CPL Turn Back to CS 1.6
The CPL has announced the official tournaments for the CPL Winter 2007 event. Both Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source have been included.
About two years ago the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) decided to drop one of their biggest tournaments, Counter-Strike 1.6 and only host Counter-Strike: Source tournaments. The results were not good with many gamers boycotting CPL Summer 2005 Championships and as the years have progressed the CPL's popularity, in Europe at least, has dropped drastically.
The long-term results have seen a divided community. Not only has the standard of Counter-Strike 1.6 teams in the USA dropped considerably but the two continents (Europe & North America) no longer compete and we have lost the excitement that Team 3D and compLexity used to bring when they faced the likes of SK Gaming or mousesports.
This new move by the CPL will not only reunite the gamers, but will also see both Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source tournaments. This will help to show the popularity of each game. However, if you thought that wasn't exciting enough, the winners of each tournament will then face eachother in both versions on the game to decide which is the best team in the world overall!
You got it! Not only will there be a CS1.6 tournament with a prize purse a of $50,000, not only will there be a CS:S tournament with a prize purse of $50,000 but the winning team from each event will have a face off against eachother to decide who is better! We may even get to see a SK Gaming vs Team 3D match and reminisce about the old days, or even a fnatic vs compLexity face-off!
Counter-Strike 1.6 is set to make its return to the CPL at the Winter 2007 event which is scheduled to take place from December 18th - December 22nd 2007 at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, Texas. The official press release by the CPL follows:
The CPL announced that it will hold two 64-team Counter-Strike tournaments at the CPL Extreme Winter Championships, scheduled to take place Tuesday, December 18 to Saturday, December 22, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas, Texas.
The two $50,000 five-versus-five tournaments will feature both Counter-Strike: Source and Counter-Strike 1.6.
The winning teams of the Counter-Strike:Source and 1.6 tournaments will then face each other in a final (on stage) match to determine the 2007 Counter-Strike World Champion. The final match will be held on Nuke, Dust 2, and CPL Mill.
Registration will open Monday, September 10, 2007 at noon central. All teams must register at https://www.thecpl.com/register.php
Post questions about the CS tournaments on this forum thread.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Pro, semi-pro, amateur and causal Counter-Strike teams can register for either tournament. No pre-qualification is required. Both tournaments will be held on high-end tournament computers. To manage the large amount of computers required, the online registration for the Counter-Strike tournaments will close promptly on Monday, October 29, 2007 at noon central. If the 64-spots for each tournament are not all taken by the close of the online tournament registration, an adjustment in tournament size and cash prizes will be determined by the league. Registration spots are not secured until at least five-members of a team have registered online. The CPL will not hold spots, offer special considerations or give discounted passes to any team.
UPDATE: Tournament Prize Breakdown (9/8/07 - 9:38PM)
