NiP see off Na´Vi to win DH Summer

NiP won DreamHack Summer 2014 following a 2-0 victory over Na´Vi in the grand final (16-5 on de_inferno, 19-16 on de_train).

Na´Vi started off in great fashion in the first half on de_inferno, getting four kills early in the pistol round, which left Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg up against three opponents. The Swedes replied immediately after, though, rushing the B site on eco and planting the bomb thanks to some well-timed grenades. Na´Vi did kill off their opponents, but they took too long to retake the bombsite, allowing the bomb to go off.

NiP went on to win two more rounds to take the score to 3-1 in their favour, but then a mistake while planting the bomb in A, combined with some miscommunication on the Swedes' part, allowed Na´Vi to reduce the deficit to just one round.

The Ukrainian side were able to level the score on three rounds but overconfidence on their part proved costly as they once again fell victim to an eco round from NiP, with Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund getting some important kills.

After finding themselves trailing NiP 3-6, Na´Vi switched to a took a more aggressive approach to defending, especially from their players in B, but all it got them was a mere two rounds, as the home side kept winning round after round to go into the break up 10-5.

In the second half, Na´Vi came close to winning the pistol round, but two crucial kills from Adam "friberg" Friberg in the rotation turned the tie. Friberg would prove to be just as important in the first gun round, when he got a triple kill. Lacking ideas and the inspiration to break through NiP's defence, Na´Vi failed to win a single round in the Terrorist side as the Swedes picked up a 16-5 victory to take the lead in the game.

Fifflaren: Top fragger on de_inferno

On de_train, NiP, who started out on the CT side, looked like they had the pistol round in the bag after Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson picked up a triple kill in the inner site, but then some great long-range Glock work from the Ukrainians put them in the lead.

After losing the first eco round, NiP surprisingly went for a buy, a move that backfired as Na´Vi kept on winning. Eventually the Swedish side found themselves down by five rounds, and things were not looking good for them. Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund's two shotgun kills then helped NiP to get their first round in the map, with the Swedes going on to reduce the deficit to 4-5.

Na´Vi then went on an eco rush in the alley, a strategy that wreaked havoc in NiP's defence and almost cost the Swedish team the round, if it weren't for Alesund saving the day by winning a 1-on-2 situation.

In order to counter Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács' AWP, NiP bought two auto-snipers and one AWP, but that move did not pay off as they lost the round, despite Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson winning a 1-on-2 with two stunning kills (no time left on the clock to defuse the bomb). The rest of the first half was neck-and-neck, with NiP taking a close 8-7 lead to the second half.

In the pistol round, NiP went for a textbook mid rush which literally gave Na´Vi no chance. With the Ukrainians trailing 7-11, Sergey "starix" Ischuk put his side back in the game with two kills in the alley. Rounds kept going back and forth, until Na´Vi embarked on a four-round winning streak to level the game on 14 rounds.

The 29th round was a dramatic one, with NiP spurning a 4-on-2 situation, leaving Richard "Xizt" Landström up against two opponents. Luckily for them, the team's captain was up to the task as he took Na´Vi's men down to put NiP just inches away from the victory. In the final round, Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg almost won a 1-on-3 situation in the inner site, but the last man alive from Na´Vi managed to defuse the bomb.

In overtime, Na´Vi, who remained in the CT side, got off the brighter and took the lead after winning the first round, but then NiP replied and won four rounds in a row to win the map 19-16, the game and the tournament.

NiP win it all

He flanked Xizt from ladder room, but was overconfident (had an AWP, probably to save next round for GuardiaN, but wiffed the AWP shot on Xizt while Xizt had his back turned). Really dissapointing, cost them the game most likely, as they most likely would have won 16-14 if they took that round.

That's because the community contributed to the prize pool by purchasing Compendiums for DreamLeague. No surprises there. Maybe one day Valve will implement a similar system into CS.

That is for obvious reasons though, a) because the scene has been built around TI b) the player base is around 7 - 8mill unique monthly players c) because viewership is pretty consistent and d) the community puts in quite a bit. Don't underestimate the power of either community. But CSGO is still growing and shows no signs of slowing down, much to what happened to DotA2 with DotA2 being a year older than CSGO.

They haven't stopped producing cases to stop backing tournaments. The feeling is, that money from current eSports cases have been banked and put aside for future tournaments. ;)

Giving the fact they made an eSport case at first and later on the current eSport Winter Case as a season case it should've been outdated by now making room for eSport Fall or Summer case. It seems weird making season cases and then just stop producing. But I guess you can say they've earned a lot already. Just doesn't seem like Valve holding back when it comes to money - especially not when it's community funded.

Would be nice to have more transparency. Especially regarding esports cases/keys, if people are "tricked" to buying them for the sake of esports growing. Would be nice to know where we stand regarding that. Or did they jsut put that money in dota2 tournaments.

As I said, that money is kept in a pot and will be used for future tournaments. I agree more transparency would be nice, but in reality, Valve operate a lot differently from other companies in the world, they have a unique business perspective, and they treat their games as such. The community will be rewarded I imagine.

If only starix hit xizt when coming from ladder, then there is gg on train, but he didnt which is unlucky. Also guardian did not have big impact as he used to, but edward played really well. If NaVi get more consistent then they are really dangerous. I also think that NiP had timing on their side sometimes, but i might be biased:p Anyway cool game on train, and gratz to nip!

NiP always in the finals at every tournament. I don't remember ever being a team so stable, keep being number 1 for over two years now. GG This tournament too, they had such a hard side of the bracket, Titan, HR and Na'Vi in the final. Just too strong

VP was the only top team that NiP didn't beat this tournament. The way NiP are playing right now tell me that they can go for that 87-0 record.

Nah, it is in all their hands. But the one who have always stepped up or played amazing through it all is always GeT_RiGhT now I mean all finals etc, f0rest have been inconsistent except for now maybe. Now it was GeT_RiGhT's turn in the early stages, but he has fever. And even though he still steps it up like a beast when he is not in full shape :)

Na`Vi have always struggled in group stages, especially in the first match. Even back to 2010 when they dominated every major tournament. In ESWC 2010, for example, they barely made it through the group stage with three-way tie with 3 points from 3 matches. But after the group stage they just crushed everyone including fnatic with their star lineup.

The thing is that this Na'Vi team isn't very good. Their strat execution is mediocre. They rely heavily on aim and Guardian. They won against VP but did you see how VP played? It was 3v5, pasha and snax could not hit a chicken that match. Only byali performed to his usual standard.

Great Final! Starix had some impressive clutch rounds and kept NaVi in the game despite his failure at popdog. He even won a 1v1 against Get_Right who proved to be the strongest clutch round player once more by pretty much winning every other 1on1 and 1on2. All in all I haven't seen such a balanced NIP Team in a long while. Friberg gets the important entry frags when it matters and even had some monster rounds he won all by himself. Fifflaren contributed a lot, despite missing a lot of AWP shots. He was a reliable player and really helped his team. f0rest played great as always, although he was very unlucky in the pistolrounds. he wasn't able to put himself in a good position and without him NIP loses most pistols. Xizt amazes me every time by beeing able to frag that well while making the right calls. it's probably due to the high CS IQ of his teammates that do a lot of rotations instinctively, making his life a bit easier. Great tournament by NIP. I hope next time LDLC, CPHW, Dignitas, mouz and Planetkey will attend as well. Because let's be honest: the group stage was pretty boring and predictable (except for a few random upsets - thx Na'Vi)
