant. Continue your flaming as you wish.

So, what part of Cogu being a "legend" absolves him from responsibility for his actions and behaviour? Let's put it like this: If Brazil showed up for a world cup match and said "We need to delay kick off because we lost our gear during the flight", they'd become the laughing stock of the world, and rightly so. So why should Cogu and his teammates not be responsible for their screw-up like the adults they are? ESWC has commitments to ALL the teams and the viewers to stick to the schedule, and avoid all the delays that destroy other tournaments, and they stuck to it, and they deserve respect for that.
2012-11-02 18:11

The point is not that they stuck to schedule, the point is that they stuck to a schedule unavailable to one of the teams competing. Should ESWC bend over backwards for Progaming? Perhaps not. Should they be at least a bit more flexible? Absolutely. I'd bet that if NiP had similar problems, ESWC would wait on them hand and foot.

None of the other teams had a problem with getting the right schedule, which further tells us that the screw-up lies completely with Progaming.TD As for what'd happen if NIP had these problems, ESWC would do the same thing, since NIP are not french. Also, NIP probably have actual back-up plans in place.

Cogu lost the bag at airport, maybe bad luck, I don't know how he will go back (all belongings lost, including passport?). Regarding no sound and keyboard, we need to see the pics of eswc, I say he could have spent some few dollars and bought headphones atleast if not a keyboard. Cogu is a decent player and lets see how they gonna perform in DH.

cogu is retarded, I still don't get how anything that happened was ESWC's fault. If anything, it was COGU's fault, for checking in his equipment (and not carrying inside the plane), and it was also his fault for arriving late at the event.

First of all, yous should never put your keyboard and other peripherals with your cargo luggage. Always take them with you in the plane. Airlines have lost by bag also, but you can eliminate the worst case scenario by this way. Second you should always go to the LAN venue like super early to see if things are going according to schedule or not. So i would say those are excuses, and a experienced LAN player like cogu should know better.

I doubt they played without sound, since they have Plantronics headsets hooked up to every computer. It takes 10 seconds to figure out your sensitivity with a new mouse. A keyboard doesn't matter nearly as much as a mouse. Seems like a bunch of excuses to me, no other team had any issues with the schedule or getting their on time with their equipment. It just sounds like bad losing to me.

Ok...You're at a tournament you were invited to, right? Your PC has issues, in which the tournament organizers made you use, right? They would have ABSOLUTELY paused the match and fixed his PC if he had asked. I am 100% positive about that, considering similar things have happened at EVERY ESWC that has ever happened. They lost, and badly. Cogu did not care enough to ask, and therefor he feels he need to blame his faults on the organization of the tournament. Warming up is not 100% crucial, especially if you've played FPS games for as long as every player there. I can play with a different mouse, keyboard, headset, mousepad, monitor, computer, resolution, sensitivity, etc, and be just as good in 3-5 rounds. It would require me a good 1 minute of deathmatching to compensate for my hardware changes, I guess I'm just not mentally challened or looking for someone to blame my issues on. Fact is, they did not force him to play with a broken computer. He never asked I am sure, and since he never asked, they never fixed it. It's that simple. You pause your match, tell the officials your computer is messed up, and they will replace it. It's been done at every major LAN event for the past 15 years. If I was ESWC, I would never invite them back to another event. 'Professionals' do not blame the event or issues for their lack of competing, but merely themselves.

LOL... is this post serious? Ofc its not hard to be as good as you in 3 -5 round with random gear, but playing as good as cogu is a bit different f00l. The problem was not the fact that the computer was broken, the problem with the ESWC orga was the fact that it took to long to be allowed in the venue, and thus Progaming.TD(and us LOL:)) had no time to warmup or properly fix their settings(shitty eswc gui, not allowed your own config etc).

I´m not saying it was all the organization or the team´s fault, I´m saying everything started wrong since the airport, yes, the team is wrong by getting late to the event, but what if all these mistakes started by the case in the airport? The team should´ve got prevented off all these things, and they didn´t, but if these things hadn´t happened maybe they would arrived earlier and could solved the equipments and warm up problems.

A51 is not a weak team, they are strong, but the point is: ESWC organization didnt had comprehention with the brazillians situation

It's an unfortunate situation to be in but I think he's more disappointed about the fact that he couldn't prove himself as a player in this tournament. I think he's still got a lot of CS in him. DH should be more interesting.

i don't think i have ever seen so many retards in one thread, eswc gave them the wrong times so when they got to the lan they had no time to warm up or set up their computers. for starters everyone saying oh it only takes a minute to change your settings etc, all the players are using an eswc gui which doesn't allow them to use the console at all so to change settings you would need to write an autoexec file out for yourself, cogu also stated in an interview with richard lewis that the admin told him he may change his settings after knife round, then after the knife round was completed he disconnected and tried to do so but was then told by the admin that they were running late and he would have to rejoin the server to play.

Hit esc, change sensitivity in your options. No need to write an autoexec...have you LANned before? I'm sorry, but if I traveled as far as he did, and was playing for this amount of pride/money, I would tell the admin to hold on a minute. It's not that hard, the match could have been delayed 10 minutes without an issue, if they had asked for it. I find it VERY hard that they would simply deny him to change his settings at all, if so then this is the first LAN to ever do it in the history of gaming. I don't think that's the case. I'm sure he simply didn't asked, and just did what they said to do.

This was the case :) Admins didn't allow for any delays, which is good ofcourse in the case of players going out for smokes etc. But when you can't properly setup your PC for a good match... then they take it too far :(

Not saying they would have won but that type of shit would deff throw most players if not the whole team off, especially thinking how much you've been boot-camping. Dreamhack should be interesting.

This is a "damned if i do damned if i don't". If they delay matches spectators call it a shit tournament and shit organizers. If they don't delay and keep the schedule than it's their fault their favourite players couldn't be professionals (as they self-proclaimed) and arrive on time. When you travel, you luggage sometimes gets lost. It's not ESWC's fault, it's the airport/airline's fault, deal with it. A guy like cogu that has travelled everywhere a gazillion times should be aware and schedule the trip to France earlier to prevent that. All of this sounds like excuses as usual from brazillians when they underperform, but even given the right circunstances I very much doubt they could win vs A51 today, at least from what they played after. Obviously they were still tilted from what happened but whatever, quit your whining and be professional next time.

Then their management is accountable, not ESWC. My point still stands, organizers aren't the ones to blame for lost luggage, that's just him being bitter.

That sounds awful. They definitely wouldnt have gotten baet like that by area51, although if 4 players had regular settings, you would think they could at least get a few rounds. Anyway, at least they will have their chance again at DreamHack Winter. A shame, though.

We can't overrate the top1. By the way, for me cogu is top1 with marik... I can't let markeloff with second place. The problem is few hltv people saw cogu playing in his top, so it's common people decrease what they didn't know.
