DH Open 2017 circuit announced

DreamHack announced that they will be continuing with the DreamHack Open pro-am circuit in 2017, revealing dates and locations for 9 events that will take place over the course of the next year.

The organizers emphasize that the Open circuit will continue for the sixth consecutive year, with nine different DreamHack festivals taking place in six countries and on two continents.

Each tournament will feature a similar structure to the ones we saw in the Open tournaments in 2016 and will feature a $100,000 prize pool per stop - adding to a total of $900,000 to be awarded over the course of the year.

DreamHack Open tournaments will take place in six countries in 2017

With the Open tournaments, DreamHack will focus on the amateur scene and will continue with the six invites - two qualified team format, but will add wildcard slots for teams hailing from regions not covered by the qualifiers in some cases.

Marc "Nix0n" Winther, the project manager of DreamHack Open, confirmed that CS:GO will be a part of all DreamHack events in 2017:

“With the constant growth and being the most sought for esports title at our festival events, it is natural for us to have DreamHack Open with CS:GO as a household part of all festival events in 2017,”

"It is important to us, that DreamHack Open stays open, allowing for up and coming teams to have a chance to qualify and a playground to evolve. At the same time we will continue to invite teams directly based on merits.”

The following events have been announced for 2017:

ESL and Dreamhack are owned by the same company. ESL concentrates on best teams and bigger prize pools and famous locations. DH concentrates on more diversified locations, lesser known teams, mostly to promote the game and to give smaller teams a chance.

Partly incorrect on the last part. We have different products that caters differently. Our festival events, which is a combination of many things and not just DreamHack Open, is indeed set as a playground for up and coming teams to evolve. The world's best teams are free to attend, if they chose to so via the invite. We do like to go with different locations and thats a DreamHack trademark. We also have DreamHack Masters, which is our highest tier when it comes to esports tournaments. We currently run it with CS:GO and this year produced the most watched CS:GO event in Malmö, if you exclude the Majors.

I like how DH is,at the moment I dont have a problem with the prize pools. I like that DH holds events at places ESL doesnt venture into, like bucharest, valencia etc. And yes i forgot about DH Masters my bad :)

9 tournaments is a lot, but as an American it is cool that you guys are doing more events in NA. Are you guys considering doing another Masters style tournament as well (along with malmo)? Malmo was my favorite tournament of the year so I would love to see more like it.

It is weird that Poland only ever has Katowice, considering how many events other big CS countries (Sweden and France in particular) have, and that other countries like the UK and Germany have a few as well.

less events, more money would be better. however I like the idea of announcing the events long before they happen, maybe Valve could take note and do the same thing with majors in the future more regularly.

I don't really agree as Dreamhack has always been a lot more than just professional gaming. I think it's nice that they keep on expanding.

Fair point, but with 3 bigger events for example with triple or even quadruple the prize pool compared to 9 smaller ones would imo bring more exposure to the tournaments because the greater the size of the tournament, the higher stakes and probably the bigger the teams that will be there meaning a bigger crowd as well. It could be more interesting as you'd have a few higher tier teams and a few lower tier teams spicing up the competition. Also, don't forget that the DH Open events aren't the only events they have during the year. They also have DH Masters tournaments with bigger prize pools and bigger teams, so if there are 2 or 3 masters tournaments with 250k prize pools then obviously they'll get more viewers than the 100k smaller tournaments which is unfair for the smaller tournaments in a sense because newer viewers will automatically see the 100k event as less prestigious than the 250k tournaments for example. Don't forget that having 9 of these smaller events adds to the oversaturation of professional CS:GO competition which makes it incredibly boring to watch from a viewer's perspective.

I agree for the most part, but the thing is that they probably aren't looking to create massive spectator figures. Professional gaming as a whole is just another ingredient among the rest at their events. MTG is possibly just trying to harvest the best qualities of DH and ESL as organizers, with DH being more nerd festival oriented and ESL being more tournament oriented. That's at least what I'd do in their situation.

Since they kicked Robert Ohlen (creator of Dramhack) i hate them. Creating a great event and then getting kicked out by traitors who overtaken the company is very sad. I hope they catch some diseases because they deserve it. I wish Robert everything best and i hope he comes back stronger than ever, he's a great person. Dreamhack withour Robert isn't the same, he was the funniest person there right after 2GD.
