Ex6TenZ: "We all have to improve"

Vakarm.net sat down with VeryGames captain Kévin "Ex6TenZ" Droolans and discussed with the Belgian veteran the team's first months in CS:GO.

After dominating the CS:Source scene for several years, the France-based team switched to CS:GO soon after it was released with hopes of achieving the same level of success in the new game.

However, almost four months later, VeryGames have yet to win a major international competition in CS:GO, having lost to Ninjas in Pyjamas in the finals of four different tournaments.

In this interview, Droolans shares his thoughts on VeryGames' results in CS:GO so far, the team's rivalry with NiP and the plans for 2013, among other topics.

Three weeks ago, during an interview, we discussed about your team and how you felt after your performance at Electronic Sports World Cup. Today, you come back from two events which are DreamHack Winter and ESH, where you both ranked second. My question stays the same as in November, you defeated former world champions and excellent 1.6 and source players such as ESC, Dynamic and other teams but still finished second: Despite this, are you satisfied?

Yes, we are quite satisfied of the wins we took, because considering how much we invested ourselves into the game, I think we deserved them. There is something that I find less satisfying, even disappointing: I am well aware that we have been far from our best level. There are various reasons for that, and I will be honest with you, let’s get into details…

I think we all have things to get better at. Individually, I was not at my best skill level during three tournaments, with a 0.9 ratio. It is just inconceivable, even for a leader. But my team-mates also have to work on some things. SmithZz has to work on his lack of investment as a co-leader during our trainings, RpK and NBK for their lack of inventiveness on their positions and kennyS for his lack of maturity in general.

Here are all the things we have to improve in 2013. About the positive aspects, I would say that SmithZz was really good individually and that he helped me a lot as a co-leader during our official matches. We got back the impressive RpKTanK after working on his positions and kennyS and NBK managed to get their skill out when it was the time to. As for me, I feel more confident regarding my leader position.

If we work on our mistakes, our memories are likely to be way better than these past months. I mean, honestly, even when finishing second at each event, the tournament intensity, the atmosphere and the trips in general made us live great moments ! The CS:GO scene is really exciting, I can’t wait to be in 2013 !

Maturity does not necessarily mean the opposite of being directly childish. What ex6tenz means is that kennyS is young (less mature, less experienced) and therefore is sometimes inclined to doing poor decisions. I could imagine pushing/being too emotional/not listening in a bad way.

From what I've seen, he seems to have the emotional side against him. Once he misses his shots, he keeps missing more and more, which is pretty much what being immature means in CS - not being stable.

I agree his awp is one of the best in CSGO, way more impressive than fifflarens for sure for instance (I know theres quite a few better out there). but if you read well that is certainly not anything x6 is critisizing.

Just to note, it's obvious that the awp isn't that efficient compared to the other games. Many teams don't buy awp at all on T side, when playing some particular maps. Also a handful of teams let their weakest fragger hold the AWP. I bet it's unsatisfying for him, when he was used to top the scoreboard 90% of the matches in source. I bet it'd be good to invest his skills in rifling.

Well, there's also a lot of players that have been very efficient with it (RattlesnK or steel for example), I'm not sure how efficient it is or isn't, but it seems like it's what teams need against NiP. RattlesnK did his job more than well and they managed to play a very close match with them thanks to that.

The interview was pretty interesting. I reckon VG will be up there challenging, and 2013 will be a far more interesting and intense year than what we've seen so far, with teams starting to pour in the hours into the game, to catch up with NiP. If ESC manage to take this weekends StarLadder StarSeries event, then ESC will have the upper hand, so VG need to get themselves up there on the board at some point to get some of that VG "strong confidence" they had once in Source. They have the players, especially now RpKTanK has decided to get it back, they now need that mental awareness to get back the confidence.

Shox beat verygames (the only team to beat a line up close to their current. Which is when he joined them after. But yeah, in terms of css game play, verygames were always the best French team, they just haven't found their style or aim yet. Ex6tenz was always the worst fragger but he was better than he is playing.

You cant out strat NiP, you have to out aim them. Xizt doesnt come from a background in calling and interviews from fnatic and forest/gtr, players have a lot of freedom during rounds under Xizt's leadership. The current situation with VG hasnt worked as of yet and to be honest doesnt look to be getting better so instead of going purely for tactics they should look at some madfraggers to come in like ScreaM and just try to purely out aim them.

Theres IGL's like RobbaN for example who have been doing this for years across multiple teams. Not just suddenly thrown into it because no-one in the lineup has a background as IGL.

I suppose anyone who is not the best at anything should just give up. That's how it works in this world, right? Quitting is the best option? Then, once you've quit, you should tell other people what to do with their lives over the internet, because you've made so much of yours.
