CS:GO sets new records

During the DreamHack Winter weekend, Counter Strike: Global Offensive has set new records in every aspect of the game, from having over 145,000 viewers to seeing over 93 thousand concurrent players in-game.

The dust is settling from the biggest tournament in Counter Strike history, and it's worth looking back at a few records the tournament has set.

We saw record number of concurrent in-game players broken a few times in November before the big event, but now coupled with the Steam Autumn sale that brought up to 75% discount to CS:GO's price, as well as community-funded DH Winter that gave the game extra attention, the number skyrocketed to 93,905 on Saturday.

Not only that, but it kept going for the past two days, seeing a peak of over 90 thousand players both on Sunday, and today.

The amount of viewers also outmatched all previous numbers by far, as we saw Saturday attract a record-breaking 145,294 spectators during the third map of the final. That number included people watching through the official GOTV and through all Twitch.tv streams connected to that GOTV.

Saturday's matches set new viewership records in CS:GO

Mostly responsible for the big surge in numbers was obviously Valve's involvement, as they firstly put up the $250,000 prize purse, and then helped run the tournament and made it easily accessible for viewing in-game.

Future plans of the Seattle-based company are unknown, but with their hands-on approach for CS:GO's biggest event so far producing great results, it is fair to assume this won't be the last and only time that happens.

Give any game you had to buy a 75% discount, lure them with free candy for watching the games (skins) and spread the word of the Big prize money. You will have big numbers. Well played Volvo but let's see if the number of players playing the game stay up without another big tournament in the near future.

What makes you think there won't be any big tournaments in future? During last month valve probably almost doubled number of people playing the game, which means tons of money from cases keys, so probably next big tournament will be announced soon.

Hey man, no offence. But i honestly don't think any of the professional players or people who are participating in SUCH tournaments are going to agree with you. It's not just about the game numbers mate, in the end its them competing for the prize pool not us. I really don't get it, if such a big event happened why can't you be just fucking supportive if somebody is trying to initiate something. If you can help out and sponsor the next dreamhack instead of valve and attract the same amount of visitors then you have all the right to complain. But as of right now, i'm pretty sure half of the community doesn't really give a shit about your opponent. I know it's a marketing strategy for valve, but lets get real, it's what is feeding the CS:GO community. In turn the money, well some part of it, is coming back to the players who compete for it. I hope you get my point and don't comeback at me for being an indian. Cheers.

GO attracts a lot of the CoD and BF kids, since GO has tons of things based on these games. Even more after the skins update, anve EVEN more with all these drops. Skins = CS:GO redemption

Sure, a lot of COD/BF players are casual. They change game when a new version arrives. However, some of them might stick around if they enjoy CS:GO. It won't be all of them but the game will still grow. I'm not sure if cheating is an issue in those types of games, but in CS:GO I've seen it quite often. Let's hope that doesn't discourage anyone and that appropiate anti-cheating measures are coming soon.

The 'polluted' gray maps, the recoils, the game pace, and the player movementation. All these aspects changed from 1.6 and CSS, into a much more CoD and BF alike experience. Unfortunatelly, every single new FPS is being based on CoD and BF. I can't blame the producers though, since these games made tons of money, so people seem to like them. I just not one of the fans.

There is no recoil in CoD or BF. The game pace? What, are you comparing CoD and BF gamepace where you respawn to CS or even saying it's alike? Player movement? In both BF and CoD it feels like you're moving a truck around when you move and not a player. No it's not alike. The grey maps? Last time I played CoD all the maps weren't lacking colours.

Sorry but ESL production was better. My opinion about DH13 stream production: - weak crosshair settings (should be with outline, max alpha and better colour), - lack of two small screens with camera on players while streaming game screen, - lack of BO3 score UI picture on game screen, - lack of music panel info, - sound quality problems etc., - cameraman fails, + great replays, + awesome full screen from cameras on players, + nice pictures with upcoming matches was great.

Yeah, you're right. Production quality of ESL was much better, but even thou you cannot compare those two tournaments because of significance of DHW. I'm so looking forward to see IEM.

These points which I mentioned are really easy to do, so I think it was more about laziness or lack of knowledge. About sound problems etc. yes it was because of size of the event.

Great! I have a question: When someone had opened few streams with the same match going on then he was like '1 viewer' or 'few viewers' for this match? Btw. I know that this number is 'stream viewers + gotv viewers'.

I enjoyed the event and it shows in the numbers. Somehow it revived that 1.6 feeling I had when following tournaments. The production had some great features like the expert analysis done by Thorin before the match. Showing previous matches from teams and giving some background info helped in building the atmosphere for an intense match. Having play-by-play casters with an analyst made it more professional. Of course, having 100k for 1st place also makes it more exciting. Not everything was perfect though. Starting on a thursday was a bummer for me. There were some problems with audio when switching cameras and a couple of details here and there that can improve. Overall, great event. Let's hope for the next one which I'm sure will have an even bigger production.

Valve's involvement, as they firstly put up the $250,000 prize purse, and then helped run the tournament and made it easily accessible for viewing in-game. FIX THIS, THE COMMUNITY CONTRUBUTED MOST OF THE $250K

Quite sure the community contributed way more than 250k, including like 75% of it that went to Valve's pocket.

Because they are company trying to make profit. Even if they would give all the money they've got from esport keys, safe assumption is that over half of openeded cases weren't esport so... 75% seems legit.

That's because they said so themselves, just as with the Dota2 items. There's a percentage of it that goes into future tournaments, the majority goes into their pocket. Here's an example of proof: counterstrike.wikia.com/wiki/ESports_201.. "A portion of profit will be given to the Counter-Strike eSports community." blog.counter-strike.net/index.php/2013/0.. "A portion of the proceeds from sales of eSports Case Keys will go towards prize purses at CS:GO community competitive events." Need more?

i notice more cheaters, yes, but thats normal. most of them occur at about 22:00-later i think. everytime i am asked to overwatch, i do! and so should every other more or less experienced player and we will suddenly have it a little more clean again. once they discount is gone and the accounts are banned, its back to normal.

LOL'd 1.6 had more viewers and more people playing it. What about the price pool? CSS had one tournament with more money than this and everybody knows CSS was a joke. Also 1.6 was alive and on top shape for a decade, GO wouldn't last a week if Valve wasn't pushing money to make it relevant. Imagine what Riot or Blizzard would have done with 1.6 back in the day.

1.6 never had 145,000 viewers, or even close to it. 1.6 never had 250,000 dollar prize pool. CS:GO lasted a year before it was announced that Valve was collaborating with DHW (that's over 52 weeks). Yes, if 1.6 had the backing of its developers like Riot and Blizzard do for their games, 1.6 could have surpassed the numbers CS:GO saw for DHW 2013. Don't get me wrong. I love 1.6. I've been a fan of the professional scene ever since that epic match between X3 and NiP in 2001 on nuke. I've continued to watch tournaments even though I stopped playing like ten years ago. But CS:GO has my full support and I'm glad that it's doing well.

IEM V had 75k+ viewers on streams, that was when SC2 was getting 120k on its majors. also it was on euro time, which is obviously a crappy time for people from the american continent (especially for southamericans like myself) and no HLTV IPs were available. I believe another positive aspect was how many downloads some demos got, I remember one from NEo got like 100k on one week.

Yes, but have you any idea what an actual source is? I could say that Curling is the most watched sport on the planet, but is that true? nope.

If you don't understand what I'm trying to say, I can't help you. The problem is your side.

Fun thing to know is that a concurrent user amount of 100,000 viewers might come out as far as numbers of 1,000,000 million unique viewers. On this page a video of DreamHack Winter's Ohlén where he states they will publish the final numbers some day soon: ongamers.com/articles/over-2-million-tun..

yuck give me the Valve ... each passing day even more! with the fucking money you take with boxes and spectators fucking money should invest in an anti-cheat, because day after day there are more cheats at csgo ... the LOL if they know the work for its USERS and not Valve ... give me shame that only cares about money and not the welfare of the USERS
