? create own organization *

Team Question Mark, who were without an organization for over a month, decided to create an organization called Astralis, supported by a couple of investors, Sunstone Capital and Tommy Ahlers.

Ever since early December 2015, the Danish team were without an organization following their departure from TSM, whom they represented for a year.

Since then rumours have been spreading about their new organization, which included names such as FaZe Clan and Alliance, although it turns out they are going in a different direction entirely.

Question Mark become Astralis

The team, together with their agent Frederik Byskov, decided to build a new organization called Astralis, which has received funding from a couple of investors: Sunstone Capital and Tommy Ahlers.

Main ownership will be in the hands of Jakob Lund Kristensen and Frederik Byskov, with the players and investors holding an unspecified percentage of shares.

All involved set a goal for themselves to create an organization without putting a strain on the players by setting worrying or exhausting terms in the deal, which will also be transparent; the players will be free to discuss all monetary transactions, if they so choose.

"When we first heard about this project, we all thought it was an extraordinary chance to make our own mark in esports. We chose this offer over countless others, including far more profitable in the short term, because we believe in building something that will have a lasting impression on the game we love." Finn "karrigan" Andersen said in a statement on the team's new website.

Astralis boast the following lineup:

Denmark Nicolai "device" Reedtz
Denmark René "cajunb" Borg
Denmark Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth
Denmark Finn "karrigan" Andersen
Denmark Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen

Denmark Danny "zonic" Sørensen (coach)

The team's debut under the new name will be in just a few days, as they will be battling dignitas in group B of DreamHack ZOWIE Open Leipzig on January 22nd.

* UPDATE: HLTV.org has learned that Frederik Byskov and Jakob Lund Kristensen are the main owners, in fact, not Sunstone Capital and Tommy Ahlers.

Millions are being invested into Danish computerstars. Some big cheeses are putting money into these guys as sponsors and investors, and that is pretty much it. Edit: not much is really being told about the sponsors etc. The majority of the article is just about the e-sports scene and the teams history.

thanks for posting this the title of this HLTV post is very misleading (to refer to this as 'player owned'). "The investment fund Sunstone Capital and IT millionaire, Tommy Ahlers, invest millions in new Danish e-sports adventure. Astralis Ltd. will mainly be owned by investors Tommy Ahlers and Sunstone Capital as well as by Frederik Byskov and Jacob Lund Kristensen, who will be responsible for the daily operations of the company."

maybe it is just me but where it says 'player-owned' in the subtitle of this article seems to imply it is owned solely by the players, which is why i said it was misleading

1st of all, i took their winnings of 2015 combined with a monthly salary of tsm (i took 4k$ each) and sticker/signature/streaming money and came to a number around 18k$ each (per month).. They earn that amount through out 2015 each month.. Maybe after taxes around 12k$ a month... Besides this they have ahlers and this other company (rich mofos) as investors.. They wont pay anything themselfs and will get a good salary aswell ;) read first before writing a comment

You get 100% anywhere.. TSM, fnatic, envyus all get 100% sticket/winnings.. Maybe navi doesnt as they still have an old contract? As much as i am aware teams had to give a part of these earnings to the orgs, but it changed and there might be some teams that still have this clause in their contracts but they wont sign a new one without 100% earnings for sure.. Basicly no difference except the teams in a org get a monthly salary no matter how high the prizemoney / stickermoney was.. Therefor you need to have a certain amount of streaming hours and advertise the sponsors.. EDIT: ex tsm is playing as astralis now which is a new org and they are co-owners. Means, they dont have their annoying streaming clauses in contracts cuz they own that shit and make their own rules.. They have investors tho, so they will get a salary paied by the investors

So why would investors invest in a org which will not earn any money (no prizemoney earnings, no stickers, no streams to support sponsors to have bigger value for sponsors which will eventually bring in more money...)?

EDIT: ex tsm is playing as astralis now which is a new org and they are co-owners. Means, they dont have their annoying streaming clauses in contracts cuz they own that shit and make their own rules.. They have investors tho, so they will get a salary paied by the investors That really depends on what the investors expect, what they agreed on and what is written into their contracts. Also you're wrong when you say that everyone gets 100 % of anything, that is simply not true.

Why would they do that, if they wanted they can get their own org, plus.. most of them are past their prime and virtus pro just got a $100m investment they can spend as much as they want on the csgo team and make it worth it for them to stay on the team.

I do know him, but there are players ahead of him. zet0r, Neutron, Fukush, diGitaL, myssE, natu, tihop, BloodR, PlastE, contE, ruuit, naSu, biggs, Tico, Guardian, vfak. You only talk shit because you know him and not all the rest. You might try and understand that a finnish team was once considered the best in the world. Most of these players played when the scene was bigger in terms of teams. No doubt Spikeone was a good player and he could be considered top15, but there are many great finnish players during history and you don't know most of them.

Most of the guys from 1.6 era that quit the competitive gaming in 2005-2008 are still playing cs go. Just under different nicknames and just for fun. It wouldn't be totally impossible to maybe see some of them attending a small event at some point, but I dont think anybody is really looking for a "comeback" of any sort.

This is a very bold move of the danes. I pray that it will turn out good for them and they can reap the rewards of their risk. Obviously it's an weakness to have players involved with the ownership, and looking towards fnatic, how they managed to improve with every player change, i can be worried that this might be an impeding factor. With that said, i can understand their motivation and the unique chance they possessed. I respect their decision, i will be there cheering for you guys like always, and i look forward to an hopefully successful 2016 in the name of Astralis! Good luck guys!

If the news article from tv2 is correct, then they are indeed owners. You might argue they are not majority stake holders, but it clearly states they are involved with the ownership. "Derudover har de fem spillere på holdet også anparter."

You just make it seem like it's only them, calling them the only owners, you know how much there is behind the scene, with website, sponsors etc, that's why players can never be the real owners that's why Tommy and Frederik got anparters in the team. would just call EX-TSM shareholders, not owners.

First of all he never 'made it seem like it's only them...' as you stated earlier. He is clearly referring to the article which says the players are INVOLVED IN THE OWNERSHIP Also, in English, it is completely acceptable for him to say 'you have no idea what you are talking about', in fact hearing this is much more common in conversational English than saying "you clearly have no knowledge of what you are talking about" so actually you're wrong all the way around, nt tho

No you started the whole argument by stating that BATISTUTA's post makes it seem like the team are the only owners which it clearly does not. Then you try to make a shitty comeback riding on a success of your granddad, like the knowledge is genetic somehow lmao.

Riding on my granddad's succes have nothing to do with it, our family talks about shareholds almost everyday we love to buy shareholds from different companies, it have nothing to do with genetic just how my granddad affect me and the males of our family, so please gtfo with that, twisting my tongue and shit, making me sound like steel and i meant they're not involved with the any kinds of ownership what so ever they're just shareholders, depends if they use at least 5% more of their time managing the org, which i've a hard time imagining, no reason to be a brain cancer.

The article is correct. Frederik Byskov read it for fact-check before it was published. You are right and csgo_dev_Benson is wrong in the interpretation of the words I wrote in the article at tv2.dk.

that is true. one good thing about the players owning part of the organization is that even if a player change was needed, it is still in everyone's interest to have the team perform at its best. as its success benefits the owners.

Obviously it's an weakness to have players involved with the ownership. Depends on how the roles are defined and I am sure that the players themselves won't be too involved and can focus more on their part of it - playing. People tend to work harder for something they are a part of and can see a more long term benefit from compared to the other way around.

yea, I think so too, no one wants major chockers with $5k salary per player every month with 100% of sticker money and 100% of winning money. Get star-twisted a lot. I remember days when they was dignitas. And they not improved their game a lot actually. Still shitgnitas.

I just don't like star-twisted shitty players, who think tey are tier 1, but they never will be. Even young LG have much more potential than they. They are not choking, they just can't. They showing their maximum and sucking. They not deserved what they got and it's unfair. I'm working 40 hours per week, 5 days, and earning 4k/month, why I should be jelly about guys who is playing and learning cs like 16 hours per day and have nothing to do out of it in their life? It's sad. Nothing to be jelly about it.

How the fuck is a team that placed themselfs in 17 out of 21 offline tournaments in top 4 not worth getting payed fulltime? They won 5 tournaments (with all the topteams attending) placed 5 times 2nd and 7times 3rd-4th only 4 times below #4... With your logic no team besides fnatic deserves a full support... You are just dumb as fuck... Im 100% sure they got very very very good offers from tons of top orgs and thats because they are a top 5 team in the world and they could win any tournament at anytime, they just need to pass that semifinal of a major once and they will probably win the major and the chokes will be gone... You are just low minded and should realy stop writing in topics like this one

these kids nowadays don't realize that top teams are all high skilled. for some reason they consider only top 1-3 worth something and fail to realize only one team can win a tournament. all the rest of the top teams place somewhere below that. finishing top 4 is a big deal.

If they want to kick somebody it's gonna a long and complicated process, but not impossible. I think they will pay the kicked player a some sort of "severance pay" + the amount that he owns from the company. Now the player just needs to accept that. And I think anybody would prefer this option instead of share issues that are very uncertain. But yeah I haven't seen the contract so it's pretty pointless to even think about this.

yeah, I guess that will be the option. And it's easy to go for it as they haven't reached anything profit or businesswise. anyway it will be running in the frames of standard coporate law. But taking to account how the relationships in teams get spoiled from time to time, the conflicts will be there and that's going to be tough.

Hm i guess it's just that even though they got the rights to the name etc, astralis housed some of finlands finest players, and the name is associated with finland. And now it will be associated with Denmark. So i guess some finns will be mad about this. I mean imagine if NiP went bankrupt and the players decided to make their own org, and then call it eoLithic for example..

players make too much money nowadays, starting their own organization... gonna be funny to see what happens when someone gets kicked from the team but still has a stake in the org...

yea yea but they could potentially not sell their stake, and then go play for another team and be making money from both.

Players as co-owners cause they have stakes in the organisation. Might be dangerous when they go bankrupt since players are tied to it. Anyway, I hope it works out for them. I love how they want to keep everything transparant, however i doubt it's gonna be full 100% transparancy. /edit: I remember having Astralis back in 1.6 as a team/organisation. How did they get the name? Or was this free?

They have talked with the old team and now they have the rights to use the name. If they have payed a small fee or not, is afaik not known 😊

The abbreviation ApS is short for private limited company, which means that if they were to go bankrupt, they won't come out of it with debt.

They are screwed. I don't want to be rude but it seems Kerrigan opened a T-shirt store, sold 5 of those and now thinks he can run eSports org. Seriously, just look how many small, self funded orgs are dying - Titan for example. There is also other story of their recent results. I'm sure they will get sponsors but man, Cajun just recently got Tesla. It costs a lot to maintain such a car. On the other hand, even if it fails they'll get a lot of business experience and that is never a bad thing. Good luck to Danish boys but owning the org I don't see them winning a major. Imagine going to major with sponsor contract expiring and no next sponsor lined up. That's so much added pressure that gamers typically don't handle whatsoever.

Yes, so? Far bigger organizations (out of eSports) has been backed by far bigger people and still failed (and didn't pay salaries). Nobody will use money from their pocket if things start to go bad.

Because players are part of the business process, and those players aren't very mature themselves, are known for chokes already etc. Again, imagine the org is having a problem and all of it has to be disclosed to them - players - as they are shareholders while they need to focus on the game as they are leaving for a major. Running a business is stressful enough.
