DreamHack Winter 2013 champions fnatic have been denied the chance to defend their title following a 10-16 defeat against SK Gaming.

SK's 16-9 victory against fnatic early on was the first real upset of the tournament, and for this grudge match between two of Sweden's top teams, the same map, de_inferno, was the venue.

fnatic actually came out the brighter and won the pistol round, but then SK responded in convincing fashion and took four rounds in a row. fnatic then pulled one back to make it 2-4, but still they looked far off their opponents, who were in cruise control.

With SK leading 8-2, Jesper "jw" Wecksell won a 1-on-3 situation to lift his team's spirit, but it was a one-off thing, as fnatic were trailing their domestic rivals 3-12 at half time.

SK through to playoffs

In the second half, fnatic once again got off to a good start, this time winning the first three rounds, but in gun play they outplayed by SK, who went for a B push, with Faruk "pita" Pita getting two stunning kills at the end.

fnatic then found a lifeline as they reduced the deficit to 7-14, but the impossible happened in the round that followed, as Pita won a 1-on-3 situation with the odds completely stacked against him, which just showed that fnatic were simply sub par. And SK showed them there is no room for that here, sealing an impressive victory with a B push... while on eco.

not likely, they are very good friends all 5 outside of the game, and they believe that short-term solutions such as changing players is not good for the long run

Pronax and devilwalk. Pronax was brought in right before they won DHW and everyone thought his IGL skills were excellent. Maybe they were, but they sure aren't now.

yea completely ran into a brick wall every time against sk on ferno in the second game. cant believe they took the risk to actually play that map again. they sure have practiced a lot more maps, so i cant understand why they wouldnt go for like dust2, where they could just win by pure skill advantage. also are pretty good at train, mirage and nuke, so there is no way to justify that decision really.

I think their reasoning is that inferno is a more strategic map, and that would give them the upper hand against a somewhat newly formed team. Train and nuke are too unstable for BO1; you can get steamrolled on T side against any group of skilled players. Mirage would have been a good alternative for them.

IMO fnatic might have assumed that sk had exhausted their playbook as a new/mix team in the previous game and that would allow them to win.

if u bootcamp more than 1 month for a event to go out in groups u will change something, 100% they will kick someone or someone will leave.

gg, massively disappointed with fnatic. Why inferno once again? Seems like the only map their are okay with is mirage and they dont play it.. sk saying they actually practiced for a month, which I thought was only for a week, its more understandable now ;]

fnatic bootcamped as well. and against a lower tier team like sk they could practically play any other map than the one they just got upset on. really no way to justify inferno again.

SK really showed up, they seem like nice, talented lads. I was rooting for fnatic and im frustrated with their performance. they need some new blood

I dont care if fnatic lose or win, I'm just disappointed that they lose their faith and somehow didnt trust their aim. And SK, although they got 3-12 on the first half against VP on train, they still get 9 more rounds. Even they lose at 12-16, they showed their potential and tried their best. That's the most important thing. Fnatic didnt even try...

So true. Seems like fnatic doesn't have the fire anymore which they displayed at DHW. I'm not saying they should disband but maybe they need some fresh talent or a new IGL to motivate them better. They obviously have the firepower/raw aim but they are unable to put it to use. And this is the result of a one month bootcamp? I feel sorry for them. But on the other hand it's really awesome to see SK doing well. Legendary org.

I agree I was shaking my head in frustrations at some of the decisions they were making. I do like an underdog story, i'll be rooting for SK and NIP for now!

Veryyy true, fnatic always seems to almost simply give up once they start losing consecutive rounds or even when just playing multiple consecutive games, its like they just stop trying when things aren't going their way or when they start to get fatigued. They're by far the most inconsistent team, I *never* bet on fnatic, and it paid off today in both matches gg SK :)

This! I loved the statement one of the SK players (I believe pita?) made after the match and he said they were confident because they don't play as individuals but as a team. It seemed really genuine and they shut out the fnatic "aimstars" really stoked to see more from these guys

An interesting fact is that the commentators speculated the crowd hype for SK came from their brand logo attracting fans for so long when actually, as roque said in post interview, it was their friends that swarmed the place as they had agree before. So basically it was home turf for SK vs VP and Fnatic...When fnatic won DH over NiP the crowd was sided with Fnatic like Semmler pointed out (we assume it was "underdog effect". Also VP took Katowice with a insane crowd support. Point is these things need to get looked at and controlled in any sport since the momentum and psychological effect is too big of a factor.

guys i know most of you are emotionally driven, but seriously dont overhype SK. A nametag dont win tournaments, they just won vs fnatic, a very average team atm also they are both from the same country. They are just going to lose against the next real top team they face, like they did to VP.
