CS 1.6 update coming soon

New CS 1.6 update with consequences for your demo collection.

As some of you might have noticed Valve has been running a beta for an update version of CS 1.6, what exactly the new features will be we are not yet aware of, we however do believe it includes more community features, and an attempt to eliminate silent running using duck jump, but the most notable change, and the reason for this heads up is that the protocol of CS will be changed from 47 to 48.

Most of you probably have no idea why this protocol change matters, but it means that ALL old demos will stop working, yes that is right, all 4500 demos in the HLTV.org demosection, all the demos you have saved over the past years, they will not play. So make sure to get those movies made as soon as possible, rumors has it the update will be released sometime this week.

We have been trying to find a way to make old demos work in the new version, but until now we have not been able to get anywhere. We will keep at it, but it is doubtful they will ever work in the new version.

The good news are that we have been working closely with Valve to make sure HLTV smoothly made the transition to the new version, and from our last tests HLTV should work just as before when the new update goes live.

Why is Valve working together with company's or websites ?. They have to ask the user/cs player what they want... after that, they can start changing things.

What do you mean? I sent them a few bug reports, and they got fixed so HLTV would work in the new update, I don't see anything wrong with that..

I presume he meant to say that when working with companies or websites these will focus to make work what they are interested in, f.e. HLTV in case of HLTV.org, but maybe not taking into account or stressing to be fixed "general player aspects" ;)

i love it how they come back 5 years later and roll in with an update that will not only be hated by the majority but will also make cs much slower and more boring. sleeping in seattle(?), obviously not wide awake at least.

It's so stupid to make updates without listening the community needs... There are so much improvements to do before removing the silentduck trick. - flash bugs fix + prevent players to see under boxes/walls - update VAC - fix silent bomb - fix silencer + switch bug - make 16bits smokes same as 32bits - fix alt tab cl_righthand changing - fix HLTV to sometimes not being able to show the Picture-In-Picture (due to sv_restart command) - and there are a lot of other more important improvement than remove silentrun. And instead of removing silentrun, they should add a command like sv_silentrun 0/1 to allow it or not.

- flash bugs fix + prevent players to see under boxes/walls These are map bugs - make 16bits smokes same as 32bits If you understood what the actual 16bit and 32bit stood for, You wouldn't make this comment. Instead you should be saying "Remove 16bit" - fix HLTV to sometimes not being able to show the Picture-In-Picture (due to sv_restart command) This may be a HLTV issue, not a CS issue? - And instead of removing silentrun, they should add a command like sv_silentrun 0/1 to allow it or not. It's already done.. it's called cl_footsteps

That's not the silent run we are talking about.. This silent run concerns duck " hopping " so you get an unregular sound of footsteps, like an enemy on distance.

So.. after the big update release there will not be anymore the normal 1.6 in our Games list? It's ok to fix silent running but I saw something about: when you play, on your score display it will show your community nickname and your picture. I hope that will not be realised because I don't want to enter to their community site from the "In game" option and change the nick from there, this will take me 8689423+ years. I want to change the name from console... :| I think there's no rush for people who make CS 1.6 (the version that is used at the moment) movies because they can play them with 1.6 nonsteam. :)

Your absolutely right. They will install the friends/community nickname and picture in to the score display, just as in Team Fortress 2. Myself I think its bullshit, but remember VALVe is a big company, and money is very important. Making people use the community, other companies will pay big 'buffs' to advertise, just as in the Steam loading screen before entering a server. You said it lurppis, they have been sleeping in Seattle...

so, changing the protocol will cause death of every 1.6 server in the world. i just cant believe that. what i do believe is major lost of people playing counter-strike. it is what it's like to update a game after several years of doing nothing with it. its gonna be a huge failure, that's how i see it.

they already did remove it.. there is the beta, I played it.. you still can do the silent-run, but only in terms of the movement.. the sounds will be even more fucked up because they tried to put in some footsteps.. but it's not silent anymore :/ I really think that that update will make the bigger part of the community be angry... it isn't a but to use silentrun, it is a feature.. gg

IT DOESN'T fuck up the hitboxes, and it never did ;) it's just the one that shots at the silent-runner, that thinks that they are fucked up if he doesn't hit anything! the fact that you hit a silent-runner, where he actually isn't, is due to the ex_interp 0.1 relay ;) nothing to do with silentrun

because 30% of the community (mainly noobs and cheater who gof fU**ed by silentrun) flamed them... vavle doesn't seem to care about the actual scene, the pro-teams, and so on..

MESSAGE TO STEAM: this update will fail thanks ...seriously though, the only reason people stayed with 1.6 instead of moving to source was because 1.6 was ORIGINAL. No need for change in my opinion.

"and an attempt to eliminate silent running using duck jump" - Great... Just taking away a characteristic of 1.6. As a mate put it on vent "Just turning it into source with shitter graphics".

So Valve finally update 1.6 out of the blue, getting rid of features that define the game, and yet they're still allowed to stick ads on maps which is against the ToS. Somebody just DDoS steampowered.com plz

i think the silent run is gonna stay, cuz many companies and proclans do like this feature. so think positive, search for solutions and take constructive actions.

Relax. The only thing stopping demos from working with the Beta right now is the different game folder name - "cstrike_beta" rather than "cstrike". There's no reason the game folder won't be changed to "cstrike" once the game comes out of Beta. As for the network protocol: the number has been changed from 47 to 48, but the underlying protocol itself hasn't changed enough to be incompatible. Mismatched protocol numbers just give a warning in the console, it won't stop the demo from playing.

Okay, seems Valve did mess with it since the beta, it is very easy to port old HLTV demos to work with viewdemo on the new version, good work by Valve! :)

This is just bullshit, valve go ruin source, since you have started it already. Listen to the community instead, and stop thinking about yourselves all the time. Who wants to see other people's avatars on the scoreboard? Do as #9 said. You're just gonna lose players this way.

Still 1 problem... that silentrun ... i tryed and saw that i can do it with scrool wtf :S ? remove scrool and leave CTRL .... if they remove CTRL that will be BIG MISTAKE!!!

You will still be able to do silentrun but now it will, or at least it is supposed, not "hide" the sound of running as previously ;)

I couldn't agree more with sap. 16 bit mode should be totally removed! Silent run must be fixed as it ruins the game. I support sap 100% with the comments about preventing players to see under boxes and fixing silencers and flash bugs. Maybe if we just keep quoting that comment, Valve would consider it.
