IEM Katowice EU open qual. #2 over

With the second open qualifier coming to an end, four teams have advanced to the IEM Katowice closed qualifier, which will have three spots at the $250,000 event on offer.

The first open qualifier took place two weeks ago, with GODSENT and HEROIC claiming their spot in the closed qualifier.

In the second, which was played over the last two days, four closed qualifier spots were on offer. 255 teams fought in the single-elimination, best-of-one bracket for their place in the deciding quarter-finals, played in best-of-three series.

The quarter-finals saw Tricked taking down Copenhagen Flames, who eliminated Kinguin in the round of 32, while BIG beat ALTERNATE aTTaX and Epsilon edged Team123.

gob b's BIG advanced to the closed qualifier

After eXtatus defeated FlipSid3 and Vega Squadron in the deciding series, ESL disqualified the Slovakian-Czech lineup due to 14-year-old David "frozen" Čerňanský, as the age restriction in the rulebook is set at 16 years.

Instead, FlipSid3 faced Vega Squadron at the end of the day, and Andrey "B1ad3" Gorodenskiy's side clinched the last spot following three maps.

With the aforementioned four joining the closed qualifier's team list, it is now the following:

World Natus Vincere  France Envy France G2 Sweden fnatic
Europe MOUZ Sweden GODSENT  Denmark HEROIC  Denmark Tricked
Sweden Epsilon Germany BIG World FlipSid3

The closed qualifier, where the aforementioned 11 teams will battle for three spots at IEM Katowice, will take place from February 4-5.

I just can't believe this sht. F3 had to know that frozen is 14yo before the match and they told that to admin after they got rekt 16-7? Well i liked that team before, but not anymore. Anyway, that rule is only for offline tournament, so basically, thay should be able to pick up stand-in for that offline event. But yeah ESL, DQ that team was a lot easier.

Actually there is a problem in the rule book. The rule about the age restriction (2.9.1) can be understood in two different ways. Either it means players who are <16yo before the first OFFLINE match can not participate in any game... OR players must be over 16yo to participate in the first OFFLINE match. ESL should improve the interpretation of this rule because it can really be understood differently.

Today our team ROG.eXtatus participated in OPEN qualifier to IEM KATOWICE 2017, we managed to beat all our opponets and qualify to CLOSED qualifier which is being held on saturday. Unfortunately after the match versus VEGA admin contacted us and requsted documents(id/passport) from frozen claiming that he can not participate because he is 14 years old. There is a rule in official IEM rulebook (cdn2.esl.tv/fileadmin/user_upload/IEM/IE.. ),2.9.1 that says : All participants of Intel Extreme Masters have to be over 16 years of age before their required arrival at the first offline part of the competition. If in doubt, an admin has to be contacted to confirm eligibility. We can not even take stand in and basically we are disqualified because of this stupid rule. No problem for him getting signature from his parents to participate in this event like he did when he participated in Copenhagen Games when he was only 13 years old. I am sure you know frozen from FPL and that he is more than capable to play against these teams. Indeed, he is 14 years old with having his 15th birthday this year. But WHY is there even such rule? What is going on? Why are young talents not allowed to shine and play against top teams?

Well, this is dissapointing. Due to VP lately, you can read everywhere, that unlike other "sports" e-sport does't have age barriers, does it? He is well known as incredible talent (let the understandably childish behaviour aside) and he already participated in online AND offline tournaments AFAIK. Why can kids participate at ADULT olympic games (famously gymnasts) and kid who plays game AIMED for kids can't pursue his dream? Unless there are laws which restrict this, but it would be usually 18+, so thats most likely not the case. I'm double his age and i still feel sorry that he has to stay aside, as long as his parents are ok with what he's doing. Organizator/captain obv fuck*d up, they should know rules and CHECK before the start of event. Easy solution would be let them play with standin tho.
