Ozstrik3r: "I deserve the criticism"

Our fellow reporters at Vakarm.net have conducted an in-depth interview with Steeve "Ozstrik3r" Flavigni, captain of Imaginary Gaming.

The French veteran, 34, earned a lot of criticism from the community during his time playing 1.6, and his popularity has not improved since switching to CS:GO.

He still remains at the helm of one of France's hottest teams, who recently finished third at the SLTV StarSeries finals, in Ukraine.

In this interview, Flavigni talks about the criticism targeted at him, his gaming career and the transition to CS:GO, among other topics.

I do not know if you have noticed, but lurppis, a former member of 69N-28E and now a reporter for HLTV.org, as well as markeloff (Na´Vi) and Xizt (NiP) have not been kind to you on Twitter because of your performances at SLTV. Have you talked to them? How do you take these comments? Do you plan to retire, as they recommend?

Yes, I was told about that, but honestly I deserve the criticism, I have not played very well, so they have the right to say those things. But that does not affect me. The important thing for me is to have the trust of my team-mates. Then I realise how lucky I am to play in big teams, but they have to understand that I have a family, an apartment, pets and a job, and if I have the confidence of my players it is because I am useful.

You have been French champion, competed in ESWC and several other international events in 1.6: What are your favourite memories from this scene? Which player impressed you the most in this game ?

The most memorable tournament to me would be CPL Dallas, because in addition to the good result we had, our organisation was at its prime. It was thanks to this tournament that aAa were selling ice-creams with our heads on the package in all Casino supermarkets. There was also the ESWC 2006 match against 3D. We were playing on stage, and there were so many spectators that it was really an insane feeling to defeat them. The most memorable player to me is f0rest, because being the best is great, but being the best for six years is almost impossible.

The thing is that hes a bad player, everyone knows it and they are telling him to retire and let the new generation 2 play. Now hes more like a burden 2 team, then a player who can help 4 the team. For example imagine yourself in a battlfield and u have a wounded guy whos bareley moving or not moving at all and u need 2 carry him, well everyone will carry him untill hes saved, died or left behind. So now hes the same burden to that team, becouse hes not improving & never will. Plus he sayed by himself, that he has a wife, kids, pets, job ? Yeah that's fucking true ! I mean, it's not the first time that he plays with really good teamates and that he plays at a low level compare to them (it was so in 1.6 but he was way better than now in go) but if the guy is still playing with really good mates that means that he is bringing something to the team that is really important. If he wasn't that he would've been kicked since long. I know that Shox expressed himself about that in a comment on vakarm.net where he explains all that. Maybe also that Oz's teamates trust him to become better in that game, that maybe he needs more time because he is older and has a job that is taking time. For me it seems that imaginary gaming doesn't want to succeed better against other teams, it just wants to join professinal lans and meet old friends (maybe get themselves into some highlights :D ) ;) shoxie and scream are arguably in top 15 when u look at skill in the game. If they'd want to compete against other players they had to form a team with more individually skilled players than they have now. That 0,44 kdr ozstrik3r has tells it's own story. I think SmithZz left to VG because he wanted to win more and be on the top. That's what I think it was at least.

It's normal in any sport, but i don't think that professional players of other sports will talk trash about other players so often and in public. That's the difference. When you were in EG i had the opportunity to watch a lot of povs (n0thing's, others were not even worthy). All i could see in chat was you and gfn yelling about how your teammates let you die, or how they didn't helped you ..blah blah... To this day, i have a great deal of respect for Gilbert(and many others like him) since he has to play with low skill guys like yourself and still maintain his calm. I never watched him freaking out/ craving for anything even if his score was down 3-12. Even forest got frustated over how Markeloff owned fnatic in that legendary match. So, please stop displaying your MEDALs and shouting what you have done so far. Keep them for your grand children and tell them how you mocked the community, and dance over what you've achieved and others could not.

i have never had an argument in my life with n0thing, just fyi. you don't understand cs well enough and/or do not know our strats in eg, so you can't tell when he is doing something wrong. for you him peeking somewhere might look like it's a part of a strat, but in reality he might ruin a strat we've gone over and practice tens of times by doing that. one example is from wcg 2009 where i wasn't allowed to play due to nationality restrictions. eg was on the verge of beating mtw, but n0thing and frod both started chasing two opponents with a 14-12ish (can't recall anymore) lead in a 4v2 situation with bomb planted (and mtw would be buying with under 3k next round), because they didn't communicate, which allowed mtw to win a 2v2 in the bombsite. n0thing has never been one to type much and you wouldn't be very smart to assess players based on what they do or do not type in a demo. most people just speak off mic, or next round. oh, and despite calling strats for weaker teams that lost more matches (leading to worse stats) i actually have better stats (fpr) as an entry-killer than strat callers such as ave, carn, robban & walle. go back to cs school.

That example you quoted does not appropriately applies in the case we are talking since theres always a tendency among players to chase down remaining enemies. But i've seen you guys arguing and spitting out frustration more often (MSI Beat IT for ex.). It was great play by EG but i was amazed to see the disparity among the players. And this was not limited to this tourney. Gfn is another one who seems to be more concerned about yelling rather than game itself. Anyways, we had enough already. that is sooooo shockingly not true? how can you say that? french teams have always been a serious threat to top teams and you know it.. being top 4 in the french scene for a decade is VERY impressive given the amount of challengers every year, quality teams etc... especially for a player like Oz who never really been an oustanding individual skilled player (and neither were you.. but that only proves that both of you are very good at leading teams) the french scene has almost always been tougher than yours (at least amount-of-topteamwise) and you can't deny that.. I doubt lurppis will answer to this ignorance, so let me answer. Youre greatly underestimating compatitive level cs if you think that all professional cs players are on same level, are in same positions and have same level of skills. To get this high there is need for serious effort and talent, yet, according to info, this guy have work and don`t have time to put his all for playing cs. He is not working working full-time on his skills, yet his skill is bad and so he will keep falling further behind due to gap in practice times.

As you can see from the comments, some people are not exactly thrilled about the comments lurppis made. Therefore it isn't just something I made up, it is actually based on something. Secondly, in the second quote "somebody" refers to lurppis himself. I've really never been a big fan of Ozstrik3r but seriously stop comparing things that shouldn't be. His skill went downhill since 2006/2008, that's true. At that time he created good line ups to try and rival emL!, after that his main goal was to recruit young players that were not really given a chance, and give them occasions to play against the best so that one day they're ready to be in the best line up. What's important is not that he and his teams sucked at international events, but that these players got the chance to go there.

If the players act in a professional manner it will attract more sponsors who will want to be a part of them and work with them. So the organisation gains money from sponsors and the sponsors gain money from the advertisement. Now, if Xizt, or Markeloff or whatever start saying shit like this about players without any need in without any respect or consideration it makes the sponsors and the organisation look stupid because that player is associated with them. This may cause sponsors to drop out from the organisation making them lose money and support because the image of the organisation and its players is negative. Ofcourse they value skill more than anything, but there has to be a degree of professionalism and 'manners'. Therefore the bashing done by these players in the thread should not be accepted. Criticizing was based on stats and individual play. Support is for what he brings to the team (pretty sure there are more ways to contribute), his proffesionalism, humbleness, and the way he reacted to the trash talks. Nope, f0rest was already a beast way before he teams up with carn and nearly everyone that was following the swedish scene around 2005-06 knew him already (mainly thanks to his amazing performance at one or two offline events which I don't recall the name), sixer and maj3r on the other hand were totally unknown even for those following closely the french scene, you could call that "luck" but Oz has always had great instinct about upcoming players.. he gave them the confidence and undoubtly contributed to their success.

Bonus question : one year ago, during an interview you did with our Esportsfrance colleagues, you told them you wanted to be a coach, mainly because of your skill. How did it went out ? Was the call of the mouse too strong to continue ? I really appreciated this experience but it is really frustrating because when you are outside the game, you see easily what should be done... I coached the Millenium Ladies various times and I coached 1 day only (because of my work), the Millenium team with harts, sixer, jer, etc... We defeated Sk in the groupstage, so I told myself it was time to leave, and and here's the catch :p The following day, they lost against the top 2 Polish team. You feel really useful in this situation, especially when the players reproaches you for leaving. I will come back to being a coach, for sure, as soon as my players are ready and I think I will be able to make something big with them. When you see talented players you take it for a duty to make them understand each other. He is still playing because this is a lot easier to do when you are directly in the team.

There is a difference between telling the truth and the way truth is being told. It maybe harsh, but we humans have some sense don't we? Not consider a situation. You meet a Cancer patient, all bald and looks extremely ugly. By your logic it is absolutely fine to greet him as, "Hey Baldy.." or "hey Cancer sticken chap.." or even, "Why don't you just die..." Just for the record, eryone knows Ozstriker isn't as talented as other top players ; he's even quite random regarding pure skill. But when it comes to tactics and the way the game should be played he probably knows more than 80% of them. The way those few players commented on his performance sounds disrespectful but they aren't wrong. It seems like a lot of people forget a lot of things in this thread. First of all: no, it is not Ok to trashtalk someone even if you're better at your 'job'. I'm part of a lot of forums in my line of work and a couple hobbies I got, and if the senior members (and by senior I mean markeloff and Xizt, lurppis is on a lower level of the game for sure) trashtalk people starting out or stucked after several years, they would only hurt the community they actually live of - yes professional gamers have sponsors because they have followers, and this atitude is clearly hurting their reputation. It is not actually important if lurppis is better than Oz, but let me just say that when I first started playing this game, lurppis was not around, nor were Xizt and Markeloff, but Oz was already known worldwide (it might be just my bad memory tho'). And it seems like even today Oz is the Vince Lombardi of the French CS scene, spotting talents and coaching them to CS success. I'm not gonna go all "what's lurppis done to CS?" as I'm sure he had his contribuition, but it's clear to me that Oz will be missed way more in France pro game scene that Lurppis in the Finnish scene. I also used to believe that beingn part of HLTV.org and a former semi-pro would be enough for people to understand how bad is this type of behaviour. It seems like the e-sport scene is not so professional, and as many said, if it happened in other sports, it would be big news and it could seriously hurt those players future contracts. Maybe that's one of the reasons why from time to time it feels like some games are vanishing, sponsors are holding their money and the e-sports is going into crisis. To finish it up, what's the problem of playing CS at the age of 34? It feels like those teenagers on ESEA that asking how old I am and saying I should do something else besides playing CS just because I'm 26, especially after they get rapped. Besides, he's gotta a lot more to worry about in life than putting several hours in CS practicing. If the other three had such things to care about this would probably never happen. If his teammates are Ok with his limited time to put up in practice and his current set of skills, why shouldn't we be?
